Damien read Mia’s text four times on the walk to Chloe’s apartment.
Her boyfriend dumped her over text. At 2 a.m. While she was probably sitting alone in her apartment drinking wine and wondering what was wrong with her. And she reached out to him. Not to Chad. Not to any of the rich guys who hit on her every night at The Vault. To him. The barback.
The system pulsed in his vision.
[Target Mia Chen’s emotional vulnerability has increased. Seduction difficulty has decreased from Hard to Moderate.]
[System reminder: Quest timer is active. 47 hours and 34 minutes remaining.]
"Helpful," Damien muttered. "Really helpful."
He pocketed his phone and kept walking. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but South Central at 2 a.m. was still South Central at 2 a.m. Sirens wailed somewhere in the distance. A group of guys stood on the corner smoking and talking loud. Damien crossed the street and kept his head down.
Chloe’s apartment was six blocks from his place. Slightly better building. Actually working elevator. She shared a two-bedroom with a nursing student named Amber who slept like the dead.
He climbed the stairs instead of risking the elevator. Third door on the left. He knocked twice.
The door swung open, and Chloe Vega stood there in an oversized gaming hoodie and shorts. Her dark hair was piled on top of her head in a messy bun. Glasses sat crooked on her nose. A slice of pizza was already in her hand.
"You look like shit," she said.
"Thanks. You look like you haven’t moved from that couch in six hours."
"Seven actually." She stepped aside and let him in. "There’s pizza on the counter. Red Dead is loaded. You want to talk about it or you want to shoot fictional cowboys?"
"Shoot cowboys first. Talk later."
Chloe nodded like that was the correct answer. She led him to the living room where the TV was paused on Red Dead Redemption 2. Two controllers sat on the couch. A box of pepperoni pizza from Domino’s sat open on the coffee table next to two cans of Mountain Dew.
This was their routine. Bad night plus pizza plus video games equals temporary peace. They’d been doing it since freshman year when Damien had helped Chloe fix her laptop after a virus wiped her midterm paper. She’d bought him pizza as a thank you. He’d stayed until 4 a.m. helping her retype the whole thing from memory.
That was Chloe. Loyal to a fault. Sharp as a knife. And completely off-limits according to the glowing system that had taken residence in his brain.
They sat down and picked up their controllers. The game loaded, and for thirty minutes, Damien actually forgot about the system. He forgot about Chad. He forgot about Victoria Ashford’s empty blue eyes. He just existed in the world of outlaws and horses and gunfights.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at it. Another text from Mia.
Mia: Sorry for the weird text earlier. I’m just drunk and sad. Ignore me lol.
Damien stared at the message. Drunk and sad and alone. He typed back.
Damien: You’re not weird. And I’m not ignoring you. You want to grab coffee tomorrow before our shift?
Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.
Mia: Coffee sounds nice. There’s a place on Melrose. 2pm?
Damien: I’ll be there.
He put the phone down and picked his controller back up. Chloe was watching him from the corner of her eye.
"Who’s texting you at 2:30 in the morning?" she asked.
"Work stuff."
"Work stuff." Chloe repeated it slowly. "At 2:30 a.m. On your night off."
"Mia. From the bar. She’s going through some stuff."
Chloe paused the game. She turned and looked at him directly. Her brown eyes behind those crooked glasses were sharp and searching.
"Mia. The hot bartender Mia. The one you’ve been secretly staring at for eight months Mia."
"I don’t stare at her."
"Damien. You stare at her. She notices. Everyone notices. The only person who doesn’t notice is you pretending you don’t notice."
He opened his mouth to argue but nothing came out. Because she was right. He did stare. And he was terrible at hiding it.
"She just got dumped," he said. "I’m being a friend."
Chloe raised an eyebrow. "A friend. You. Being a friend. To a hot woman. Who just got dumped. At 2 a.m."
"Yes."
"You’re going to fuck her."
"I’m not going to fuck her."
"You’re going to try."
"I’m not going to try."
