Damien arrived at The Vault at 2:45 p.m.
Fifteen minutes early. First time in eight months. Marcus noticed from behind the bar and raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
The staff entrance was through the back alley. Same rusty door. Same dumpster smell. But everything else felt different. He wasn’t walking in as a barback today. He was floor service. VIP section. Direct contact with the clients.
The uniform was waiting in the staff room. A black button-down with The Vault’s logo embroidered on the chest. Dark slacks. A thin black tie. It fit his enhanced body perfectly.
Mia was already behind the bar. She looked up when he walked in. Her eyes traveled from his face to the uniform to the way he carried himself. Something flickered behind her expression. Pride. Desire. Fear.
"You look good," she said quietly.
"Thanks."
"We need to talk."
"I know."
"Not here. After the shift."
"Okay."
She turned back to the bottles she was arranging. The conversation was over. Short. Clipped. The ease they’d shared yesterday was gone. Replaced by the weight of what they’d done and what it meant.
[Target Mia Chen. Arousal: 34%. Trust: 72%. Emotional state: Anxious.]
Anxious. She was anxious. About them. About work. About Tyler. About the social media storm. And about the fact that her coworker had become someone she couldn’t stop thinking about.
Damien finished changing and walked onto the floor. The Vault on a Sunday evening was slower than Friday or Saturday but still busy. Early dinner crowd. Business types. A few couples in corner booths. The VIP section was empty for now but had reserved signs on three tables.
Marcus pulled him aside near the service station.
"Listen," Marcus said. His voice was low. Professional. "Floor service means you’re the face. You greet. You pour. You anticipate. These people pay a thousand dollars for a bottle of wine. They expect perfection."
"I understand."
"One more thing." Marcus hesitated. "Chad Sterling has a table reserved tonight. Table 7. I’ve already told you to avoid it. But his group is large. They might spill into adjacent tables. If they do, you handle the adjacent tables normally. Don’t engage with Chad’s group. Don’t make eye contact. Don’t give him a reason."
"Got it."
"And Victoria Ashford is coming tonight."
Damien’s pulse spiked. "What?"
"She has a reservation. Table 4. Solo." Marcus checked his clipboard. "First time she’s ever come alone. Usually she’s with Sterling or a group. But tonight it’s just her."
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 2%. Trust: 3%. Curiosity: 47%.]
Solo. No Chad. No friends. Just Victoria Ashford sitting alone at a table in his section. The system hadn’t generated a quest for her yet. She was still a Main Quest target. Stage 1 was complete. Stage 2 hadn’t begun.
But her coming alone felt like something. A signal. Or a trap.
[System note: Victoria Ashford’s solo reservation is statistically anomalous. Probability of coincidence: 12%. Probability of intentional proximity to Host: 34%.]
Thirty-four percent chance she was coming because of him. That was up from zero three days ago.
The first hour of his shift was uneventful. He served two business types who ordered whiskey and talked about real estate. He poured wine for a couple celebrating an anniversary. He brought napkins and water and smiled and nodded and did all the things floor service required.
The Confidence Aura was active. His voice was smooth. His movements were precise. The Voice Modulator kept his tone even and professional. Every interaction was flawless.
[Customer satisfaction rating: 94%. Average floor service rating: 71%. Host is exceeding expectations.]
At 7 p.m., Chad Sterling arrived.
He walked in with four guys. All tall. All wearing expensive shirts unbuttoned one button too many. All smelling like cologne that cost more than Damien’s rent. Chad led them to Table 7. The best seat in the VIP section. Corner booth. View of the entire room.
Chad saw Damien immediately. His eyes widened. Then narrowed.
"Since when do you wear a tie?" Chad called across the VIP section. Loud enough for everyone to hear.
Damien ignored him. Walked to Table 6. An older couple. The woman wanted a menu. He brought it with a smile. Professional. Untouchable.
"Yo. Barback." Chad’s voice again. Louder. "I asked you a question."
A system notification appeared.
[Chad Sterling. Aggression: Low. Social threat: High. Intent: Public humiliation.]
Damien kept his back to Chad. Finished taking the couple’s order. Walked to the service station. Entered the order into the POS system. Calm. Methodical.
"He’s trying to bait you," Mia whispered from behind the bar. She’d been watching. "Don’t react."
"I know."
"He’s drunk already."
"I know."
"Damien."
"I know Mia."
She pressed her lips together and went back to her drinks. Her tag pulsed.
[Mia Chen. Arousal: 34% → 38%. Protective instinct triggered.]
