Raja quietly excused himself from the gathering, giving Jean and Emma a brief explanation that he needed to step outside for a while.
He didn’t tell them about the frightened voice he’d heard.
There was no point alarming anyone until he knew exactly what was happening, and if the voice really belonged to someone in danger, every second spent standing around explaining himself was another second that person didn’t have.
Once he was far enough away from the crowd, Raja slowed his steps and closed his eyes.
“Concentrate on it,”
Zarathos told him from within his mind.
“Do not listen to the people around you.
Listen only to the one calling for help.
Follow the voice.”
Raja took a slow breath and tried to push everything else out of his thoughts.
The music, the conversations, the clinking of glasses, even the footsteps around him gradually faded into the background.
For a few seconds there was nothing but darkness.
Then he heard it again.
“Please…
help me…”
Raja’s expression tightened.
This time, he didn’t merely hear the voice.
He saw something.
The vision appeared suddenly, almost as though someone had switched on a television inside his mind.
He could see the interior of Stark Tower for only a brief moment before the viewpoint shot outward through the building and into the city.
Streets rushed beneath him, lights and vehicles becoming streaks as whatever connection he had established carried him farther and farther away from Manhattan.
The distance was enormous.
The vision continued moving until the city gradually disappeared behind it, replaced by highways and stretches of countryside.
Raja couldn’t tell exactly how far the location was, but judging by the distance alone, it would take at least forty-five minutes to reach it by road.
Then the vision finally slowed.
A large truck came into view.
It wasn’t an ordinary transport truck either.
The vehicle was heavily reinforced, its exterior covered with thick metal plating and additional protective structures that made it look more like a mobile prison than something designed to transport cargo.
The vision moved through the exterior.
Inside were several children.
Raja’s stomach tightened.
They were sitting in separate seats, each of them restrained heavily.
Their bodies were different from ordinary humans in ways that were impossible to mistake.
Some had unusual skin, others possessed visibly altered limbs or other physical mutations.
Every one of them was secured as though whoever had captured them was terrified of what they might do if given even a little freedom.
Then the vision stopped in front of one particular girl.
She was crying.
Her face was wet with tears, and although Raja couldn’t hear everything around her clearly, the same desperate plea that had reached him seemed to come from her.
“Please…”
The vision abruptly disappeared.
Raja opened his eyes.
For a few seconds he simply stood there, breathing heavily.
He knew where to go.
He didn’t know who those people were, who had taken them, or what they intended to do with them, but he knew one thing with absolute certainty.
They were in trouble.
“That was a child,”
Raja muttered in a low growl.
Zarathos’ voice came quietly through his mind.
“And she called for you.”
Raja opened his eyes fully.
“Then I’m going.”
He turned toward the exit.
Back inside the gathering, Emma Frost was still standing beside Jean, watching the direction Raja had taken.
Her expression had become noticeably more thoughtful.
“Something is strange about him,”
Emma said raising her eye brow.
Jean glanced at her.
“You tried to read his mind.”
Emma gave her an innocent look.
“I was curious.”
“And?”
Emma’s smile disappeared slightly.
“When I touched his mind.
Nothing useful.
Just that horrible cracking sound.”
Jean nodded her head.
“Whatever protects his mind isn’t something you can simply break through.”
Emma looked toward the exit.
That only made her more interested.
“Now I’m curious.”
Jean sighed hearing the words from Emma’s mouth.
“Emma.”
“I’m not saying I’ll do anything.”
“You have that look.
The look you get when you’ve decided you’re going to involve yourself in something that don’t need you…”
Emma smiled.
“Perhaps I’ll just keep an eye on him.”
Jean shook her head.
“Don’t underestimate him.”
Meanwhile, Raja had already found his parents.
He approached Grace quietly while Jagadish was occupied speaking with two guests.
He waited until his mother noticed him and then leaned slightly toward her.
“Mom, I need to step out for a while.”
Grace immediately recognized the seriousness in his voice.
She didn’t ask unnecessary questions.
“Something happened?”
Raja nodded slightly.
“I’ll explain later.
I just need to take care of something.”
Grace looked into his eyes for a moment before giving him a small nod.
“Alright.
Just be careful.”
“I will.”
She caught his arm before he turned away.
“Raj.”
He looked back.
“Don’t do anything reckless.”
“I’ll try.”
Grace gave him the look only a mother could give when she knew her son had just promised something he had absolutely no intention of guaranteeing.
“That’s not very reassuring.”
“I’ll come back.”
She finally released him.
