Damien slept for six hours.

Not peacefully. His dreams were a mess of blue screens and baseball bats and platinum blonde hair and anonymous text messages from shadows. He woke up at 9 a.m. with a jolt, gasping like he’d been underwater.

His ankle was worse. The swelling had spread from the joint to the top of his foot. Purple and green. Walking was possible but painful. Running was out of the question.Full novel: Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

His elbow was crusted with dried blood. He peeled the scab off in the shower and hissed when the hot water hit the raw skin underneath.

He checked his phone. Three messages.

Mia: Coming in early today?

Sophia: I’m home. Derek passed out on the couch. I don’t think he remembers much from last night. Whiskey is a hell of a drug.

Chloe: You alive? You haven’t texted since yesterday. I’m starting to worry.

He responded to Chloe first.

Damien: Alive. Banged up. Coming over later.

Chloe: Banged up HOW? What happened at the party?

Damien: Long story. Bring ice packs.

Chloe: I’m not a hospital Damien.

Damien: You’re whatever I need you to be.

Chloe: Eat a dick.

Damien: Can’t. Already ate Chinese food.

Chloe: I hate you.

He smiled. Then he responded to Mia.

Damien: Coming in at 3. See you there.

Then Sophia.

Damien: Good. Keep it that way. Don’t mention last night to anyone.

Sophia: I won’t. But Damien. We need to talk. About what happened.

Damien: We will. Just not by text.

Sophia: Okay. Be careful.

He put the phone down and opened the system interface.

[Host: Damien Black]

[Level: 3]

[EXP: 260/300]

[Cash: $1,160]

[Rebate Level: 85%]

[Daily Quest timer: 3 hours and 22 minutes remaining.]

Three hours. The quest would generate in three hours. And the system had said the target would be someone he’d already met. Someone who had been thinking about him nonstop since the party.

He ran through the women he’d met at the party. Sophia was a completed quest. Victoria was a main quest target but her arousal was at 2 percent. Rachel. Jenny. Priya. Megan. Ashley.

Ashley.

The bold brunette who had stared directly at him during Never Have I Ever and said she was thinking about sleeping with someone in the room. Her arousal had jumped from 18 to 34 percent during the game. She’d been the most aggressive flirt in the group.

[System notification: Daily Quest generation in 3 hours and 18 minutes.]

[Host is advised to prepare.]

He needed to prepare. His ankle was compromised. His Confidence Aura was on cooldown for another hour. His Liquid Courage was already used. He still had one Desire Spike left in his inventory.

He checked the Level 3 shop for healing items.

[Level 3 System Shop - Healing Items:]

[Minor Healing Patch (Tier 1) - $30 - Instantly heals sprains, bruises, and minor abrasions. Applied directly to skin. Works in 10 minutes.]

[Stamina Restore (Tier 1) - $25 - Fully restores Host’s stamina. One use per day.]

Thirty dollars to fix his ankle. Twenty-five to restore his energy. Both worth it.

[Purchase: Minor Healing Patch - $30]

[Purchase: Stamina Restore - $25]

[Remaining balance: $1,105]

A small box appeared at his door five minutes later. Inside was a transparent patch that looked like a nicotine sticker. He peeled the backing off and pressed it onto his swollen ankle.

The effect was immediate. A warm tingling sensation spread through the joint. The purple-green color faded. The swelling shrank. Within ten minutes, he could put full weight on it without pain.

[Minor Healing Patch applied. Ankle sprain: Healed. Elbow abrasion: Healed. Host mobility: Fully restored.]

Then he drank the Stamina Restore. A small vial of clear liquid that tasted like blue Gatorade. The fatigue that had been clinging to his bones evaporated. His mind sharpened. His body felt fresh.

[Stamina Restore consumed. Host Stamina: 8 → 8 (Full). Fatigue: Eliminated.]

Good as new. Better than new. He had three hours before the quest generated and his shift at The Vault started at 3 p.m. He needed to eat, visit Chloe, and figure out what to do about the anonymous texter.

He went to the corner store and bought a sandwich and a coffee. $9. Not quest-related. No rebate.

He ate on the walk to Chloe’s apartment. The morning sun was warm. The streets were busy with Sunday traffic. Normal people doing normal things. He envied them.

Chloe opened the door before he knocked. She’d been waiting.

Her eyes went straight to his elbow. The scab was gone thanks to the healing patch but a faint pink mark remained.

"What happened to your arm?"

"Scraped it."

"Doing what?"

"Leaving a party."

"Through what? A meat grinder?"

"Close. A window."

Chloe stared at him. Her glasses slid down her nose. She pushed them back up.

