Ghost Rider studied the woman standing in front of him.

Natasha had already slipped into the role she had been trained to play.

Her posture was relaxed, her expression slightly playful, and there was just enough confidence in the way she carried herself to make it seem as though she was deliberately trying to make the strange flaming man in front of her lower his guard.

Anyone who didn’t know her would probably assume she was simply another confident woman trying to charm a dangerous stranger.

Ghost Rider wasn’t fooled.

He knew exactly who she was.

The Black Widow.

A woman who had spent years lying, infiltrating, manipulating and killing when necessary.

Whatever expression she was wearing now was simply another weapon in her arsenal.

Ghost Rider finally spoke.

“Natasha Romanoff.”

For the first time since she had removed her helmet, Natasha’s expression genuinely changed.

It was subtle.

Just a brief widening of her eyes before her professional composure returned.

She had never introduced herself.

Not her real name.

Not her codename.

Nothing.

Yet this flaming stranger had addressed her by the name that very few people outside S.H.I.E.L.D.

knew.

Natasha tilted her head slightly, hiding her surprise behind a faint smile.

“So you know who I am.”

Ghost Rider gave a slow nod.

“Then you already know who I work for.

That depends,”

Natasha replied.

“Who do you think I work for?”

Ghost Rider gave a low chuckle.

“S.H.I.E.L.D.”

The amusement disappeared from Natasha’s expression.

Ghost Rider continued before she could respond.

“A joker organization that claims to protect the Earth while creating half the problems it later pretends to solve.”

Natasha’s eyes became completely dead.

The playful expression vanished.

She was no longer pretending to be some flirtatious woman who had accidentally stumbled across a supernatural biker.

Now she was the Black Widow.

And she had just learned something important.

Ghost Rider had absolutely no respect for S.H.I.E.L.D.

“That’s an interesting opinion,”

She said with a chuckle.

“It’s an good observation too.”

Natasha studied him.

“How did you know who I was?”

Ghost Rider laughed softly.

For half a second, he considered telling her to guess.

Then a good idea came to his mind.

He decided to lie.

And if there was one thing he had learned from watching enough movies and reading enough stories, sometimes the best lies were the ones that sounded just strange enough to make people wonder whether they might actually be true.

As for Ghost Rider he won’t need to tell a complete lie.

“A soul can’t hide its sins from the one who judges it.”

Natasha’s expression changed again.

This time, curiosity replaced suspicion.

“The one who judges it?”

Ghost Rider’s flames flickered.

“Perhaps you have already…”

“What does that mean?

Finish it…”

Ghost Rider looked at her for a moment.

Then he laughed.

Not a normal laugh.

The deep, unsettling laughter echoed across the empty highway, carrying through the darkness around them.

Natasha remained completely still, watching him carefully.

She had just been given a clue.

Or at least, she thought she had.

But Ghost Rider clearly had no intention of explaining it.

Instead, he turned toward his motorcycle.

Natasha took a step forward.

“Wait.”

Ghost Rider mounted the bike.

“You came looking for me.”

He looked back at her.

“You found me.”

Natasha narrowed her eyes.

“That isn’t an answer for my question.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

Giving answers which didn’t answer her questions.

The motorcycle’s engine roared to life.

Hellfire surged across its wheels.

Natasha watched as Ghost Rider slowly twisted the throttle.

“Ghost Rider.”

He paused.

She looked directly at him.

“Who are you?”

Ghost Rider stared at her for a moment.

Then his flaming skull tilted slightly.

“Someone who knows when to leave.

When a beauty tries a horny trap.”

The motorcycle suddenly accelerated.

Natasha watched him disappear down the highway, the trail of Hellfire becoming smaller and smaller until it eventually vanished into the darkness.

She stood there silently.

She had been sent to establish contact with Ghost Rider.

She had succeeded.

But instead of answers, she had received were the bunch of gibberish.

Who was he?

How did he know her real name?

What did he mean when he talked about judging souls?

And, most importantly, how much did he actually know about S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Natasha looked toward the burning trail he had left behind.

For the first time since receiving the mission, she had the uncomfortable feeling that she was not the one in control.

Ghost Rider had known exactly who she was from the moment they met.

