Carter’s POV
I stared at the dark-grey building, its wall held a history of power and dominance.
The Snow mansion has been standing since my great, great, grandfather’s time.
“You have to be strong, Carter.
This is the last line” I encouraged myself as I took a step forward.
“Yeah, keep going,” I urged.
I kept walking slowly, one step at a time till I reached the entrance door.
My hands went to the doorbell and pressed it, there was no sound, nothing at all.
Is it broken or what?
No, that can’t be.
This house is properly maintained.
There is no way it would be broken, let me press it again.
I pressed the doorbell this time very hard, again there was no sound.
“What is going on?” I muttered.
As I stood there wondering what was wrong with the bell when a sharp pain shot to my brain sending shockwaves all over my body.
“Ahh” I groaned holding my stomach, the pain was coming from where I was shot.
I sat down on the stairs and started taking deep breaths, after a while the pain subsided so I got up.
My eyes then caught a shiny object in the plant vase that was on the porch of the house.
I took a step closer to the vase and took out the object from the vase.
It was a small bell.
“What is this doing here and who put it there?” I wondered in my thoughts.
I started examining the bell and that was when I saw a word written at the handle.
“Utere hoc” I read, it was Latin and it means “use this” in English.
Maybe I was supposed to use this instead of ringing the doorbell” I wondered.
Without much Ado, I rang the bell towards the door.
“Coming” someone yelled from inside.
I then immediately kept the bell back at the vase, footsteps approached the door and a click as the door was opened.
His name was Marko, one of my father’s most trusted and loyal men.
“I am not yet the Kingpin, Marko” I replied and entered the house.
My eyes fell on the majestic hallway as a feeling of deja vu came over me.
It was the same as the last time I came here.
“Follow me, Kingpin” Marko said, ignoring what I said about not being the Kingpin yet.
“Where are you taking me to?” I asked as I followed him.
“I am taking you to the former Kingpin,” he replied.
Holding my stomach, I continued following until we stopped at a particular door.
Marko motioned at the door and told me to go in.
“Okay” I took a deep breath, held the door knob and opened the door and looked inside.
There was no one in the room so I turned to ask Marko where my father was.
But as soon as I had turned, Marko pushed me into the room.
The push was so hard and unexpected that I fell on the floor.
Getting up immediately I rushed to the door.
“Fuck !” a curse flew out of my mouth when I saw that the door had been locked from outside.
“What do you think you are doing, Marko?.
Open this door now !” I yelled.
“I am sorry but I can do that, Kingpin.
See you soon” he said and then I heard the sound of his footsteps retreating.
“Fuck this !” I cursed again.
Is this another test or what?, haven’t I proven to them that I am capable of taking over the empire?.
As much as I thought about this, I couldn’t think of the reason why I was in this room instead of where my father is.
I sat down on the floor examining the room, there was nothing in it but on each of the opposite sides which is the left and right.
There were two doors each there which I can pinpoint where they led, bathroom or storage room?.
“At this rate I don’t think that I can make it to the place where the executives are gathered” I said.
Or what if this is my stepmother’s plan to make sure that I didn’t pass the last test?.
That woman is so cunning and evil, who knows if she hasn’t gotten to Marko and struck a deal with him.
“No !” I stood up from the floor and went to the door. Follow the newest chapters on novelping.com.
There was no way that I would stay here and allow her plans to come to pass.
I pulled at the door hard but it wouldn’t budge, I kept pulling until I heard a click.
A door had opened but it wasn’t the door I was pulling, letting go of the door.
I turned around, one of the doors at the right side was open and a guy was standing.
He was dressed in an all black outfit with a ski mask on his face.
His hands were placed behind him and he stepped into the room, the door closed automatically.
“Who are you?” I asked.
Ignoring me, he took out his hands from behind, a baton hung loosely on his right hand.
“Who are you !” I yelled at him.
The guy chuckled and just then the three doors opened and three guys came out dressed like the first guy.
“This is the last process, Kingpin” the first guy began taking a step towards me.
“And what exactly is that process?” I asked even though I obviously knew what they wanted to do to me.
“You have to wind off our attacks the best you can or you will be humiliated when you meet the former Kingpin and probably demoted” he explained, taking another step.
The other three guys were just standing staring at me.
“Then you shouldn’t be calling Kingpin, you don’t if I will make it out of this room” I said.
“We already know that you will” after saying that he charged towards me and I dodged immediately.
“So I didn’t get a fancy baton?” I said.
“Yes Sir, you didn’t” he swung the baton at me and I caught pulling it hard.
He released it immediately so he wouldn’t fall down.
“You always fascinate me Sir,” he said.
“It is time for phase two” he added and all the three of them charged towards me.
As I stood calculating how to attack, the four guys charging towards me seemed to slow in my peripheral vision.
My gaze locked onto a glint of metal peeking out from the hem of one of their pants.
It was a small dark shape, partially hidden inside his pants.
As they edged closer I caught the glimpse of the gun’s edge, maybe the tip of the barrel or the grip but it was enough to send a jolt of adrenaline through my veins.
