Damien arrived at The Vault at 1:45 p.m.
The place looked different in daylight without the amber lighting and the music. Damaged. Broken bottles swept into piles. Dented wall. Blood stains on the marble that hadn’t fully come out. The bar stool he’d used as a weapon was bent beyond repair and leaning against the wall like a wounded soldier.
Marcus stood behind the bar. No paperwork today. Just a coffee and a look on his face that said everything and nothing at the same time.
Mia was already there. Sitting at the far end of the bar. Same position as last time. Same red eyes. Same anxious energy. She looked up when Damien walked in but didn’t smile.
"Sit," Marcus said.
Damien sat. Two stools away from Mia. Same distance as last time. The gap between them was becoming a pattern.
Marcus didn’t waste time.
"Insurance is covering the damages. The police report confirms self-defense. Tyler Knox and his associates have been trespassed from the property. If they come back, they’ll be arrested."
Good. Business handled. Now the part that mattered.
"However," Marcus continued. "The Sterling family has escalated their complaints. They’re now pressuring our ownership group to terminate both of you."
Both. Not just him. Mia too. They were coming for her because of him.
[System perception: Marcus Webb is conflicted. He values both employees but fears losing VIP revenue. External pressure is significant.]
"How much pressure?" Damien asked.
"Enough that I had a three-hour meeting with the ownership group this morning. They want me to make a decision by Friday."
Friday. One day after the Ashford luncheon. The timing couldn’t be a coincidence. Someone was coordinating.
"What kind of decision?" Mia asked. Her voice was small.
"Either I keep you both and risk losing the Sterling account and possibly the Ashford account. Or I let one of you go to satisfy them." Marcus looked between them. "And they specifically want Damien gone."
Of course they did. Chad wanted him gone. The Ashfords wanted him contained. And Marcus was caught in the middle holding a broken bar stool and a bad hand.
"What if I quit?" Damien said.
Mia’s head snapped toward him. "No."
"Mia."
"No. You’re not quitting because of me. I won’t let you."
"You’re not letting me do anything. I’m making a choice."
[Mia Chen. Arousal: 38% → 44%. Emotional state: Protective. Affection: 64% → 71%.]
Her affection was climbing again. Because he was willing to sacrifice his job for her. The system tracked that. Filed it. Used it.
"Nobody is quitting," Marcus said firmly. "I didn’t post your bail to have you walk out the door. I posted it because you’re valuable. Both of you."
Damien blinked. "You posted bail."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Marcus took a long sip of coffee. Set it down. Looked at Damien with an expression that was hard to read.
"Because eight months ago you were the most reliable employee I had. You showed up early. You stayed late. You never complained. You mopped floors that nobody else would touch and you did it without asking for recognition." He paused. "And because what happened to you was wrong. You defended my staff. My bar. I’m not going to punish someone for protecting what’s mine."
[Marcus Webb. Loyalty: Moderate. Respect for Host: 62%. External pressure: High.]
Sixty-two percent respect. Up from where it probably was last week. The fight had earned Marcus’s respect. Even if it had also earned him a headache.
"So what do we do?" Mia asked.
"We hold. I stall the ownership group until Friday. And Damien, you stay visible. Stay professional. Don’t give them any more ammunition."
"I can do that."
[Social reputation: Viral. Status: Dangerous.]
"I didn’t start that fight."
"I know. But optics matter. And right now the optics are that my floor service employee is a violence magnet." Marcus rubbed his temples. "Just... keep your head down. Serve drinks. Smile. Don’t punch anyone."
"No punching. Got it."
"And Mia." Marcus turned to her. "The ownership group asked about your involvement with Damien. I told them your personal life is none of their business. But they’re watching. Be careful."
Mia nodded. Her jaw was tight. Her hands gripped her knees under the bar.
The meeting ended. Marcus went back to his office. Mia and Damien walked out together through the back alley.
The sunlight was harsh. The dumpster smelled. Normal.
"I’m not letting you quit for me," Mia said immediately.
"I heard you the first time."
"Then stop acting like a martyr."
"I’m not acting like a martyr. I’m being practical. If they fire me, they keep you. If they fire both of us, we’re both screwed."
"I’d rather be screwed together than safe alone."
[Mia Chen. Arousal: 44% → 51%. Emotional attachment: Strengthening.]
She was falling for him. Harder than before. Because he was willing to walk away to protect her. And that was the cruelest part of the system. It turned genuine moments of sacrifice into stat increases and emotional data points.