And he had deliberately chosen what she was allowed to learn.

Ghost Rider continued down the highway for several minutes, leaving the ruined convoy and Natasha far behind him.

The motorcycle’s engine roared beneath him while the Hellfire around its wheels burned steadily, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

He kept replaying the encounter in his head, especially the way Natasha had immediately switched from her playful act to her professional expression the moment he revealed that he knew who she was.

He had no doubt that she would report everything to S.H.I.E.L.D.

That was fine.

He hadn’t exactly been trying to hide from them.

He simply didn’t want them getting too close.

Eventually, Ghost Rider slowed the motorcycle and looked around to make sure there was no traffic nearby.

He raised the Hellfire-coated AK-47 in front of him.

“Let’s see if this works.”

He pulled the trigger.

Instead of a bullet, a burst of Hellfire shot forward.

The space ahead of him distorted.

A circular tear opened in the air, revealing the familiar black soil and orange-red sky of his dimension.

Ghost Rider didn’t hesitate.

He accelerated directly toward it.

The motorcycle crossed the threshold and vanished.

The portal collapsed behind him, leaving nothing but an empty stretch of road.

Natasha remained beside her motorcycle for several seconds after Ghost Rider disappeared.

She slowly exhaled.

“Well…”

A laugh suddenly came through her earpiece.

Natasha closed her eyes.

She already knew who it was.

“Enjoying yourself, Barton?”

Another quiet laugh came through the communicator.

“I’ve got to admit, Romanoff, I’ve never seen anyone play you that badly.”

Natasha rolled her eyes.

“Thanks for the support.”

Clint Barton had been nearby the entire time, hidden in a carefully selected position with his bow already drawn.

He had been watching Ghost Rider from a distance and listening to the entire conversation through Natasha’s communication channel.

He had seen enough to understand what had happened.

Natasha had gone in expecting to gather information.

Ghost Rider had known her identity before she even introduced herself, insulted the organization she worked for, gave her a cryptic statement about judging souls and then simply rode away.

Clint couldn’t help laughing again.

“Seriously, Nat.

He knew your real name.”

“I noticed.”

“And then he basically told you nothing.”

“I noticed that too.

Except a few tease on who he might be…”

“And you still don’t know who he is.”

Natasha stared down the highway.

“You’re really enjoying this, aren’t you?

Seeing me being played…”

“A little.

It’s a rare thing happens once in a few times you know…”

“Keep talking and I’ll tell Fury you lost your bow again.”

There was silence.

Then Clint replied,

“That’s low…

I didn’t lose it…

You have done something to it…

I just can’t prove it.”

Natasha smiled faintly.

Several miles above them, aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Helicarrier, Nick Fury had been listening to the entire exchange.

He leaned back slightly in his chair after Ghost Rider disappeared from the surveillance feed.

For a man who had spent years dealing with spies, enhanced individuals, aliens and enough classified projects to fill several lifetimes,

Fury still couldn’t decide what to make of this particular man.

Ghost Rider clearly knew about S.H.I.E.L.D.

Not only that, he had a terrible opinion of the organization.

Fury frowned.

“What exactly did we do to him?”

Maria Hill, standing nearby, looked at the reports on her tablet.

“We don’t know that he has any personal history with S.H.I.E.L.D.”

“Then why does he hate us?”

“Maybe he doesn’t hate us personally.

He might simply distrust government organizations.”

Fury looked toward her.

“That’s one hell of a distinction when the guy can survive automatic weapons fire and open portals with a rifle.”

Maria didn’t disagree.

Fury looked back toward the screen.

The footage of Ghost Rider was still frozen on the display.

The flaming skull.

The Hellfire.

The impossible motorcycle.

And the ability to open dimensional gateways anywhere he wants.

There were too many unknowns.

Fury still couldn’t decide whether Ghost Rider was a potential threat to the planet or someone who could become one of its greatest protectors.

What he did know was that Ghost Rider had already saved thousands of civilians in Harlem, rescued five mutant children from Weapon X organization and deliberately avoided killing the people who weren’t directly involved in his mission.

That didn’t sound like someone looking for chaos.

But Fury had learned a long time ago that appearances could be deceiving.

