S.H.I.E.L.D.

Helicarrier…

Meanwhile, aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Helicarrier,

Agent Coulson walked through the corridor with a file tucked firmly beneath his arm.

He had been trying very hard to maintain his usual professional expression, but anyone who knew him well would have noticed the barely contained excitement in his eyes.

The file in his hand had only one name written across it.

STEVE ROGERS

Coulson had spent years studying the history of Captain America.

To him, Steve Rogers wasn’t merely another enhanced individual from an old war record.

He was Captain America.

The man who had become a symbol of everything Coulson admired about the old generation of heroes, long before aliens, gods and super-powered individuals had become part of everyday life.

And now that man was alive.

They had finally located Rogers beneath the ice and recovered him from his seventy-year cryogenic sleep.

His condition had initially been unstable, but the medical team had been monitoring him continuously, and his vitals were now returning to normal.

Coulson entered Fury’s office and walked toward the desk.

“Director.”

Nick Fury looked up from his work.

Coulson placed the file in front of him.

“We have an update on Rogers.”

Fury opened the file and began reading.

The report contained page after page of medical observations, neurological activity and recovery projections.

Steve Rogers’ vital signs were stabilizing far faster than the medical team had expected.

His body had responded remarkably well to the thawing process, and according to the latest projection, he would regain consciousness within the next hour or two.

Fury closed the file.

“Good.”

Coulson couldn’t stop himself from smiling.

“Very good.”

Fury glanced at him.

“You look like a kid who just got his Christmas present.”

Coulson straightened hearing the remarks.

“Sir, with respect, Captain America is Captain America.”

Fury gave him an amused look before opening one of the drawers in his desk.

Inside was another file.

Unlike the medical report, this one carried a thick red seal across its cover.

HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL

And beneath it, printed in bold letters:

AVENGERS INITIATIVE

Fury rested his hand on the file for a moment.

The idea had been sitting in his mind for years.

A team.

Not another temporary group thrown together when something went wrong, but a permanent defensive force capable of responding to threats that ordinary military units couldn’t handle.

The world was changing too quickly.

Mutants.

Enhanced individuals.

Aliens.

Advanced technology.

Unknown supernatural entities.

And now Ghost Rider.

Fury had spent considerable time navigating the legal and political minefield required to establish such an organization.

Getting governments to agree to a multinational team of enhanced individuals was proving to be considerably more difficult than putting the idea on paper.

But Captain America could change that.

If Steve Rogers woke up and agreed to help, the Avengers Initiative would have its first real foundation.

Fury closed the drawer.

“Keep me updated.”

Coulson nodded his head.

“Yes, sir.”

He turned to leave, but Fury stopped him.

“Coulson.”

He turned around.

“Try not to scare him.”

Coulson’s expression became slightly confused.

“Sir?

He’s been asleep for seventy years.”

Coulson understood but he still not sure how Captain will react.

Fury returned his attention to the reports.

“Let’s give the man a chance to wake up before we dump the twenty-first century on his head.”

Several floors below, S.H.I.E.L.D.

had prepared a special recovery room.

It had been designed to resemble a hospital room from the early twentieth century, complete with old-fashioned furniture, period-appropriate medical equipment and a wooden radio sitting on the nearby table.

Even the curtains and decorations had been chosen carefully.

The intention was simple.

Don’t tell Steve Rogers that seventy years had passed the moment he opened his eyes.

Let him wake up somewhere familiar.

Give him a few minutes.

Let him believe he had simply been unconscious for a short period.

A baseball game played quietly through the old radio.

Steve’s eyes slowly opened.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the ceiling.

His breathing was steady.

His body felt strange, almost stiff, but surprisingly strong.

He slowly turned his head.

The room looked familiar.

Too familiar.

The old wooden radio caught his attention.

A baseball commentator was speaking excitedly about the game.

Steve listened to it as his brow slowly furrowed.

He recognized the broadcast.

He remembered it.

He had been there.

He remembered the date, The month and The game.

His eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.”

A woman dressed in an old military-style uniform stood nearby.

She had been instructed to behave as though Steve had only recently awakened from a short coma.

She smiled cautiously.

“Captain Rogers, you should probably remain in bed.”

Steve sat up hearing her.

