Damien stared at the floating screen for what felt like an hour but was probably thirty seconds.

His brain kept short-circuiting. Every time he tried to form a rational thought, the glowing blue text just hung there, mocking him. Seduce Mia. Forty-eight hours. Sexual frustration level 87 percent.

"How the fuck would you even know that?" he said to the empty room.Full novel: Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The screen flickered.

[System perception analyzes ambient biological signals including heart rate, pupil dilation, and hormonal markers. Target Mia Chen has not engaged in sexual activity for 7 months. Current frustration level: 87% and rising.]

"Seven months?" Damien blinked. Then despite everything, despite the insanity of a floating screen talking to him in his shitty apartment, he laughed. "Poor girl."

He rubbed his eyes. The screen was still there. He pinched his arm. Hard. The screen didn’t disappear. The pain was real. The rain outside was real. The bowl of plain rice sitting on his counter was real.

And the glowing quest hovering in front of his face was also real.

"Okay." He exhaled slowly. "Okay. Let’s say I’m not losing my mind. Let’s say this is actually happening. What exactly are you?"

[The Lust Rebate System is a progression-based interface designed to reward Host for completing sexual quests. Rewards include EXP, cash, skills, and items.]

[Core mechanic: Rebate System.]

[Any money Host spends toward completing a sexual quest is rebated at the current rebate level.]

[Current rebate level: 50%.]

[Example: Host spends $100 on a hotel room for a quest. System rebates $50. Net cost: $50.]

[Rebate level increases as Host levels up.]

Damien read it twice. The math part of his brain, the part that handled his $14 hourly wage and his $43 bank account, latched onto something.

"So let me get this straight," he said slowly. "You’re telling me that if I spend money to seduce a woman, you give half of it back?"

[Correct.]

"And the woman you want me to start with is my co-worker. The one I see every single shift."

[Correct.]

"And if I say no?"

[Penalty: -2 Charm, -2 Stamina. System shutdown for 24 hours. No quests. No rewards. No shop access.]

Damien frowned. "What’s my charm at right now?"

[Host current stats:]

[Strength: 5]

[Agility: 5]

[Stamina: 6]

[Charm: 8]

[Seduction: 4]

[Perception: 7]

[Endurance: 5]

[Luck: 3]

[EXP: 0/100]

[Cash: $0]

[Rebate Level: 50%]

[Corruption Points: 0]

Charm at 8. He didn’t know what the scale was, but 8 sounded low. Losing 2 points would drop him to 6, and somehow that felt like it would make things worse.

"How much is the average person?" he asked.

[Average human male: Strength 10, Agility 10, Stamina 10, Charm 10, Seduction 5, Perception 5, Endurance 10, Luck 5.]

Below average in almost everything. Of course he was. His body was the result of a diet consisting primarily of rice, instant noodles, and whatever Mia brought him from the bar kitchen on slow nights.

"So I’m basically garbage."

[Host is below average but not hopeless. System progression will correct deficiencies.]

"Thanks for the pep talk."

The screen didn’t respond to sarcasm. Damien ran his hands through his damp hair and stood up from the bed. His reflection caught in the cracked mirror hanging on the closet door.

Skinny. Pale. Dark circles under his eyes. A face that wasn’t ugly but wasn’t turning heads either. Brown hair that needed a cut. Shoulders that sloped downward like they were apologizing for existing.

He looked exactly like what he was. A broke, exhausted, 22-year-old nobody.

And the system wanted this person to seduce Mia Chen in 47 hours.

Mia. Who had a boyfriend. Who was way out of his league. Who thought of him as a coworker and nothing more.

"Even if I wanted to do this," Damien muttered, "I have $43 to my name. How am I supposed to seduce anyone with $43?"

[Host is not required to spend money to complete quests. Spending money increases rebate returns and quest efficiency, but is not mandatory.]

[However, Host’s current Charm stat and Seduction stat make natural seduction difficult. System recommends purchasing items from the System Shop to assist.]

[System Shop is now unlocked.]

A new tab appeared on the screen. Damien focused on it, and a list expanded before his eyes.

[SYSTEM SHOP - LEVEL 1 ITEMS]

[Grooming Kit (Tier 1) - $50 - Instantly upgrades Host’s grooming, hairstyle, and skin condition to above average.]

[Outfit: Casual Date (Tier 1) - $100 - A perfectly fitted outfit chosen by the system to maximize Host’s appeal to the target.]

[Pheromone Cologne (Tier 1) - $200 - When worn, targets within 3 feet feel a subtle increase in arousal toward Host. Lasts 4 hours.]

[Mood Enhancer Drink - $30 - A beverage that lowers a target’s inhibitions and increases suggestibility. Effect lasts 1 hour.]

[Body Enhancement Pill (Tier 1) - $500 - Permanently increases Strength by 2, Stamina by 2, and Endurance by 2. Also adds 2 inches of height and 15 pounds of lean muscle.]

Damien’s eyes widened at the Body Enhancement Pill. Fifteen pounds of muscle and two inches of height. That would take him from skinny nerd to... something else entirely.

