His phone buzzed. A text from Mia.

Mia: Marcus moved the meeting to 2pm. Gives you time to rest. Are you sure you’re okay?

Damien: I’m sure. See you at 2.Full novel: Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Then Ashley.

Ashley: Can we meet before your meeting? I need to talk to you about something.

Damien: Sure. Where?

Ashley: The coffee shop on campus. 11am.

Damien: I’ll be there.

Then Sophia.

Sophia: Derek is texting me again. He wants to know how you fight like that. I keep deflecting but he’s not buying it.

Sophia: Also. Can I see you this week? Not at a party. Somewhere quiet. I need to talk.

Damien: Yeah. Let me figure out my schedule.

Sophia: Okay. Be careful Damien. Derek has a short fuse.

Four women. All needing him. All pulling him in different directions. And a fifth waiting at the end of the week. Eleanor Ashford. The matriarch.

He showered. Dressed. Applied the Grooming Kit. Checked himself in the mirror. The bruises were gone. The swelling was gone. He looked fresh. Untouched. Like nothing had happened.

Nobody would believe this man fought four people last night. And that was the point.

At 10:30 a.m., he left his apartment and walked toward campus. The morning air was warm. Students moved in clusters. Normal life. Normal people. None of them knew that one of their classmates had just received an invitation from the most powerful woman in Los Angeles.

His phone buzzed. The unknown number.

Unknown: You received the invitation.

Damien: You know about that?

Unknown: I know about everything Damien.

Unknown: Eleanor Ashford doesn’t invite people to her home. She summons them. This isn’t a lunch. It’s an audition.

Damien: An audition for what?

Unknown: For a role you don’t understand yet.

Unknown: But you will.

Unknown: One piece of advice. When you walk into the Ashford Estate, don’t be impressed. Be yourself. Eleanor can smell fear and she despises it.

Unknown: Also. Victoria will be there.

Victoria. At the luncheon. Mother and daughter in the same room. And Damien in the middle.

Unknown: Thursday will change everything. Prepare accordingly.

Unknown: And Damien.

Unknown: Buy something nice to wear. The Ashfords judge people by their shoes.

The number went dead. As always.

Damien reached the coffee shop at 10:55 a.m. Ashley was already there. Sitting at a corner table. Laptop open. But she wasn’t looking at the screen. She was staring at the door. Waiting for him.

She wore a green sweater and jeans. Her brunette hair was pulled back. No makeup. She looked tired. Worried.

[Ashley Moore. Arousal: 14%. Trust: 84%. Emotional state: Anxious.]

Anxious. Not aroused. Not excited. Anxious. She hadn’t come here for romance. She’d come here for answers.

He sat across from her. She closed the laptop.

"I watched the video seventeen times," she said.

"That’s concerning."

"Seventeen times Damien. I watched you fight four men with weapons. Bare handed. And win. That’s not normal."

"I had a good teacher."

"You don’t take MMA classes. I asked around. You don’t go to any gym. You don’t play any sports. You’ve never been in a fight before this week." She leaned forward. "So how did you do it?"

[Ashley Moore. Perception: High. Pattern recognition: Active. She is building a case.]

She was building a psychological profile. The psychology major was doing what psychology majors do. Analyzing. Categorizing. Finding the pattern.

"A tool that makes you strong enough to fight four men?"

"Yes."

"What tool does that?"

"I can’t tell you."

"Can’t. Won’t. Same wall. Every time." She rubbed her temples. "Damien. I like you. I really like you. What happened yesterday was... I haven’t felt like that in a long time. Maybe ever. But I can’t be with someone I don’t understand. I can’t be with a mystery."

[Ashley Moore. Trust: 84% → 79%. Emotional state: Conflicted.]

Trust dropping again. Every time he said "I can’t explain" she lost a piece of faith in him.

"Ashley. What if I told you that the answer is impossible. That if I told you, you wouldn’t believe me. That you’d think I was crazy."

"I study human behavior Damien. I’ve heard things that would sound crazy to anyone. Try me."

[System warning: Host is approaching disclosure threshold. The system does not permit direct disclosure to non-host individuals.]

[Penalty for disclosure: System shutdown. Permanent.]

Permanent shutdown. He couldn’t tell her. The system wouldn’t let him. If he told Ashley the truth, he’d lose everything. The skills. The money. the body. All of it.

"I can’t," he said.

"Then I can’t do this." She stood up. Picked up her laptop. Looked at him with those green eyes that saw too much. "I’m not breaking up with you Damien. Because we were never really together. But I need space. I need time to figure out if I can be with someone who won’t let me in."

"Ashley."

"Don’t. Just... don’t." She pulled her bag over her shoulder. "When you’re ready to be honest with me. Really honest. You know where to find me."

She walked out. The coffee shop door closed behind her. The bell above it rang softly.