“Where am I?”

“You’re in a recovery facility.”

“What happened?”

“You’ve been unconscious for…”

She hesitated for a second.

“Some time.”

Steve looked toward the radio.

“What game is that?”

The woman paused hearing him.

“It’s a baseball game.”

“I know that.”

He looked directly at her as if he was searching for answer.

“When was it played?”

She swallowed hearing his question which she had never prepared for.

“Captain…”

“When?”

She gave him the date randomly.

Steve stared at her as his expression changed.

“No.”

He slowly stood from the bed.

“The date.”

The woman repeated it.

Steve’s face hardened as if he had found out.

“That’s the game I attended.”

She said nothing.

“I was there.”

Steve looked around the room.

“That game was years before I become Captain America.”

The woman stepped toward him.

“Captain Rogers, please calm down.”

Steve immediately noticed the tension in her posture.

Something was wrong.

He looked at the door and then back at her.

“Who are you?”

Before she could answer, the door suddenly opened.

Several armed S.H.I.E.L.D.

agents entered.

Steve didn’t know that.

All he saw were armed men entering a room after someone had lied to him.

His instincts took over.

The first agent barely had time to raise his weapon before Steve moved.

He grabbed the man’s arm, twisted it aside and struck him across the chest.

The agent went flying.

Another rushed toward him.

Steve ducked beneath the attack, grabbed the man’s uniform and threw him through the artificial wall.

The carefully constructed room shattered.

The fake hospital wall collapsed, revealing the modern facility behind it.

Steve stopped as he looked around.

The old hospital room was gone.

The walls were modern which he never saw before.

The equipment was unfamiliar.

The armed personnel were wearing technology he had never seen before.

Steve slowly stepped through the broken section of the room.

His eyes widened.

Beyond the recovery chamber was an enormous modern facility.

Everything was wrong.

The technology, The architecture, The people.

Even the world outside the windows looked different.

Steve looked back at the shattered room.

“They lied to me.”

The woman stepped out behind him.

“Captain Rogers…”

Steve turned toward her.

“Where am I?”

She didn’t answer.

Steve’s jaw tightened.

“I asked…

Where am I?”

Before she could respond, a calm voice came through the facility speakers.

“Captain Rogers.”

Steve looked around as he started to get tensed.

Steve didn’t wait around for the woman to give him another vague answer.

Everything about the situation was wrong, and the more he looked around, the more convinced he became that staying inside this facility was not going to get him anywhere.

The room he had woken up in had been fake, the people around him were clearly hiding something, and armed men had entered the moment he started asking questions.

Whatever this place was, Steve didn’t trust it.

So he did the only thing that came naturally to him when he didn’t trust a situation.

He left.

“Captain Rogers, wait!”

The woman hurried after him, but Steve was already halfway down the corridor.

Two S.H.I.E.L.D.

agents tried to block his path, but neither had any chance of stopping him.

Steve slipped past the first one, caught the second by the arm when he tried to grab him, and redirected his momentum into the wall.

He wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

He simply wanted to get out.

By the time the security personnel realized that physically stopping him wasn’t going to work, Steve had already reached the exit.

The woman immediately touched the earpiece hidden beneath her hair.

“Agent Coulson, Captain Rogers has left the facility.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

“He’s what?”

“He escaped.

We couldn’t stop him without escalating the situation.”

Coulson closed his eyes for a moment.

“Where is he heading?”

“Into the city.”

Coulson immediately contacted Fury.

“Director, we’ve got a situation.”

Fury looked up from the report in front of him.

“Rogers?”

“Yes, sir.

He left the recovery facility.”

Fury stared at him for a few seconds.

“Where is he going?”

“New York.”

Fury leaned back in his chair and rubbed his forehead.

He had spent months planning how to introduce Steve Rogers to the modern world, and somehow the first thing Captain America had done after waking up was escape from the carefully prepared room.

Fury couldn’t even blame him.

Steve stepped onto the street and stopped.

For several seconds, he simply stood there.

This was New York.

He knew it was New York.

But it didn’t feel like the city he remembered.

The buildings were taller.

The roads were filled with strange-looking cars, buses and trucks that seemed far more advanced than anything he had ever seen.