“Romanoff stays on him,”

Fury finally said.

Maria nodded hearing the order.

“Continue the contact mission?”

“Yes.”

Fury looked toward Natasha’s last known position.

“Every time Ghost Rider appears, she makes contact.

No attempt to capture him.

No aggressive action unless he becomes hostile.”

“And if he refuses?”

Fury’s expression hardened.

“Then she follows him until we figure out what we’re dealing with.”

Maria nodded her head.

“I’ll update her orders.”

Fury turned back toward the screen.

“Ghost Rider knows who we are.”

He paused.

“Now we need to find out who he is.

To show him what’s our capability is.”

Far away, inside a dimension that S.H.I.E.L.D.

couldn’t even detect, Ghost Rider had already returned to the place he now called home.

And completely unaware that Fury had just made Natasha Romanoff’s investigation into him her permanent assignment,

Inside his dimension,

Raja finally allowed the flames covering his body to disappear.

The transformation receded gradually, the Hellfire withdrawing from his clothes and bones until the familiar sixteen-year-old boy stood where Ghost Rider had been only moments ago.

He looked down at the five children, who were still staring at him with a mixture of curiosity and uncertainty.

They had spent the last several hours being dragged around by people who treated them like experimental material, and now the terrifying flaming creature who had stormed into the truck had suddenly become a normal-looking teenager.

Raja couldn’t help noticing the confusion on their faces.

“Yeah, I know,”

He said, giving them a small smile.

“The flaming skeleton and this guy don’t exactly look like the same person.”

One of the boys cautiously stepped forward.

“You’re the one who saved us?”

Raja nodded his head hearing his question.

“I am kid.”

The little girl who had called for help was still looking at him more openly than the others.

There was still some fear in her expression, but most of it had already been replaced by curiosity.

“Where are we?”

She asked quietly.

“My dimension, It’s safe here.

Nobody from that organization can come after you unless they somehow find a way in, and I don’t think they’re going to figure that out anytime soon.”

He glanced around the empty landscape.

“It’s not exactly a five-star resort yet, but we’re working on it.”

The children looked around.

Raja could practically see the question forming on their faces.

“Don’t worry, You’re not going to be sleeping outside.

Betty is already preparing food for you, and Bruce is checking your health and mutations.

Once we understand what your abilities are and what you’ve been through, we’ll figure out what to do next.”

As if on cue, Betty’s voice came from nearby.

“Raj!”

He turned around.

“Food’s almost ready.”

The children immediately looked toward her.

Betty smiled at them and gestured toward the temporary shelter.

“Come on.

You must be hungry.”

The children slowly followed her.

Bruce was already examining some of the equipment he had managed to put together, studying the medical readings and trying to understand the unusual biology of the children.

His scientific curiosity was obvious, but he was careful not to make them feel like specimens again.

Raja watched them for a moment.

At least they were safe now.

That was enough for tonight.

He raised his right hand.

Hellfire immediately gathered around his fingers.

He drew a circle through the air, and a portal opened.

This time, instead of opening somewhere random, Raja deliberately pictured Stark Tower.

The other side of the portal revealed the parking area beneath the tower.

Bruce nodded his head.

“We’ll take care of them.”

Raja stepped through.

The portal closed behind him.

Raja adjusted his suit as he entered the parking area beneath Stark Tower.

He quickly checked himself in the reflection of a nearby vehicle, making sure there wasn’t anything obvious left behind from his little trip across the city.

Nothing.

Perfect.

He made his way toward the elevator and pressed the button.

As the doors opened, Raja stepped inside and headed back toward the gathering.

For a moment, he wondered how he was going to explain everything.

Then he remembered who he needed to speak with.

Charles Xavier.

Jean Grey.

Ororo Munroe.

If anyone could provide a proper home for the children, it would be Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

The elevator doors opened.

Raja stepped back into the party.

The gathering was still going strong.

People were talking, laughing and networking as though the world outside wasn’t filled with super-soldiers, mutant experiments and flaming supernatural bikers.

Raja’s eyes immediately found his parents.

Jagadish and Grace were standing together with several guests.

The moment Grace noticed him, her expression changed.