Raja slipped away from the gathering and made his way out of Stark Tower.
Tony noticed.
He was standing near James “Rhodey” Rhodes at the time, casually talking about something that had apparently become far less interesting the moment JARVIS spoke into his ear.
“Sir, Mr.
Raja has left the building.”
Tony paused hearing it.
Rhodey noticed immediately.
“What happened Tony?”
“Nothing.”
Tony took another sip of his drink before quietly speaking into his earpiece.
“Keep an eye on him.”
JARVIS responded without hesitation.
“Understood, sir.”
Tony didn’t explain himself.
He didn’t need to.
JARVIS already understood that Tony wasn’t asking him to interfere unless necessary.
He simply wanted to know where Raja was going and whether anything happened to him.
Outside, Raja stepped onto the pavement and finally realized he’d made a rather stupid mistake.
He didn’t have his Camaro.
He had arrived at Stark Tower with his parents because his own car was unavailable, and he had completely forgotten that little detail while following the voice.
Raja looked down the street.
“Great.”
He considered going back inside and finding his father’s car, but that would waste time, and the people inside that truck didn’t exactly have the luxury of waiting for him to sort out transportation.
He was still trying to decide what to do when the sound of approaching engines caught his attention.
Several motorcycles came racing down the street.
Behind them were police cars, their sirens filling the evening air.
Raja watched the scene for a moment.
A group of masked bikers were fleeing from the police, weaving recklessly through traffic as officers tried to catch them.
One of the motorcycles was coming directly toward him.
Raja took a slow breath.
“Well…”
The lead biker was almost beside him when Raja suddenly moved.
He jumped.
His foot struck the rider squarely, sending the man flying sideways and off the motorcycle.
The bike continued forward for a short distance.
Raja landed directly on the seat.
The motorcycle wobbled beneath him.
He grabbed the handlebars and quickly steadied it.
“Sorry,”
He muttered toward the unconscious rider he’d just kicked away.
The police cars were still approaching, but Raja didn’t wait around to explain himself.
He twisted the throttle.
The engine roared.
And then the familiar heat began spreading through his body.
His fingers tightened around the handlebars as Hellfire crawled over his skin.
His clothes began shifting beneath the flames, his flesh disappearing into supernatural fire as the transformation took hold.
The sound of bones cracking and reshaping beneath the flames was swallowed by the roar of the motorcycle’s engine.
Within moments, Raja was gone.
Ghost Rider now sat astride the stolen motorcycle, his flaming skull illuminating the street as the bike itself began changing beneath him.
Hellfire spread across the frame, flowing along the wheels and engine until the ordinary motorcycle had become something far more sinister.
The police officers approaching the scene suddenly slowed.
One of them stared through the windshield.
“What the hell is that?”
Nobody had an answer.
Ghost Rider looked down the road.
The frightened child’s voice still echoed faintly within his mind.
“Please…”
He twisted the throttle again.
The motorcycle shot forward, leaving a trail of fire behind it as Ghost Rider disappeared into the night, heading toward the distant location where someone had begged him for help.
Ghost Rider didn’t forget about the bikers he’d left behind.
As the motorcycle tore down the road, the remaining riders were still trying to recover from what had just happened.
They had been chasing the same route they always used, confident that the police were the only thing they needed to worry about.
Then a flaming skeleton had appeared out of nowhere, kicked their leader off his motorcycle and stolen the bike right in front of them.
One of the bikers looked ahead at the retreating figure.
“Was that…”
He didn’t finish.
Ghost Rider suddenly turned his flaming skull around.
The orange-red fire burning inside his empty eye sockets seemed to stare directly at them.
The riders slowed instinctively.
For a brief moment, nobody moved.
Ghost Rider simply watched them.
Then his gaze shifted toward the motorcycles.
The Hellfire inside him responded.
A second later, the engines of the remaining motorcycles erupted simultaneously.
The explosions weren’t large enough to kill anyone, but they were more than enough to destroy the bikes and send the riders tumbling across the pavement.
They need to say good bye to their future generation which died today.
Several of them landed hard and groaned, while their leader, who was already unconscious after being thrown off his bike, remained sprawled beside a trash bin.
Ghost Rider didn’t even bother looking back again.
The police vehicles finally caught up.
The officers quickly moved in, placing the surviving bikers under arrest and securing the unconscious leader.
Once they confirmed that nobody had been killed, one of the officers pulled out his radio.
“Central, this is Officer Martinez.
We have the suspects in custody.