"You jumped out of a window."

"I climbed out of a window. Then I fell. Minimal jumping involved."

"Damien."

"Chloe."

"Get inside. Now."

He went inside. She closed the door. Crossed her arms. Leaned against the wall. Full interrogation mode.

"Talk."

He sat on the couch. She sat on the bean bag. Same positions as yesterday. Same energy. But today Chloe looked more worried than annoyed.

"Someone at the party found out I was with a girl who has a boyfriend," Damien said. "Her boyfriend came looking for me. I left through the window."

"Her boyfriend." Chloe repeated it slowly. "Is this the same girl who invited you to the party?"

"Yes."

"The one with the linebacker boyfriend."

"Yes."

"The one I specifically warned you about."

"In my defense—"

"You don’t have a defense Damien. You have a death wish." She pulled her knees to her chest. "Who was the girl?"

He hesitated. Sophia’s name felt dangerous to say out loud. If it got back to Derek, things would escalate.

"I can’t tell you."

"You can’t tell me." Chloe’s voice went flat. "Your best friend. The person who has been covering for your weird behavior for three days. The person who fed you Chinese food while you lied to her face about growing muscles overnight. You can’t tell me."

"Chloe."

"No. You know what? I’m done." She stood up. "I’ve been patient. I’ve been supportive. I’ve watched you transform into a completely different person in seventy-two hours and I haven’t called the police or a therapist. But this is where I draw the line."

She walked to her room. Picked up a backpack. Started putting things in it.

"What are you doing?" Damien asked.

"Going to the library. Away from you. Away from whatever death spiral you’re caught in." She zipped the bag. "When you’re ready to be honest with me, you know where to find me."

"Chloe. I’m not trying to shut you out. I’m trying to protect you."

"From what?"

"From the same people who are trying to get me fired and expelled. If they find out you’re connected to me, they’ll come after you too."

She turned. Her brown eyes were sharp behind her crooked glasses. Searching. Reading. Analyzing.

"You mean Chad Sterling."

"And others."

"Others." She pulled her wrist free. Not aggressively. Just firmly. "How many enemies do you have Damien? It’s been three days."

"Enough."

She shook her head. Sat back down on the bean bag. Didn’t open her bag. Didn’t leave.

"I’m not going to the library," she said quietly. "But I’m not pretending everything is fine either. You smell like trouble. The kind that follows people home."

"I know."

"And I’m your friend. Which means I’m in trouble whether you tell me or not."

**[System notification: Chloe Vega. Anchor bond: Stable. Emotional state: Concerned. Loyalty: Unchanged.]**

The system confirmed what he already knew. Chloe wasn’t going anywhere. She was angry and scared and confused. But she wasn’t leaving.

"I’ll tell you everything," he said. "Soon. I promise. Just give me a little more time."

"How much time?"

"A week."

"A week." She raised an eyebrow. "Fine. One week. After that I’m hacking your phone and finding out myself."

"Fair."

"And if you show up to my apartment with a black eye or a stab wound, the deal is off."

"Deal."

She unfolded from the bean bag and went to the kitchen. Came back with two Mountain Dews. Handed him one.

"Now tell me about the party. Skip the parts that will give me a panic attack."

He told her. Not everything. But enough. The game of Never Have I Ever. The conversation with Victoria Ashford. The confrontation with Derek. Leaving out the sex. Leaving out the system. Leaving out the anonymous texter.

Chloe listened. Sipped her Mountain Dew. Asked questions. Made comments.

"Victoria Ashford talked to you? Voluntarily?"

"Yeah."

"She never talks to anyone voluntarily. She once ignored a professor for an entire semester because he mispronounced her name on the first day."

"She said ’interesting’ and walked away."

"That’s her version of a conversation. Trust me. I’ve been in her orbit for three years. Victoria Ashford doesn’t waste words."

[System perception: Chloe Vega’s assessment of Victoria Ashford aligns with system data. Victoria Ashford’s social behavior is highly selective. Her acknowledgment of Host is statistically anomalous.]

Anomalous. The system thought Victoria talking to him was weird too. That meant something.

His phone buzzed. 1 p.m. The system pulsed.

[Daily Quest generating...]

[Analyzing social connections...]

[Identifying target with highest sustained thought frequency since party...]

[Target selected.]

[Daily Quest: Ashley Moore has been unable to stop thinking about Host since the party. She has checked Host’s social media 14 times in the last 12 hours. She has asked Sophia Russo about Host 3 times via text. Sophia has not responded.]

[Quest: Meet Ashley Moore and complete the encounter.]