Protective. She was feeling protective of him. The woman he’d slept with two days ago was watching another man bully him and her instinct was to shield him. That was either love or codependency. Neither was healthy.
At 7:30, the door opened. And every head in the room turned.
Victoria Ashford walked in alone.
She wore a deep red dress. Simple. Elegant. The kind of dress that didn’t need accessories because the woman wearing it was the accessory. Her platinum blonde hair was down. Straight. Perfect. Her heels clicked on the marble floor like a metronome.
She didn’t look at anyone. Didn’t acknowledge the stares. Walked straight to Table 4. Sat down. Crossed her legs. Placed her phone face down on the table.
And then she looked at Damien.
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 2%. Trust: 3%. Curiosity: 47% → 53%.]
Curiosity up six points. Just from seeing him in the uniform. In his element. Not mopping. Not kneeling. Standing tall in a button-down with a tie, serving tables with quiet confidence.
He walked to Table 4. Menu in hand. Voice Modulator active.
"Good evening. Welcome to The Vault. Can I start you with something to drink?"
"Sparkling water. No ice. With lime," she said.
"Right away."
He turned to leave. Her voice stopped him.
"Damien."
He stopped. Turned back. She’d used his name. First time. Ever.
"Yes?"
"You’re not a barback anymore."
"No. Floor service."
"I can see that." Her eyes swept over him. The uniform. The tie. The way he stood. "It suits you."
[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 53% → 58%. Contempt: 31% → 24%. Suspicion: 42% → 38%.]
Curiosity up. Contempt down. Suspicion down. Three arrows moving in his favor. Slowly. But moving.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don’t thank me. I’m still deciding whether you’re interesting or just lucky."
"What do you think so far?"
She picked up her phone. Unlocked it. Showed him the screen. It was the anonymous Reddit comment he’d found two days ago. The one from the account with no username.
"I know what you are. Keep watching."
Victoria had seen it. The cryptic comment about him. And she’d saved it. Screenshotted it. She was investigating him.
[Victoria Ashford. Investigation level: Active. She is gathering information on Host.]
[Threat assessment: Victoria Ashford is not hostile. She is curious. Curiosity can be more dangerous than hostility.]
She put the phone away. Her expression returned to neutral. Like the last thirty seconds hadn’t happened.
"That will be all for now," she said. Dismissing him. Like he was staff. Which he was.
He nodded and walked away. His heart was pounding. Victoria Ashford was investigating him. Not romantically. Not socially. Strategically. She was a chess player. And she’d identified him as a piece that had moved unexpectedly.
He brought her sparkling water. Set it down without a word. She didn’t look up from her phone. But her tag ticked.
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 2% → 4%. Curiosity: 58% → 61%.]
Two percent arousal. Up from zero. It was nothing. A rounding error. But it was the first time her arousal had moved since the system started tracking her.
Then Chad noticed.
He’d been watching from Table 7. Watching Victoria sit alone. Watching Damien serve her. Watching the brief exchange. His jaw tightened. His knuckles whitened around his glass.
Chad stood up. Walked to Table 4. Sat down across from Victoria without being invited.
"Babe. What are you doing here alone? I texted you."
"I saw," Victoria said. She didn’t look up from her phone. "I was busy."
"Busy doing what?"
"Reading."
Chad glanced at Damien. Then back at Victoria. "Since when do you come to The Vault without telling me?"
"Since when do I need your permission?"
"I didn’t say that. I just—"
"You just nothing Chad. Sit at your table. Drink with your friends. I’ll call you later."
Chad’s face reddened. He looked around. His boys were watching from Table 7. The business couple at Table 6 was watching. Even the bartender was watching.
Chad leaned forward. "Are you embarrassed to be seen with me?"
Victoria finally looked up. Her blue eyes were glacial. "I’m not embarrassed. I’m independent. There’s a difference."
[Victoria Ashford. Emotional state: Irritated. Irritation directed at: Chad Sterling.]
[Chad Sterling. Emotional state: Insecure. Aggression rising.]
Chad stood up. His chair scraped loudly against the floor. He looked at Damien one more time. Then walked back to Table 7 without another word.
The rest of the shift was tense. Chad drank heavily. His friends tried to keep him calm. Victoria sat alone at Table 4, scrolling her phone, sipping water, ignoring everyone.
At 10 p.m., Victoria stood up. Left a hundred dollar bill on the table for a glass of sparkling water. Walked toward the exit without looking at anyone.
As she passed Damien, she paused. Barely a second. Long enough to speak without anyone else hearing.
