Meanwhile, several miles away from the bright lights of Stark Tower,
A completely different kind of business was taking place inside an old warehouse that had been converted into a makeshift laboratory.
The place smelled of chemicals, sweat and stale cigarettes, and the few lights hanging from the ceiling did little to make the room feel any less miserable.
A handful of men in plain clothes moved around the facility while several people sat or stood near the walls, most of them looking exhausted, frightened or simply too desperate to care about where they were.
Among them was a woman with dark circles beneath her eyes and an unsteady expression that suggested she hadn’t slept properly in days.
She stood in front of a bald man who was holding a small packet between two fingers.
“Come on,”
She muttered, staring at the packet.
“You said you’d give me more.”
The bald man smiled and deliberately held it just out of her reach.
“You’ll get it.
Don’t worry.”
The woman swallowed, her eyes fixed on the white powder.
“When?”
“After you do something for us.”
Her jaw tightened.
“You said the last job was the last one.”
“And I said if you wanted more, you’d have to cooperate.”
He shook the packet slightly, enjoying the way her attention followed it.
“You want this, don’t you?”
The woman clenched her teeth.
“Fine.
What do you want?”
The bald man smiled.
“That’s better.”
The men around them led her deeper into the warehouse.
She was taken through a set of metal doors into a laboratory that was clearly nowhere near a finished research facility.
The equipment was mismatched, some of it old enough to have probably been bought second-hand, while other machines looked as though they had been stolen from legitimate laboratories.
Glass containers filled with strange liquids covered several tables, and on one side of the room were medical monitors connected to makeshift examination chairs.
The woman glanced around while pretending to be frightened and confused.
Inside, she was carefully memorizing everything.
The people running this operation were trying to create something.
She had already suspected it, but seeing the equipment confirmed her suspicions.
This wasn’t a simple drug operation.
They were attempting to recreate a super-soldier formula.
The results were nowhere near stable.
Some of the samples had failed completely, while others had produced violent reactions in the test subjects.
The addicts being brought here weren’t merely being used to produce drugs.
They were being used as test subjects.
The woman lowered her head, maintaining her frightened expression while one of the men prepared another syringe.
Then her phone vibrated.
For half a second, she ignored it.
Then it vibrated again.
The bald man looked toward her.
“Who’s calling?”
She quickly pulled the phone from her pocket and glanced at the screen.
There was a single encrypted message.
[S.H.I.E.L.D.]
Her eyes moved across the message.
[URGENT PRIORITY MISSION
OPERATION: GHOST RIDER
OBJECTIVE: ESTABLISH CONTACT
DO NOT ENGAGE UNLESS NECESSARY]
Her expression barely changed.
But inside, the entire situation had just shifted.
She had spent days infiltrating this operation, pretending to be another desperate addict while gathering information about the laboratory and the people behind it.
Now Fury wanted her elsewhere.
Ghost Rider.
The mysterious supernatural figure who had appeared in Harlem and then continued appearing across different parts of the country.
She locked her phone and slipped it back into her pocket.
The bald man stepped toward her.
“You ready?”
The woman looked up.
“Yeah.”
He smiled with a smirk on his face.
“Good…
Be a good girl.”
He never saw the attack coming.
Her foot slammed into his chest, sending him backward into the table.
Before the others could react, she grabbed the pistol from his waistband and fired twice.
The first man dropped.
The second barely had time to turn before she struck him across the throat and took his weapon.
The room erupted into chaos.
“Get her!”
Several men rushed toward her at once.
That was their mistake.
She moved with a speed and precision that had absolutely nothing to do with the frightened addict they’d believed her to be.
She ducked beneath the first punch, drove her elbow into the man’s ribs and used his momentum to throw him into another attacker.
Before either could recover, she fired at the weapon in another man’s hand, knocking it away before closing the distance and dropping him with a combination of strikes.
Another man tried to grab her from behind.
She twisted free, drove her heel into his knee and sent him crashing to the floor.
Gunfire echoed through the warehouse.
She moved between the tables, using the equipment for cover while returning fire with controlled precision.
She wasn’t wasting ammunition, and she wasn’t fighting for spectacle.
Every movement had a purpose.
Within minutes, the laboratory had gone silent.
Fifteen men lay scattered across the floor, most unconscious, several wounded and none in any condition to continue the fight.
The woman calmly checked her weapon before approaching the bald man she’d attacked first.
He was still conscious, barely.
He stared at her in disbelief.
“Who…
the hell are you?”
The woman’s frightened expression was gone.
So was the trembling.
She looked down at him with cold professionalism.
“Someone who was getting tired of pretending.”
She retrieved the information she had gathered during the operation and turned toward the laboratory.
The drug-addicted woman they had believed they were controlling had never been helpless.
The entire performance had been part of her cover while she infiltrated the operation and traced the people behind the experimental serum.
Now she had another assignment.
Ghost Rider.
Natasha looked at the encrypted message on her phone once more.
She had no photograph.
No confirmed identity.