Chloe stared at him for three more seconds, then unpaused the game. "You’re a terrible liar. You know that right?"
"I’ve been told."
They played for another hour. Damien’s mind kept drifting. He had $1000 in system money burning a hole in his pocket. He had a coffee date with Mia in twelve hours. And he had a body that currently had a Charm stat of 8, which according to the system was below average.
He needed the Body Enhancement Pill. He needed the grooming kit. He needed the cologne. But if he bought all of that, he’d be left with almost nothing for the actual date.
The system icon pulsed. He focused on it while Chloe was in the bathroom, and the shop interface expanded.
[SYSTEM SHOP - LEVEL 1]
He scrolled through the items again, doing mental math. The Body Enhancement Pill was $500. The Grooming Kit was $50. The Pheromone Cologne was $200. The Casual Date Outfit was $100. The Mood Enhancer Drink was $30.
Total: $880. That would leave him $120 for the actual coffee date.
But $120 in Los Angeles wasn’t much. Coffee was cheap, but if things went well and they ended up somewhere else, he’d need more.
Unless the rebate kicked in.
He focused on the rebate explanation again.
[Rebate applies to all spending directly related to completing a sexual quest. This includes food, drinks, transportation, hotel rooms, gifts, and clothing purchased for the quest.]
[Rebate is processed within 24 hours of the quest being completed.]
So if he spent $50 on coffee and food with Mia, he’d get $25 back after completing the quest. Not helpful in the moment, but over time, the rebate would compound.
He needed to be strategic. The Body Enhancement Pill was the most expensive item, but it was also the most impactful. Two inches of height and fifteen pounds of muscle would change how Mia saw him. It would change how everyone saw him.
But $500 was half his advance. If the quest failed, he’d be $500 in system debt with no way to repay it.
He stared at the screen for a long time.
Then he made a decision.
[Purchase: Body Enhancement Pill (Tier 1) - $500]
[Purchase: Grooming Kit (Tier 1) - $50]
[Purchase: Pheromone Cologne (Tier 1) - $200]
[Total spent: $750]
[Remaining balance: $250]
[Items will be delivered to Host’s apartment by 8:00 AM.]
[Delivery method: System transport. Items will appear in a plain brown box at Host’s door. No traceable shipping origin.]
Delivered by 8 a.m. His coffee date with Mia was at 2 p.m. That gave him six hours to transform from a skinny nerd into... whatever the pill would make him.
Chloe came back from the bathroom and dropped onto the couch. She picked up her controller and glanced at him.
"You’re being weird," she said.
"I’m always weird."
"No. You’re being a different kind of weird. Your face is doing that thing where you’re thinking too hard and it looks like you’re constipated."
"Thanks."
"Spill. What’s going on?"
Damien looked at her. He wanted to tell her. He wanted to tell her about the system, about the quest, about Mia, about all of it. But the system had labeled her as an anchor. Protect this bond. And something told him that blurting out "a floating screen wants me to seduce my coworker" might damage that bond.
So he went with a half truth.
"I might have a date tomorrow."
Chloe’s controller dropped into her lap. Her mouth fell open.
"A date. You. Damien Black. The man who hasn’t been on a date since sophomore year."
"It’s not a date. It’s coffee."
"With who?"
"Mia."
"Mia." Chloe said the name like she was tasting it. "Hot bartender Mia. The one you swear you don’t stare at."
"It’s just coffee. She got dumped. She needs someone to talk to."
"And you’re just the listening type."
"I can be a good listener."
Chloe burst out laughing. The kind of laugh that made her snort and grab her stomach. "Bro. You once forgot my birthday because you were too busy watching a three hour video essay about Dark Souls lore."
"That was one time."
"It was last month."
Damien threw a pillow at her. She caught it and kept laughing.
"Okay okay," she said, wiping her eyes. "Coffee with Mia. I’ll allow it. But if you mess this up, I’m going to be the one saying I told you so."
"You won’t have to. I’ll say it myself."
He left Chloe’s apartment at 4 a.m. The walk home was cold and quiet. LA at 4 a.m. was a different animal. No traffic. No noise. Just empty streets and streetlights buzzing.