[Ashley Moore. Trust: 79% → 71%. Emotional attachment: Strained. Status: Distanced.]

He’d lost four points of trust in two minutes. The woman he’d slept with yesterday was walking away because he couldn’t tell her the truth.

The system was isolating him. Every relationship that wasn’t quest-related was deteriorating. Chloe was giving him three days. Ashley needed space. Mia was scared. Sophia was suspicious.

The only relationships the system protected were the ones it created. Quest targets. Harem members. Tools for progression.

[System note: Host’s social isolation is a natural byproduct of system progression. Non-quest relationships may deteriorate. This is expected.]

Expected. The system expected him to lose his friends. His real connections. His humanity.

It was designed that way.

His phone buzzed. A reminder. The meeting with Marcus at 2 p.m. Three hours.

He had three hours to kill. Nowhere to go. Nobody to talk to. His best friend was hurt. His lover was distancing herself. His coworker was scared. His quest target was suspicious.

And on Thursday, he was having lunch with the most dangerous family in Los Angeles.

He walked to the campus library. Sat at a table on the fourth floor. The same alcove where he’d found Ashley yesterday. Empty now. Just him and the hum of the air conditioning.

He opened the system interface and started planning.

[Thursday Luncheon Preparation:]

[Location: Ashford Estate. Beverly Hills.]

[Attendees: Eleanor Ashford (host). Victoria Ashford (confirmed). Others unknown.]

[Host objectives: Determine Eleanor’s intentions. Advance Main Quest Stage 2. Maintain composure.]

[Items needed:]

[Outfit: Business Formal (Tier 2) - $200 - System provides enhanced fit and fabric. Automatically projects wealth and taste.]

[Confidence Aura - Available. Cooldown resets at 2 p.m. Wednesday.]

[Liquid Courage - $40 - One use. Duration: 30 minutes.]

[Desire Spike - 1 remaining. Save for emergency.]

[Scan (Tier 1) - $30 - 10 minute room scan. Essential for reading the luncheon attendees.]

He needed to buy the outfit and the Scan. The Confidence Aura would be off cooldown by Thursday. The Liquid Courage was backup.

[Purchase: Outfit Business Formal (Tier 2) - $200]

[Purchase: Scan (Tier 1) - $30]

Three thousand five hundred dollars. Four days ago he had forty-three.

The system was making him rich. But it was also making him alone.

He closed the interface and stared out the window. The campus spread out below him. Students walking. Laughing. Living normal lives. Unaware that the quiet kid from Lit class was sitting four floors above them with a system in his head and an invitation to the most powerful house in LA.

His phone buzzed. Victoria Ashford.

Not a text. An Instagram DM.

He opened it.

Victoria: You’re coming Thursday.

Not a question. A statement.

Damien: How did you know?

Victoria: My mother tells me everything. She doesn’t know she tells me everything. But she does.

Victoria: She’s curious about you. That’s dangerous.

Damien: Why?

Victoria: Because the last person my mother was curious about ended up working for my father. And then he disappeared.

Damien: Disappeared how?

Victoria: The kind of disappeared where nobody asks questions.

Victoria: I’m not threatening you Damien. I’m warning you. My mother is not what she seems. She’s beautiful and soft spoken and elegant. But she’s also an Ashford. And Ashfords consume people.

Victoria: Don’t be consumed.

[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 73%. Trust: 9% → 12%. Suspicion: 41% → 37%.]

Trust up three points. Suspicion down four. She was warning him. Genuinely warning him. Victoria Ashford, the ice queen who had never looked at him, was protecting him.

Or manipulating him.

With the Ashfords, it was impossible to tell the difference.

Damien: Why are you warning me?

Victoria: Because you’re interesting. And interesting things shouldn’t be destroyed.

Victoria: That’s the nicest thing I’ve ever said to anyone. Don’t make it weird.

Damien: Wouldn’t dream of it.

Victoria: Thursday at 1. Wear good shoes. My mother notices shoes.

Victoria: Goodnight Damien.

It was 11 a.m. She said goodnight. Because for Victoria Ashford, conversations ended when she decided they ended. Not when the clock said so.

He put the phone down. The library was silent. The fourth floor was empty. And Damien Black sat alone with an invitation to the most dangerous lunch of his life.

[System notification: Thursday luncheon in 3 days.]

[Main Quest Stage 2: Active.]

[Daily Quest streak: 3 days. Next quest in 4 hours.]

[Anonymous system holder: Surveillance active.]

[Chloe Vega: Anchor bond strained. 3 days remaining on ultimatum.]

[Ashley Moore: Distanced.]

[Mia Chen: Anxious.]

[Sophia Russo: Suspicious.]

[Victoria Ashford: Curious. Wary. Watching.]

[Eleanor Ashford: Unknown. Waiting.]

[Host. You are alone. But you are not weak.]

[Prepare.]

[Thursday changes everything.]