"The comment was posted from a VPN routed through three countries. Whoever wrote it knows you. And they want me to know you too."
Then she was gone. The door closed behind her. The red dress disappeared into the Hollywood night.
[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 61% → 67%. Trust: 3% → 6%. Suspicion: 38% → 44%.]
Curiosity up. Trust up. But suspicion up too. She was getting closer to him and closer to the truth simultaneously.
The anonymous texter. They’d posted that comment on purpose. Not to warn Damien. To draw Victoria’s attention. To connect them. To accelerate the game.
But why?
[System alert: Main Quest Stage 2 prerequisite approaching.]
[Victoria Ashford curiosity threshold for Stage 2: 70%. Current: 67%.]
[3% remaining.]
Three percent. He was three curiosity points away from unlocking Stage 2 of the Main Quest. Whatever that was.
The shift ended at midnight. Mia and Damien closed up together. Same routine. Wipe down. Restock. Count the drawer. But the silence between them was heavier than usual.
"Who was the woman at Table 4?" Mia asked.
"Victoria Ashford."
"The Victoria Ashford? The one Chad dates?"
"Yes."
"She was looking at you."
"I was her server."
"That’s not what I mean and you know it."
[Mia Chen. Arousal: 38%. Jealousy: 41%.]
Jealousy. Forty-one percent. The system was tracking jealousy now. Mia had picked up on Victoria’s attention. And it bothered her.
"Mia."
"Don’t. Just don’t." She pulled her jacket tighter. "I know what we are. We slept together. We work together. That’s it. I don’t have a claim on you."
"I didn’t say that."
"But you were going to say something. And whatever it is, save it. I don’t want to hear it tonight." She started walking toward the bus stop. Then stopped. Turned.
"Damien. I’m not stupid. I see what’s happening. Girls are looking at you. Victoria Ashford is looking at you. And I know I was the first one. The practice run. The tutorial."
[Mia Chen. Emotional state: Hurt. Insecurity: High.]
"That’s not what you are," he said.
"Then what am I?"
"You’re Mia."
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one I have right now."
She stared at him. Her dark eyes were wet. Then she turned and walked away. Her ponytail swung behind her. The bus stop swallowed her.
[Mia Chen. Affection: 72% → 64%. Trust: 72% → 68%. Emotional attachment: Decreasing.]
He was losing her. Not because of another man. Because of other women. The system was building his harem and destroying his relationships simultaneously.
His phone buzzed. Ashley.
Ashley: Can’t sleep. Can’t study. Can’t stop thinking about earlier.
Ashley: This is your fault.
Damien: Sorry.
Ashley: No you’re not.
Damien: You’re right. I’m not.
Ashley: ...
Ashley: Are you free tomorrow?
[Daily Quest reminder: Ashley Moore. Quest progress: 32%. Time remaining: 19 hours and 8 minutes.]
Damien: I’m free after 2.
Ashley: There’s a park near campus. Sunset Park. Meet me there at 4?
Ashley: And don’t make it weird.
Damien: I never make things weird.
Ashley: You literally jumped out of a window yesterday.
Damien: Gracefully.
Ashley: Goodnight Damien.
Damien: Goodnight Ashley.
He put his phone away and walked home. The streets were quiet. The stars were hidden behind LA smog. His body was tired but his mind was racing.
Victoria was investigating him. Mia was hurt. Ashley was coming around. Sophia was silent. Chad was drinking. Derek was suspicious. Chloe was worried. And the anonymous texter was pulling strings from the shadows.
Three days. In three days his life had gone from invisible to impossible.
The system pulsed as he reached his apartment door.
[Host. Daily Quest progress: 32%. Time remaining: 19 hours and 2 minutes.]
[Rebate streak: 2 days. Maintaining streak for 5 more days will unlock: Rebate Multiplier x2 for 24 hours.]
[Main Quest Stage 2: Victoria Ashford curiosity threshold approaching. 3% remaining.]
[Warning: Anonymous system holder has increased surveillance activity.]
[Recommendation: Sleep. Recover. Tomorrow will be complicated.]
[Tomorrow is always complicated.]
He opened his door. The rice bowl was still in the sink. The crack in the ceiling was still dripping. His bed was still unmade.
Same apartment. Same life.
But different man. Different game. Different stakes.
He lay down and closed his eyes. Sleep came fast. Dreamless this time. Just darkness and silence and the faint hum of the system ticking in the background.
Counting.
Always counting.
[18 hours and 54 minutes remaining.]