When he got back to his building, he checked his phone. No new messages from Mia. No system notifications. Just the timer in the corner of his vision, ticking down.
[44:02:17]
He set his alarm for 7:30 a.m. and collapsed onto his bed. Sleep came fast but it was restless. Dreams of blue screens and blonde hair and ponytails and numbers counting down.
At 7:28 a.m., his alarm went off. He slapped his phone silence and groaned. His body ached from yesterday. His eyes were crusty. His mouth tasted like Mountain Dew and regret.
Then he heard a knock at his door.
Not a knock. More like a soft thud. Like something had been placed on the floor outside.
He got up, walked to the door in his boxers, and opened it.
A plain brown box sat on his welcome mat. No shipping label. No return address. No postage. Just a box.
Damien picked it up and carried it inside. He set it on the bed and opened it.
Inside were three items.
A small amber glass bottle labeled [Pheromone Cologne - Tier 1]. It smelled like cedar and something else he couldn’t identify. Something warm.
A black leather toiletry bag labeled [Grooming Kit - Tier 1]. Inside were a razor, skincare products, a comb, and a small tube of something labeled [Hair Repair Formula].
And a single white pill sitting in a small plastic case. No label. Just the pill.
A system notification appeared.
[Body Enhancement Pill (Tier 1) - Instructions: Swallow with water. Effects begin within 30 minutes. Process may cause discomfort. Host is advised to remain seated during transformation.]
[Warning: Do not consume more than one pill per 48 hours.]
[Warning: Clothing may no longer fit after transformation.]
Damien stared at the pill. It was small and white and looked completely ordinary. Like an aspirin. Like nothing.
But this little pill was going to add two inches to his height and fifteen pounds of muscle to his frame. It was going to change his body in ways that would take a normal person years of gym work and perfect diet to achieve.
And it was going to do it in thirty minutes.
He went to the kitchen, filled a glass with tap water, and walked back to the bed. He sat down, placed the pill on his tongue, and swallowed.
Then he waited.
For the first five minutes, nothing happened. He sat there feeling stupid, staring at the wall of his shitty apartment, waiting for a magic pill to turn him into a different person.
Then minute six hit.
A wave of heat rolled through his body. It started in his stomach and spread outward. His skin tingled. His bones ached. Not unbearable, but definitely not comfortable. Like growing pains but concentrated into thirty minutes instead of years.
He looked down at his arms. The veins were more visible. His forearms, normally thin and pale, were thickening. Muscle definition appeared where there had been none.
His shoulders broadened. His chest expanded. His abs, previously nonexistent, tightened into faint ridges. His legs stretched, and he felt his spine elongate. Two inches. Just like that.
The pain peaked at minute fifteen, then slowly subsided. By minute twenty-five, it was just a dull warmth. By minute thirty, it was gone entirely.
Damien stood up and walked to the cracked mirror on the closet door.
He didn’t recognize the person staring back at him.
The guy in the mirror was 6’1". Broad shoulders. Lean muscle that filled out his frame perfectly. Jawline sharper. Cheekbones more defined. Eyes brighter. He looked like he’d spent two years in the gym and had a personal stylist.
He was still Damien. Same face. Same brown hair. Same dark eyes. But upgraded. Like someone had taken the original version and polished it until it shined.
[Body Enhancement Pill (Tier 1) consumed.]
[Strength: 5 → 7]
[Stamina: 6 → 8]
[Endurance: 5 → 7]
[Host physical condition upgraded from Below Average to Above Average.]
[Note: Charm stat has not been modified by the pill. Grooming Kit and Pheromone Cologne are recommended for maximum effect.]
Damien opened the Grooming Kit next. He spent twenty minutes in the bathroom. The razor adjusted to his skin perfectly. The skincare products absorbed instantly. The Hair Repair Formula fixed his damaged, overgrown hair, leaving it styled in a way that looked effortless but intentional.