[Reward: +60 EXP, +600, Unlock Skill: Desire Reading Level 2 (Enhanced range and detail)]

[Time limit: 24 hours.]

[Target location: LA Crest University Library. Studying alone. Current arousal: 22%.]

Ashley. The bold brunette from the party. The one who’d openly said she was thinking about sleeping with him. She was in the library right now. Alone. Thinking about him.

[Note: Ashley Moore is Sophia Russo’s best friend. Completing this quest may create interpersonal conflict within the friend group.]

[System reminder: Promiscuity is rewarded. Multiple partners increase EXP gain and rebate bonuses.]

The system was pushing him. Not just toward Ashley. Toward conflict. Toward chaos. The more women he slept with, the more complicated the social web became. And the system thrived on complication.

"Damien?" Chloe was watching him. "You zoned out."

"Sorry. I need to go."

"Where?"

"Library."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. "The library. You. On a Sunday."

"I have studying to do."

"You haven’t studied voluntarily since freshman year."

"People change."

"In three days?"

"In three days."

She shook her head. "You’re impossible."

He stood up. Grabbed his jacket. Stopped at the door.

"Chloe."

"What."

"Thank you. For not leaving."

"Thank me by not dying." She waved her hand dismissively. "Go. Do whatever mysterious thing you need to do. I’ll be here. Worrying."

He left. The walk to campus took twenty minutes. His ankle was fully healed. His stamina was restored. His Confidence Aura was back online.

[Confidence Aura: Available. Duration: 1 hour. Cooldown: 6 hours.]

He activated it. The warmth spread through his chest. The anxiety faded. The clarity returned.

He walked onto campus. Sunday afternoon. Quiet. Most students were hungover or studying. The library was a modern glass building at the center of campus. Four floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows. The kind of architecture that said "we have money" without saying it out loud.

He walked inside. Activated Desire Reading.

Tags appeared above the heads of the women in the lobby.

[Woman, 21, student. Arousal: 2%. Status: Single.]

[Woman, 22, librarian. Arousal: 0%. Status: In a relationship.]

[Woman, 19, student. Arousal: 5%. Status: Single.]

He moved through the first floor. Then the second. Then the third.

On the fourth floor, in a quiet study alcove by the window, he found her.

Ashley Moore.

She was sitting alone at a table. Laptop open. Headphones in. Brunette hair fell past her shoulders. Green eyes focused on her screen. She wore a simple white t-shirt and jeans. No makeup. No effort. Just natural beauty that didn’t need help.

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 22%. Status: Single. Attraction profile: Tall men, dark hair, confidence, humor, guys who don’t try too hard.]

[Note: Target has been thinking about Host for 14 hours straight. Obsessive thought pattern detected.]

Single. No boyfriend. No linebacker waiting in the kitchen. No Chad Sterling setting traps. Just a woman alone in a library who couldn’t stop thinking about him.

This one was clean. Easy. Safe.

And that made him more nervous than the dangerous ones.

He walked toward her table. She hadn’t seen him yet. Her eyes were on her laptop. Her foot tapped silently to whatever music was playing through her headphones.

He sat down across from her.

She looked up. Her eyes widened. Her mouth opened slightly. The tag above her head spiked.

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 22% → 41%. Surprise recognition: Positive.]

She pulled out one headphone.

"Damien?"

"Hey."

"Lucky guess. Fourth floor is usually quiet on Sundays."

"It is." She blinked. Stared at him. Like she was confirming he was real. "I was thinking about you."

"I know."

"That’s a confident response."

"You said it out loud. I just acknowledged it."

She laughed. Short. Surprised. Her cheeks flushed pink.

"Sorry. That was weird. I didn’t mean to just say that." She closed her laptop slightly. "It’s just... after last night. The party. The game. And then Derek going crazy. It was a lot."

"You left early."

"After Derek started yelling? Yeah. I didn’t want to be part of that mess." She paused. "Is Sophia okay?"

"She’s fine."

"Good. She wasn’t answering my texts. I was worried."

Worried about Sophia. But also thinking about him for fourteen hours straight. The two emotions were coexisting in her head. Loyalty to her friend and attraction to a stranger.

"Can I sit?" Damien asked.

"You already sat."

"Can I stay sitting?"

She smiled. "Sure."

He settled into the chair. The library was quiet around them. Just the hum of air conditioning and the distant sound of pages turning. A few other students sat at far tables. None of them looked up.

"So," Ashley said. She leaned back in her chair. "You want to tell me what actually happened at the party? Because the version I got from Rachel was that you fought eight guys simultaneously and jumped through a window."

