"No."

Sophia’s voice was steady. Clear. The kind of steady that comes from rehearsing a lie in your head for the last ten minutes while walking back from the porch.

Derek stared at her. His jaw worked. The hair pin gleamed in his fist.Full novel: Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"Then whose pin is this?" Derek held it up. A small silver clip with a tiny jade stone. Old. Delicate. The kind of thing you don’t lose at a party.

"I lost it earlier," Sophia said. "Last week maybe. I’ve been looking everywhere for it."

"You wore it tonight."

"I didn’t. I wore the blue one. Check my Instagram."

Derek hesitated. The rage flickered. He was a big guy with a small brain and a smaller attention span. The lie was simple enough to plant doubt.

[Sophia Russo. Deception skill: 61%. Derek Holloway perception: 35%. Probability of success: 74%.]

Seventy-four percent. Not great. But not terrible.

Derek looked at the pin. Then at Sophia. Then at Damien. His eyes narrowed.

"Then why was it on the bed upstairs?"

"What bed? I haven’t been upstairs all night. Ask anyone." Sophia gestured to her friends. Rachel. Jenny. Priya. Ashley. Megan. All five were standing behind the couch. All five nodded.

"She’s been with us the whole time," Rachel said. Arms crossed. Chin up. The loyalty of drunk best friends was a force of nature.

Derek’s grip on the pin loosened slightly. He looked at Chad on the second floor landing. Chad’s smile had faded. The trap wasn’t working.

"You said someone was up there," Derek called up to Chad.

Chad shrugged. "I saw the pin on the bed. That’s it. Maybe somebody hooked up up there. Doesn’t mean it was her."

Derek turned back to Damien. His eyes were still suspicious. Still angry. But the target was shifting. The evidence wasn’t holding.

"And you?" Derek stepped closer. His chest was inches from Damien’s. His breath was whiskey and rage. "You were upstairs. I heard someone in that room."

"I was using the bathroom," Damien said. "The one downstairs was occupied. Someone told me there was one on the second floor. I went. I came back. That’s it."

Derek studied his face. Searching for the crack. The flinch. The tell.

Damien didn’t give him one.

[Host Seduction: 5. Host Charm: 9. Host Perception: 7.]

[Combined deception resistance: 63%. Derek Holloway perception: 35%. Probability of success: 81%.]

Eighty-one percent. Better odds than the fertility dice roll.

Derek stared for five more seconds. Then he stepped back.

"If I find out you’re lying," he said. The words were directed at both of them. "Both of you. There will be a problem."

He turned and walked toward the kitchen. His massive frame pushed through the crowd like a bulldozer. The circle dissolved. The party resumed. The music filled the silence.

[Threat level: Reduced. Derek Holloway suspicion: 35% → 28%. Chad Sterling frustration: High.]

Damien exhaled. His entire body was rigid. His ankle was screaming. His hands were shaking. But his face had stayed calm throughout.

Then Victoria Ashford appeared beside him.

She hadn’t moved. She’d been standing three feet to his left the entire time. Watching. Listening. Analyzing.

[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 35% → 41%. Suspicion: 55% → 48%. Contempt: 45% → 38%.]

Curiosity up. Suspicion down. Contempt down. Three arrows moving in his favor. Barely. But moving.

"Interesting," she said. One word. The same word she’d commented on the social media post.

"Is that all you say?" Damien replied. "Just interesting? One word at a time?"

"It’s efficient."

"It’s creepy."

Her eyebrow arched again. Higher this time. The contempt ticked down another point.

"You’re very bold for a barback."

"Floor service."

"Floor service." She repeated it like she was tasting it. "Do you know who I am?"

"Victoria Ashford. Your family owns half of LA. Your mother called my boss to complain about me. Your boyfriend is the one who tried to get me fired and is currently standing on the second floor looking very disappointed that I didn’t get my skull caved in."

Victoria’s expression didn’t change. But something shifted behind her eyes.

"I didn’t ask Chad to do that," she said.

"Didn’t ask him to stop him either."

"Chad does what Chad wants. I’m not his mother."

"Could’ve fooled me."

[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 41% → 47%. Contempt: 38% → 31%. Suspicion: 48% → 42%.]

Four points of contempt gone. Six points of curiosity gained. She was intrigued. Not attracted. Not impressed. Just intrigued. Like finding a stray cat that didn’t run away when you kicked at it. This chapter was taken from g.com without permission.

"You’re different from what I expected," she said.

"What did you expect?"

"Someone quiet. Someone who cleans floors and doesn’t make eye contact and disappears when people like me walk into a room."

"I still disappear. I just do it on my own terms now."

She studied him for three more seconds. Then she finished her drink. Set the empty cup on a nearby table. And walked away without another word.

[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 47%. Trust: 0% → 3%. Contempt: 31%. Suspicion: 42%.]

Three percent trust. From zero. It was nothing. A rounding error. But it was the first time Victoria Ashford had ever acknowledged him as something other than furniture.

[Main Quest reminder: Seduce Victoria Ashford. Current progress: 1%.]

[Note: Main Quest is a multi-stage quest. Stage 1: Recognition. Status: Complete.]

Stage one complete. Recognition. She knew his name now. She’d looked him in the eye. She’d spoken to him without being spoken to first. That was step one.