When he was done, he looked at himself again. The improvement was staggering. He went from "guy you’d walk past without noticing" to "guy you’d look at twice."
Then he opened the Pheromone Cologne. He dabbed it on his neck and wrists. The scent was subtle. Cedar and warmth. Barely there but impossible to ignore.
A notification appeared.
[Pheromone Release Level 1 is now active through cologne. Women within 3 feet will experience a subtle increase in arousal and trust toward Host. Effect lasts 4 hours.]
[Note: This effect is passive and cannot be detected consciously by targets. They will simply feel more comfortable and attracted to Host without knowing why.]
Damien looked at the clock. 8:15 a.m. His coffee date with Mia was at 2 p.m. Six hours to kill.
He had $250 left in his system wallet. He needed clothes. His current wardrobe consisted of cheap t-shirts and jeans that were now too short for his new height. He couldn’t show up to a date looking like he was wearing his little brother’s clothes.
But the Casual Date Outfit from the shop was $100, and he wasn’t sure if regular store purchases counted for the rebate.
[System clarification: Any clothing purchased specifically for a quest qualifies for rebate. Host may shop at any retailer.]
So he could buy clothes anywhere and still get 50% back. That opened things up.
He grabbed his dead phone, then remembered. Infinite battery. He tapped the screen and it came alive. He opened Maps and searched for a thrift store near Melrose. He wasn’t going to blow $100 on a single outfit when $40 at a good thrift store could work just as well.
Two hours later, Damien walked out of a secondhand shop on Fairfax wearing a fitted black button-down, dark jeans that actually fit his new frame, and a brown leather jacket that was slightly worn but gave him an edge. Total spent: $62.
[Quest-related spending detected: $62. Rebate pending: $31. Rebate will be processed upon quest completion.]
He had $188 left. More than enough for coffee and whatever came after.
At 1:45 p.m., he stood outside the coffee shop on Melrose. His heart was pounding. His new body felt strange, like wearing a suit that fit perfectly but was still someone else’s. The cologne sat on his skin, doing its invisible work.
He pushed open the door and scanned the room.
And there she was.
Mia Chen sat at a corner table by the window. She wore a white sundress that he’d never seen before. Her dark hair was down for once, falling past her shoulders in soft waves. No ponytail. No bar uniform. Just Mia.
She looked up from her phone, and her eyes found him.
And for the first time in eight months of working together, Mia Chen looked at Damien Black and actually saw him.
Her eyes widened slightly. Her lips parted. She tilted her head, confused, like she recognized him but couldn’t place why he looked different.
Then she smiled.
"Damien?" she said. "Is that you?"
He walked toward her, and the system pulsed.
[Target Mia Chen. Arousal level: 12%. Increasing.]
[Pheromone effect: Active.]
[Quest timer: 35 hours and 18 minutes remaining.]
"Yeah," he said, pulling out the chair across from her. "It’s me."
Mia was still staring. Her eyes trailed from his face to his shoulders to his arms to his chest. Then she caught herself and looked away, a faint blush creeping up her neck.
"You look..." she started, then stopped. She picked up her coffee cup and took a sip, buying herself time. "You look different."
"New haircut," he said.
"That’s not just a haircut."
"Maybe I’ve been working out."
"For a week?"
He shrugged. Mia laughed softly. The blush deepened.
Then her phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at it, and her expression shifted. The smile vanished. Her jaw tightened. Her eyes went glassy.
Damien saw the change instantly. "Everything okay?"
Mia picked up the phone, turned it face down, and shook her head. "It’s nothing. It’s just..."
She trailed off. Her fingers wrapped around the coffee cup so tightly her knuckles went white.
"It’s my ex," she said quietly. "He just texted to say he wants his stuff back. Two days after dumping me by text. At 2 a.m."
The system pulsed again.
[Target Mia Chen’s emotional vulnerability has increased. Arousal level: 12% → 18%. Trust level: 40% → 55%.]
[Hidden Quest Discovered: Comfort the target. Physical contact recommended.]
[Reward: +20 EXP, +$100]