But $500. He had $43.

"I can’t afford any of this," he said.

[Host has not yet accepted the daily quest. Upon acceptance, the $500 cash reward will be credited upon completion.]

[However, Host may access the Cash Advance feature.]

[Cash Advance: Host can borrow up to $1000 from the system at 0% interest. Repayment is automatically deducted from future quest rewards.]

[Current Cash Advance available: $1000.]

A loan. The system was offering him a loan. Damien had taken out loans before. Student loans. Credit card debt. The kind of debt that made you want to throw up at 3 a.m. when you thought about it.

But this was different. No interest. Automatic repayment from future rewards. And the rewards were guaranteed as long as he completed the quests.

He paced the apartment. Three steps one way, three steps back. The room was so small that pacing felt like walking in place.

If this was real, and it seemed to be real, then he was standing at a crossroads. Option one: refuse the quest, lose stats, go back to his miserable life. Keep mopping floors. Keep getting bullied by Chad. Keep being invisible to Victoria Ashford and every other woman on the planet.

Option two: accept the quest. Take the cash advance. Buy the pills and the cologne and the clothes. Walk into his next shift looking like a different person. And try to seduce Mia Chen.

The thought made his stomach turn. Not because he didn’t want Mia. God, he wanted Mia. He’d been jerking off to the thought of her for months. The way she stretched to reach the top shelf. The way her ponytail swung when she laughed. The way her vest pulled tight across her chest when she leaned over the bar.

But she had a boyfriend. And she was his friend. And he had no idea what he was doing.

Then again, what did he have to lose?

His dignity? That was already on the floor of The Vault next to Chad’s spilled champagne.

His friendship with Mia? What friendship? They were work buddies. They split tips and told jokes. She’d forget about him in a month if he quit.

His self-respect? He had $43 and a dead phone. Self-respect was a luxury he couldn’t afford.

Damien looked at the screen. The timer read 47:42:13.

"Fuck it," he said.

He reached out and pressed Y on the floating screen.

[Quest accepted.]

[Cash Advance feature unlocked. Would you like to withdraw funds now? Y/N]

He pressed Y again.

[$1000 credited to Host’s system wallet.]

[System Shop is now fully accessible. Host may purchase items at any time.]

[Reminder: Daily Quest must be completed within 47 hours and 42 minutes. Failure will result in stat penalties and 24-hour system shutdown.]

The screen minimized itself into a small icon in the corner of his vision, like a notification badge on a phone. He could still see it faintly, a tiny blue dot hovering at the edge of his sight.

Damien sat down on his bed. His hands were shaking. Not from fear. From something else. Something that felt dangerously close to excitement.

He had $1000 in system money. He had a quest. He had 47 hours.

And he had absolutely no idea how he was going to pull this off.

His dead phone suddenly buzzed on the nightstand.

Damien frowned. The screen was cracked and black. It had been dead for an hour. But it was vibrating. He picked it up. The screen flickered to life, but instead of his usual wallpaper, a new app icon sat in the center of his home screen.

A black icon with a golden L. The letters LR.

He tapped it.

The app opened to a clean interface. White text on black. A bank balance showing $1000. A quest log showing his active daily quest. And a shop button.

Below the balance, a line of text appeared.

[Host’s phone has been system-integrated. Battery life: Infinite. Data: Unlimited. Network: All carriers.]

"Infinite battery," Damien whispered. "Now I know this is bullshit."

But he opened his text messages anyway. Chloe was waiting.

He typed quickly.

Damien: Still alive. Coming over. Bring the pizza.

Chloe: It’s 2am.

Damien: Since when does that matter?

Chloe: Fair. Door’s open. Don’t wake my roommate.

He put on the least wet clothes he could find and headed for the door. As he reached for the handle, the system dot in his vision pulsed.

A new notification appeared.

[Hidden Quest Discovered!]

[Target: Chloe Vega. Relationship: Best Friend.]

[Status: Anchor. Quest generation disabled.]

[Note: This target is essential to Host’s emotional stability. Romantic engagement is not required. Protect this bond.]

Damien read it twice. Quest generation disabled. The system wasn’t going to make him seduce Chloe. She was off-limits. Labeled as an anchor.

Something about that made him feel relieved and confused at the same time. The system cared about his emotional stability? Since when did a floating screen give a damn about feelings?

He shook it off and opened the door. The hallway was dark and smelled like mildew. His feet were still damp in his sneakers.

As he walked toward the stairs, his phone buzzed again. Not Chloe. Not the system.

An unknown number.

He opened the message.

Unknown: Hey. This is Mia from work. Got your number from the schedule. Just wanted to check if you’re okay. You seemed off tonight. Also my boyfriend just dumped me over text so I’m going to need someone to talk to tomorrow. You free?

Damien stopped walking. He stared at the message. Then he looked at the system notification still floating in his vision.

Mia’s sexual frustration level: 87% and rising.

Boyfriend just dumped her.

The timer ticked down.