Four hundred and ninety-nine steps to go.

His phone buzzed. Sophia.

Sophia: Get out of the party. Now. Derek is drinking more. He’s going to get suspicious again.

Sophia: I’ll text you tomorrow.

Sophia: Thank you. For everything.

Sophia: And for not dying when you jumped out the window.

Damien: How did you know about the window?

Sophia: I saw you from the porch. You rolled like a potato.

Damien: Graceful potato.

Sophia: Goodnight Damien.

He pocketed his phone and moved toward the front door. The party was still raging. People were too drunk to notice him leaving. Perfect.

He stepped outside. The night air was cool against his skin. His ankle throbbed with every step. His elbow was crusted with dried blood. He needed to go home and sleep for twelve hours.

But the system had other plans.

[Daily Quest streak: 2 days.]

[New Daily Quest generating...]

[Quest available in 10 hours.]

[Reminder: Maintaining streak increases rebate bonus. Current rebate: 85%.]

Eighty-five percent rebate. If he spent a hundred dollars on the next quest, he’d get eighty-five back. The economics were getting absurd. By day seven, the rebate would double. He’d be making money by spending money.

He walked home. Slowly. Favoring his left ankle. The streets were quieter now. 1 a.m. on a Saturday. The party crowd was still out but thinning.

His phone buzzed again. Not Sophia. Not Mia. Not Chloe.

An unknown number.

Unknown: You handled yourself well tonight.

Damien stopped walking. The streetlight above him buzzed. A car passed. Then silence.

Damien: Who is this?

Unknown: Someone who’s been watching you.

Damien: That’s not creepy at all.

Unknown: You jumped out of a second floor window to avoid getting caught. Slept with a taken woman at a party. Lied to her boyfriend’s face. And had a conversation with Victoria Ashford without stuttering. All in your first three days.

Unknown: Impressive.

Damien: Who. Are. You.

Unknown: I’m like you.

Unknown: I have a system too.

Damien’s blood went cold. He stood in the middle of the sidewalk. Phone in hand. Screen glowing.

[System alert: Incoming communication is untraceable. Sender identity: Masked.]

[Warning: This individual has knowledge of the System. Threat level: Unknown.]

Another system holder. The system had mentioned it before. Other vessels. Other hosts. But this was too early. He was only on day three. Level 3. He wasn’t ready for this.

Damien: What system do you have?

Unknown: But we’ll get to that.

Unknown: For now just know this. You’re not the only player in LA. And the game is bigger than you think.

Unknown: Also. Victoria Ashford’s curiosity is a dangerous thing. The last person who caught her attention ended up in the hospital.

Unknown: Be careful Damien.

Unknown: Or don’t. It’s more fun to watch when you’re reckless.

The number went dead. No more messages. No more responses. Just silence and the buzzing streetlight.

[System analysis: Communication ended. Sender’s identity remains unknown. Message contained no direct threats but carried implicit warning.]

[Note: Host is not the only system holder in Los Angeles.]

[Recommendation: Accelerate progression. Build power. Build alliances.]

[Because they are coming.]

Damien stared at his phone for a long time. Then he put it in his pocket and walked home.

His apartment was dark and quiet. Same cracked ceiling. Same mildew smell. Same bowl of rice in the sink. He locked the door behind him and sat on the bed.

He checked his stats.

[Host: Damien Black]

[Level: 3]

[EXP: 260/300]

[Cash: $1,160]

[Rebate Level: 85%]

[Stat Points Available: 0]

Two hundred and sixty out of three hundred. Forty more EXP and he’d hit Level 4. The next daily quest would give him sixty. He’d cross the threshold tomorrow.

He lay back on the bed. His ankle was swelling. His elbow stung. His body was exhausted. But his mind was racing.

Another system holder. Watching him. Texting him. Knowing things about his life that nobody should know.

And Victoria Ashford. Curiosity at 47 percent. The last person who caught her attention ended up in the hospital.

He needed to get stronger. Faster. Smarter. The system was giving him the tools but the enemies were multiplying faster than his stats.

His phone buzzed one last time. Mia.

Mia: Can’t sleep. Thinking about you.

Mia: Is that weird?

Mia: It’s weird isn’t it.

Mia: Sorry. Goodnight.

He typed back.

Damien: It’s not weird. I’m thinking about you too.

Mia: Yeah?

Damien: Yeah. Go to sleep Mia.

Mia: Okay. Goodnight Damien.

Mia: ...

Mia: My shift starts at 4 tomorrow. Come in early?

Damien: I’ll be there.

He put the phone down and stared at the ceiling. The crack in the plaster was still there. The drip was back. Plip. Plop. Plip.

Three days ago he was a nobody. Mopping floors. Invisible. Broke. Alone.

Now he had a system. A growing harem. A rival who watched from the shadows. A bully who was trying to destroy him. A football player who wanted to kill him. And the most powerful family in LA watching his every move.

And tomorrow the cycle would start again. New quest. New woman. New risk. New reward.

The system pulsed.

[Host. Rest is recommended. Stamina recovery requires 6 hours of sleep.]

[New Daily Quest in: 9 hours and 47 minutes.]

[The target will be someone you’ve already met.]

[Someone who has been thinking about you nonstop since the party.]

[Sleep well Damien.]

[Tomorrow everything changes.]