"Mia. About yesterday. The text I sent."
"You said you care about me."
"I do."
"But?"
"But there are things happening that I can’t control. And the people involved are dangerous. More dangerous than Tyler. More dangerous than Chad."
"Victoria Ashford."
It wasn’t a question. Mia already knew. She’d seen Victoria at Table 4. She’d seen the way Victoria looked at him. The way she’d leaned in and whispered before leaving.
"Her family invited me to their estate on Thursday," Damien said.
Mia stopped walking. "What?"
"Eleanor Ashford. Her mother. She sent an invitation."
"The Eleanor Ashford? The one who called Marcus to get you fired?"
"Same one."
"And she’s inviting you to her house?"
"Yes."
Mia stared at him. Her dark eyes were wide. Not jealous this time. Scared.
"Damien. The Ashfords don’t invite people to their house. They summon them. My ex worked for a catering company that served one of their events. He said the estate has more security than the White House. Armed guards. Cameras everywhere. And Richard Ashford’s office is on the third floor and nobody is allowed up there. Ever."
"I know."
"You know? Then why are you going?"
"Because I don’t have a choice." This chapter is updated first at g.com.
[Mia Chen. Fear: 34%. Trust: 68%. Protective instinct: Maximum.]
"Everyone keeps saying that. You. Chloe. Sophia. Nobody has a choice. Everyone is being pulled by something they can’t explain." She stepped closer. "What is happening to you Damien? What is really happening?"
The same question. From everyone. Chloe. Ashley. Mia. They all saw the change. They all felt the wrongness. And none of them could be told the truth.
"I can’t explain it. But I need you to trust me."
"I do trust you. That’s the problem." She reached up and touched his face. Her fingers were warm. Trembling slightly. "I trust you and I’m terrified of what you’re becoming."
[Mia Chen. Arousal: 51% → 58%. Trust: 68%. Emotional state: Vulnerable.]
Her hand stayed on his cheek. Her eyes were wet. She leaned forward and kissed him. Soft. Gentle. Not like the first time in her apartment. This kiss was a goodbye that neither of them acknowledged.
She pulled back. Wiped her eyes. Straightened her posture.
"Go to your Ashford lunch. Do whatever you need to do. But when you come back, I need you to be honest with me. All the way. Not half truths. Not ’I can’t explain.’ The real thing."
"Mia."
"I mean it Damien. I’m not Ashley. I’m not going to walk away and give you space. I’m going to stand right here and wait until you tell me the truth. And if the truth is ugly, then it’s ugly. I can handle ugly."
**[Mia Chen. Ultimatum issued. Timeframe: Open-ended. Anchor probability: 18%.]**
Eighteen percent anchor probability. The system was considering Mia as a potential anchor. Like Chloe. A bond so strong it disabled quest generation.
But eighteen percent was low. And the system didn’t seem eager to create another anchor. Anchors limited its control.
"I’ll tell you," he said. "Soon."
"You keep saying that."
"Because I mean it."
She nodded. Turned. Walked toward the bus stop. Her ponytail swung behind her. Same as always. But her shoulders were different. Heavier. Carrying weight they shouldn’t have to carry.

His phone buzzed. The system.

[Target selected.]
He looked around. He was standing in the alley behind The Vault. Alone. No women nearby.
[Daily Quest: Rachel Torres has been trying to find Host since the party. She has asked 4 mutual acquaintances for Host’s phone number. She has visited The Vault twice looking for Host.]
[Target: Rachel Torres. Age 21. Blonde. Round face. The one who organized the Never Have I Ever game.]
[Quest: Meet Rachel Torres and complete the encounter.]
[Reward: +70 EXP, +$700, Unlock Skill: Voice Modulator Level 2]
[Time limit: 24 hours.]
[Target location: Currently at LA Crest University cafeteria. Alone. Eating lunch.]
Rachel. The blonde with the wicked grin from the party. She’d organized the game. She’d been the one who patted the couch cushion next to her and told him to sit. Her arousal had been at 9 percent during the game. The lowest in the group.
But she’d been trying to find him. For two days. That wasn’t 9 percent behavior. That was obsession behavior.
[Rachel Torres. Current arousal: Unknown. Requires proximity scan.]
[Note: Rachel Torres is Sophia Russo’s roommate. Completing this quest may trigger interpersonal conflict.]