No reliable information about his abilities beyond what the public had already seen.
But she had been given one objective.
Get close to him.
Find out who he was.
And, if possible, determine whether the mysterious Ghost Rider could be turned into an ally of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Natasha slipped the phone back into her pocket and looked toward the shattered laboratory.
“Ghost Rider…”
A faint smile touched her lips.
“Let’s see what you’re hiding.”
Ghost Rider continued down the highway at a speed that would have made any normal rider question whether the laws of physics had simply decided to take the night off.
The motorcycle screamed beneath him, its wheels surrounded by Hellfire, while the flames trailing behind it stretched across the asphalt like glowing ribbons.
Cars barely had time to react before the burning rider was already several hundred meters ahead of them.
The problem came when he reached a section of road where traffic had practically turned the highway into a parking lot.
Ghost Rider slowed for only a moment.
He looked at the endless line of vehicles ahead.
Then at the buildings beside the road.
A normal rider would have been trapped.
Ghost Rider wasn’t exactly normal.
He turned the handlebars toward the nearest building.
The motorcycle slammed straight into the wall.
There was no crash.
Instead, the Hellfire surrounding the motorcycle intensified, and the entire machine passed through the concrete as though the wall were nothing more than another section of road.
Ghost Rider emerged on the other side, raced up the interior wall and continued toward the upper floors.
The people inside barely had time to notice the burning motorcycle tearing through their building.
Ghost Rider reached the rooftop, accelerated across it and launched himself over the edge.
The motorcycle landed on the next building.
Then another.
And another.
At times it looked less like riding and more like Ghost Rider had simply decided that every surface in New York was part of one enormous road.
He continued cutting across rooftops, parking structures and elevated sections of buildings, using the city itself to bypass the traffic completely.
The distance that should have taken nearly an hour was reduced to something far shorter.
About fifteen minutes after leaving Stark Tower, Ghost Rider finally descended toward the road ahead.
The motorcycle landed heavily on the asphalt.
Ghost Rider immediately spotted what he had been looking for.
The armored truck.
It was moving along the highway with several vehicles surrounding it, maintaining a tight formation.
The convoy had clearly been expecting trouble, and the reinforced vehicles suggested that whatever they were transporting was important enough for someone to spend serious money protecting it.
Ghost Rider accelerated.
The convoy’s rear vehicle spotted him first.
One of the men inside looked through the window.
His expression changed.
He grabbed his radio.
“Control, we’ve got him.
Ghost Rider is behind us.
He’s following the convoy.”
A voice came through the radio.
“Confirm?”
“Confirmed.”
The response came almost immediately.
“Engage him.”
The man barely had time to relay the order before weapons appeared from the windows of the surrounding vehicles.
Gunfire erupted.
Bullets tore across the road toward Ghost Rider.
He didn’t slow down.
The motorcycle weaved between the incoming fire as bullets sparked against the asphalt around him.
Ghost Rider leaned sideways, narrowly avoiding a burst that passed over his flaming skull.
One of the attackers leaned farther out of the vehicle, trying to get a clear shot.
Ghost Rider accelerated.
The distance disappeared.
He reached the vehicle and grabbed the man’s AK-47 with one hand.
The attacker pulled the trigger instinctively.
The weapon fired directly into Ghost Rider’s abdomen.
The bullets struck him.
And did absolutely nothing.
The attacker stared in disbelief.
Ghost Rider slowly looked down at the weapon.
Hellfire began crawling from his hand onto the rifle.
The metal immediately started glowing.
The flames spread along the weapon and into the man’s hands.
He screamed and released it, stumbling backward as the fire continued burning across his fingers.
Ghost Rider caught the falling rifle.
He spun it through the air, allowing it to rotate once before catching it properly.
Then he pointed it toward the vehicle ahead.
The rifle had changed.
Hellfire crawled along its barrel, wrapping around the weapon without consuming it.
Ghost Rider pulled the trigger.
The modified rounds tore through the vehicle.
The windshield shattered.
The driver lost control.
The vehicle swerved across the highway before crashing into the barrier.
Ghost Rider didn’t even slow down.
He continued after the main convoy.
For a moment, the remaining drivers thought he had been taken out by the crash.
Then the burning wreckage behind them moved.
A motorcycle emerged from the flames.
Ghost Rider was back on it.
The Hellfire surrounding the machine had become even brighter, and the AK-47 in his hand was still burning with supernatural fire.
One of the men inside the nearest vehicle stared through the rear window.
“He’s still coming!”
The driver swore and accelerated.
Ghost Rider simply smiled beneath his burning skull.
The motorcycle surged forward.
Within seconds, he was alongside them.
Then he launched himself into the air.
Ghost Rider landed directly on the roof of the moving vehicle.
The impact dented the metal beneath his boots.
The driver looked up through the reinforced roof window and saw the flaming figure standing above him.
His face went pale. Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.
Ghost Rider raised the Hellfire-coated AK-47.
Meanwhile, the motorcycle continued racing alongside the convoy.