"Eight is generous. It was more like one guy and a window."

"And the girl Derek was looking for. The one Chad found the hair pin for."

[Ashley Moore. Perception: Higher than average. She is fishing for information.]

"What about her?" Damien asked.

"Was it Sophia?"

Her eyes were direct. Green. Sharp. She wasn’t accusing. She was asking. There was a difference.

"Does it matter?" he replied.

"It matters to me. Sophia is my best friend. If she’s doing something that could get her hurt by Derek, I want to know."

[Ashley Moore. Motivation: Concern for friend. Secondary motivation: Personal attraction to Host.]

She cared about Sophia. But she was also attracted to him. And those two things were pulling her in opposite directions.

" Sophia is safe," he said. "Derek doesn’t know anything. And it’s going to stay that way."

Ashley studied him. Then nodded slowly.

"Okay. I trust you." She leaned forward. "Now answer a different question."

"Shoot."

"Why did you come find me?"

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 41% → 52%. Direct eye contact bonus.]

The question was simple. The answer was complicated. He couldn’t say "a floating system told me you’d been thinking about me for fourteen hours." He needed a human answer.

"Because you were the most honest person at that party," he said. "Everyone else was playing games. You just said what you felt."

She blinked. The flush on her cheeks deepened.

"I was drunk."

"You were honest."

"Those aren’t the same thing."

"Sometimes they are."

She looked away. Tucked her hair behind her ear. A nervous gesture. The tag above her head ticked up another point.

"Damien. I don’t know what you want from me. But I should tell you something."

"What?"

"I’ve never done this. Whatever this is. Meeting a guy at a library on a Sunday after meeting him at a party the night before. I study. I go to class. I hang out with my friends. I’m not the girl who hooks up with strangers."

"Neither am I."

"You literally just met me and Mia and probably others in the same week."

"You know about Mia?"

"The whole school knows about Mia. It’s on social media." She raised an eyebrow. "You’re not subtle."

"I’m working on it."

She laughed again. Louder this time. A student at a far table glanced over. She covered her mouth and lowered her voice.

"Look. I find you attractive. Obviously. I’ve been thinking about you since last night. But I’m not going to be another name on your list."

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 52% → 58%. Setting boundaries: Active.]

She was setting boundaries. Smart. Careful. The kind of woman who needed to be pursued, not pushed.

"I’m not asking you to be," Damien said.

"Then what are you asking?"

"I’m asking if I can buy you coffee. Right now. At the cafe downstairs. No pressure. No expectations. Just two people talking."

She stared at him. Five seconds. Ten.

"One coffee," she said.

"One coffee."

"And you don’t try anything."

"I won’t."

"And if I decide after coffee that I never want to see you again, you respect that."

"Absolutely."

She closed her laptop. Stood up. Straightened her t-shirt.

"Fine. Let’s go."

They walked downstairs together. Side by side. Not touching. Just two students getting coffee on a Sunday afternoon. Innocent. Normal.

But the tag above her head kept climbing.

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 58% → 63%. Proximity bonus. Pheromone effect: Active.]

[Quest progress: 15%.]

They ordered coffee at the library cafe. Damien paid. $11 for two lattes. The system registered it.

[Quest-related spending: $11. Rebate pending at 85%: $9.35.]

Eighty-five percent back. On an $11 coffee date. The rebate was almost full. By tomorrow, the rebate would be 100 percent if he maintained his streak. Every dollar spent would come back.

They sat at a small table by the window. The afternoon sun warmed the glass. Ashley wrapped both hands around her cup. Her green eyes watched him over the rim.

"Tell me something real," she said.

"Like what?"

"Like who you actually are. Not the meme. Not the gossip. Not the guy who fights baseball bats and jumps out of windows. The real you."

[System warning: Host is being asked to reveal personal information. No system guidance available for emotional authenticity.]

No guidance. The system could tell him her arousal level and her attraction profile. But it couldn’t tell him how to be real.

"I’m broke," he said. "I work at a bar. I have $43 in my real bank account. My phone screen was cracked until recently. I eat rice for dinner most nights. I live in a studio in South Central where the elevator doesn’t work and the hallway smells like mildew."

Ashley’s expression softened.

"And three days ago something changed," he continued. "I can’t explain what. But I woke up and I was different. Stronger. Faster. More confident. And for the first time in my life, women started seeing me."

"That’s not an explanation."

"I know. It’s all I’ve got."

She sipped her coffee. Thinking. Processing.

"You’re not what I expected," she said.

"What did you expect?"

"Someone cocky. Someone who plays games. Someone who collects women