Ghost Rider just appeared and dealt with them before we could.”
The officer glanced toward the burning trail disappearing into the distance.
“These are the same suspects we were pursuing for drug smuggling.
Ghost Rider disabled all of their vehicles.
He appears to be heading east at extremely high speed.”
The dispatcher acknowledged the report.
The officer lowered the radio.
“Whatever he’s chasing, he’s in a hurry.”
S.H.I.E.L.D.
Helicarrier…
Far above the clouds, inside the command center of the S.H.I.E.L.D.
Helicarrier,
Nick Fury stood before a large display filled with information from the Harlem incident.
The same problem had been sitting in front of him for days.
Nothing.
No Hulk.
No Bruce Banner.
No Betty Ross.
Every time Banner transformed into Hulk, Visit g.com for the full chapter.
S.H.I.E.L.D.
had been able to track him through the gamma radiation signature his body produced.
It wasn’t precise enough to pinpoint him instantly, but once they had a confirmed reading, they could follow the trail.
After Harlem, however, the trail had simply disappeared.
Fury had initially assumed that Banner had somehow moved outside their surveillance range.
Then the scientists checked again.
And again.
Nothing.
It was as though Bruce Banner and Hulk had simply ceased to exist.
Fury stared at the information displayed before him.
“How does a man who glows like a walking nuclear accident disappear without leaving a trace?”
The door opened behind him.
Maria Hill walked inside carrying a tablet.
“Sir.”
Fury turned to look at her.
“What have you got?”
“We have another Ghost Rider sighting.”
That immediately caught his attention.
“Where?”
“New York.
He was spotted near the Queensboro Bridge approximately seven minutes ago.
He’s currently moving east toward Long Island, maintaining extremely high speed.”
Fury’s expression tightened.
“Another sighting.”
Hill nodded her head.
“Police report says he intercepted a group of armed drug smugglers who were being pursued by the NYPD.
He disabled their motorcycles and left the suspects alive for the police to arrest.”
Fury looked back at the main screen.
“Did we get a face?”
“No.”
“Vehicle?”
“Motorcycle this time.”
Fury frowned hearing her.
“Not the car?”
“No sir currently he was using motorcycle.”
That caught his attention.
Hill continued,
“And there’s another problem.
We still can’t establish his identity.”
Fury turned toward her.
“Stark?”
Hill nodded her head hearing the name.
“Tony Stark.”
Fury’s expression became increasingly irritated.
“Of course.”
“JARVIS has been actively deleting or encrypting surveillance footage from the areas surrounding the Harlem incident.
We’ve reconstructed portions of the footage, but the sections most likely to reveal Ghost Rider’s human identity are gone.”
Fury rubbed his forehead.
“Stark is protecting him.”
“That’s what it looks like.”
Fury remained silent for several seconds.
Tony Stark rarely did anything without a reason.
If he was protecting Ghost Rider, then Fury wanted to know exactly why.
Was Ghost Rider an ally?
An asset?
A threat?
Or something else entirely?
Fury looked at the screen displaying the last known location of the flaming rider.
“Any connection between this Ghost Rider and the one from Harlem?”
Maria shook her head.
“We don’t know yet.”
Fury nodded slowly.
“Then find out.”
Hill waited.
Fury turned toward her.
“Send the assignment to Romanoff.”
Maria understood immediately.
“Natasha?”
“Yes send her.”
Fury folded his arms.
“She’s good at getting close to people who don’t want to be approached.
Ghost Rider doesn’t seem interested in talking to government agents, but maybe he’ll talk to someone who doesn’t introduce herself as one.”
Maria nodded with an understanding look on her face.
“What are her orders?”
Fury looked toward the display.
“Make contact.
Don’t provoke him.
Don’t try to arrest him.
Don’t start a fight.”
He paused.
“And most importantly, find out who Ghost Rider is, what he wants, and whether he knows anything about Banner.”
Maria made a note on her tablet.
“Understood.”
She turned toward the door.
“One more thing,”
Fury called back to remind her.
Maria stopped.
Fury’s expression hardened.
“If Stark is protecting him, assume Stark has already figured out something we haven’t.”
Maria nodded.
“I’ll inform Romanoff.”
She left the room.
Fury remained standing before the display, watching the rapidly moving marker representing Ghost Rider’s last known position.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he muttered to himself,
“First Hulk disappears.
Now Ghost Rider starts showing up whenever he feels like it.
Do they don’t have any face left as a S.H.I.E.L.D.”
He looked toward the darkened window of the Helicarrier.