No rider.
No hands on the handlebars.
No one controlling it.
Yet it remained perfectly balanced, following Ghost Rider as though it were connected to him by something far beyond an ordinary machine.
Inside the convoy, panic spread.
They had been prepared for armed attackers.
They had been prepared for police.
They had even been prepared for enhanced individuals.
But nobody had prepared them for a flaming skeleton who could ride through buildings, survive automatic gunfire and apparently control a motorcycle without even sitting on it.
Ghost Rider looked toward the armored truck at the center of the convoy.
That was where the girl was.
That was where the other children were.
He tightened his grip on the rifle.
“Hold on, kid.”
The flames around his skull burned brighter.
“I’m coming.”
Ghost Rider planted the Hellfire-coated AK-47 firmly against the roof of the moving car, the barrel pointed downward toward the men inside.
He didn’t bother trying to open the door or find another way in.
Instead, he simply pulled the trigger.
The first burst sounded ordinary for barely a second before the bullets changed.
Hellfire wrapped around each round as it left the weapon, and instead of simply punching through the roof, the burning projectiles detonated inside the vehicle like miniature grenades.
Explosions tore through the interior one after another, blowing out the windows and sending pieces of metal and glass across the highway.
The rear of the car lifted violently off the road, the entire vehicle tilting upward as though it were about to flip onto its roof.
Ghost Rider jumped away just before the car lost control completely.
He landed on the roof of another vehicle that had been trying to escape the convoy.
The driver slammed on the brakes the moment he saw the flaming figure land above him, causing the car to jerk violently beneath Ghost Rider’s boots.
Ghost Rider lost his footing for a moment and rolled across the roof, but instead of falling, he caught himself and slid forward until he came to a stop on the hood.
He slowly raised his head.
Four men inside the car were staring at him through the windshield.
“….”
“….”
“….”
For a moment, neither side moved.
Then all four men raised their weapons.
Ghost Rider stared at them.
The guns opened fire.
Bullets hammered into his body, sparks flying from his burning form as the windshield shattered around him.
He didn’t even flinch.
Instead, a deep, unnatural roar escaped his burning skull.
The sound wasn’t merely loud.
It was primal.
The four men froze.
Something in that roar reached deeper than ordinary fear, something instinctive that told them they were standing in front of a creature that didn’t belong in their world.
Ghost Rider stepped forward.
The remaining pieces of the windshield collapsed as he forced his way through the opening.
The men scrambled backward, desperately trying to reload and find somewhere to move, but the interior of the vehicle suddenly became a furnace.
Hellfire spread from Ghost Rider’s body across the seats, dashboard and doors, crawling through the vehicle faster than ordinary flames ever could.
The car began swerving across the highway.
One of the men screamed.
The vehicle jerked violently before an explosion erupted from inside.
The car spun across the road and came to a halt in a cloud of smoke and flames.
Ghost Rider calmly stepped out through the wreckage.
His flaming skull turned toward the road ahead.
The motorcycle that had been following him without a rider came racing toward him.
It slowed just enough for Ghost Rider to step onto it.
He didn’t even need to reach for the handlebars.
The motorcycle seemed to understand him.
The remaining convoy was now down to two vehicles.
One of them was still following the armored truck.
Ghost Rider accelerated.
The driver of the remaining escort vehicle looked into his rearview mirror and saw the flaming motorcycle rapidly closing the distance.
“He’s still coming!”
The man behind the wheel panicked.
He glanced toward the armored truck ahead, then back at Ghost Rider.
There was only one vehicle between Ghost Rider and the truck.
The driver made a decision.
He suddenly turned the steering wheel.
The car swung across the highway and began driving directly toward Ghost Rider.
Inside, the men braced themselves.
If they couldn’t stop the monster with weapons, perhaps they could simply crush him beneath several tons of metal.
Ghost Rider saw what they were doing.
He didn’t slow down.
He didn’t turn.
He didn’t even attempt to avoid the collision.
Instead, he raised the Hellfire-coated AK-47.
The driver stared at him through the windshield.
“Fire!”
Ghost Rider pulled the trigger.
The burning rounds slammed into the approaching vehicle.
Hellfire spread across the hood almost instantly.
The metal began glowing red.
The vehicle’s engine compartment erupted.
The front of the car lifted violently into the air as the explosion threw it upward.
The entire vehicle spun above the highway, its occupants barely able to comprehend what had happened.
Ghost Rider continued forward.
The burning car passed over him.
His motorcycle raced directly beneath the airborne vehicle without slowing down.
For a brief moment, Ghost Rider disappeared beneath the shadow of the spinning wreckage.
Then he emerged on the other side.
His attention never left the final target.
The escort cars were gone.
Only the armored truck remained.
The convoy that had begun the journey with multiple vehicles was now reduced to a single heavily protected truck speeding desperately down the highway.
Ghost Rider tightened his grip on the weapon.
The Hellfire around his motorcycle burned brighter.
The driver of the truck looked into the rear camera.
His face drained of color.