Raja smiled and discreetly gave her a small thumbs-up.

‘I’m fine.’

Grace let out a quiet breath of relief.

Jagadish noticed the exchange and looked at his son carefully.

Neither parent knew exactly where Raja had gone.

They didn’t need to.

They had learned enough about their son by now to recognize that when he disappeared without explanation, there was probably something involving Ghost Rider that needed to be dealt with.

As long as he came back safely, they weren’t going to interrogate him in the middle of a party.

Raja’s attention then shifted toward the bar.

Jean was sitting there alone.

Emma had disappeared somewhere into the crowd, probably continuing her endless campaign of collecting influential contacts, while Jean seemed content to enjoy a few minutes without someone talking her ear off.

Raja walked toward her.

Jean noticed him before he reached the chair.

“You came back.”

Raja sat beside her.

She looked him over.

“You disappeared rather suddenly.

You looked like something had just occurred to you.”

“Something did happen Jean.”

Jean’s expression became more serious.

“Is everything alright?”

Raja nodded his head with a sigh.

“For the most part.”

He glanced around.

The area was relatively quiet, and nobody seemed to be paying attention to them.

Raja leaned slightly closer.

Jean raised an eyebrow at the sudden movement.

Raja lowered his voice and whispered near her ear.

“I found five mutant children.”

Jean’s expression immediately changed.

Raja continued quietly.

“They were being transported in an armored truck.

Whoever had them was experimenting on them.

They were heavily restrained, and I think they were being treated as biological material rather than people.”

Jean’s face hardened hearing his words.

“Where are they?”

“Now they were safe.”

Her eyes met his this time serious.

“Where?

I need to know…”

“My dimension.”

Jean stared at him for a second.

Raja continued before she could ask anything else.

“They’re frightened, but Betty and Bruce are looking after them.

I want to bring them here eventually, but I don’t think my dimension is the right place for children who need proper education and people who understand their mutations.”

Jean immediately understood what he was asking.

“You want us to take them.”

“Not exactly force you to take them,”

Raja replied he knew Charles has some standard before taking in a mutant kids into his school.

“I want you, Charles and Ororo to meet them first.

If you think they would be safer at Xavier’s School, I’d like you to take them in.”

Jean remained silent for a moment.

“….”

Her expression wasn’t playful anymore.

She was thinking about the children.

Five mutant children.

Captured.

Restrained.

Experimented on.

She couldn’t simply ignore that.

Jean closed her eyes briefly and reached out with her telepathy.

Across the room, Charles Xavier was speaking with another guest when her voice suddenly entered his mind.

‘Charles.’

He immediately recognized the seriousness in her tone.

‘Jean?’

‘Raj has found five mutant children.’

Charles’ attention shifted.

‘What?

You mean…’

Jean continued transmitting everything Raja had told her, including the fact that the children had been captured by an unknown organization and were now being kept safely inside Raja’s private dimension.

Charles’ expression gradually changed as he listened.

His eyes moved toward Raja.

The young man was still sitting beside Jean, quietly watching the crowd.

Charles had initially approached Raja because he suspected there was something unusual about him.

Now he realized that he had been right.

But whatever Raja was, whatever powers he possessed and whatever secrets surrounded him, he had just rescued five mutant children who otherwise might never have been seen again.

Charles looked toward Jean.

‘Bring him to me.’

Jean nodded slightly.

Then Charles added one more thought.

‘And Jean…

tell him they will have a home at the school if the children want it.’

Jean smiled faintly.

She turned toward Raja.

“I think Charles wants to speak with you.”

Raja nodded hearing her.

Seems like they had a conversation through their telepathy.

“Good.”

He stood up as he made his way.

Jean followed besides him.

Together, they began walking across the gathering toward Charles Xavier and Ororo.

Neither of them noticed Emma Frost standing several meters away, watching the entire interaction with narrowed eyes.

She had returned just in time to see Jean and Raja walking toward Charles after sharing a kiss.

If not it at least looked at one.

She even took a click on her mobile…

And judging by Jean’s expression, whatever Raja had told her was important.

Emma’s curiosity immediately returned.

This boy had become considerably more interesting than she had originally expected.

He let Jean kiss her….