People walked around staring at small glowing screens in their hands, some speaking into them without even looking at the person beside them.

Steve watched one man walk past while talking to what appeared to be a tiny device attached to his ear.

He frowned looking at all these.

“How does that thing even work?”

Nobody answered.

A bus passed in front of him, blocking his view for a moment.

When it moved away, Steve looked across the street and saw a huge electronic advertisement covering the side of a building.

He stared at it.

He then looked down at his own clothes.

For the first time, he became painfully aware of how out of place he looked.

Everything had changed.

The cars, The buildings, The technology, The clothes.

Even the way people behaved.

Steve slowly began walking, trying to take everything in without looking like a man who had just fallen out of a history book.

He passed a shop window and caught sight of a television playing inside.

The news was showing footage of Ghost Rider.

Steve stopped for a moment.

He didn’t understand what was happening, but the image of a flaming skull riding a burning motorcycle certainly caught his attention.

He watched for a few seconds before moving on.

He had too many questions already.

Adding a flaming skeleton to the list wasn’t going to help.

Meanwhile, several blocks away,

Raja was walking toward a Lego store with Peter and Ned.

Ned had been talking almost nonstop since they left school.

“I’ve been waiting for this set for months.

Do you understand how difficult it was to find the last one?

I had to check three stores before I finally found it, and now this one is supposed to be even more limited.”

Peter glanced at him.

“You said that about the last set.”

“Because the last set was limited.”

“You bought it.”

“Exactly.

Which means I know what I’m talking about.”

Raja laughed hearing their banter.

“You two can turn buying Lego into a serious business meeting.”

Ned looked offended.

“It is serious.”

Peter shook his head, but he was smiling.

They walked another few steps before Peter suddenly became quiet.

Raja noticed his silence.

“You’ve gone silent.

That’s usually a bad sign.”

Peter sighed hearing him.

“I need some advice.”

Ned immediately looked at him.

“About Liz?”

Peter’s face reddened.

Raja laughed looking at Peter’s reaction.

“That obvious?”

Peter shoved his hands into his pockets.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.

Every time I think about talking to her, Flash is around with his friends, and then I just…”

“You panic?”

Ned offered with a chuckle.

“I don’t panic.”

“You absolutely panic.”

Ned gave him a look.

“Peter, you’ve been staring at her for months.”

Raja nodded he too had noticed how Peter behaves before her.

“He’s right.”

Peter looked at Raja.

“But I don’t know how to actually talk to her without making myself look stupid.”

Raja thought about it for a moment.

“Then don’t start by asking her out.”

Peter looked at him.

“What should I do?”

“Talk to her normally first.

You already have her number, right?”

Peter nodded head as he took his mobile to show the contact he has.

“Then message her.

Just start a conversation.

Ask how her day went, talk about something from class, whatever comes naturally.

If the conversation goes well and you two actually start talking regularly, then ask her if she’d like to grab dinner sometime.”

Ned nodded enthusiastically.

“Exactly.

That’s much better than Peter walking up to her in front of Flash and suddenly forgetting every English word he’s ever learned.”

“I wouldn’t do that.”

“You did it last week.

And nearly got Flash special head massage.”

Peter’s ears turned red.

“That was different.”

Raja shaking his head looked at Peter.

“Just take it slowly.

You don’t have to turn one conversation into a relationship.”

Peter seemed to relax a little.

“Yeah.

I guess you’re right.”

Ned suddenly pointed toward the store.

“There!”

His entire expression changed.

The Lego set was displayed prominently behind the glass.

Ned practically dragged Peter toward the entrance.

“Come on!

Before somebody buys it!”

Peter looked back at Raja.

“He’s been waiting for this all week.”

The three of them entered the store, with Ned immediately heading toward the display while Peter followed him.

Raja shook his head with a smile.

Peter and Ned had already disappeared into the Lego store, with Ned practically dragging Peter toward the display section because he was afraid that somebody might get to the limited-edition set before him.

Raja was about to follow them when a man suddenly came around the corner, apparently distracted by everything around him, and nearly walked straight into him.

Raja reacted without thinking.

His hand shot forward and caught the man;s right hand ankle wrist before they could collide.

“Careful.”

The man stopped immediately.

Raja looked up at him, ready to apologize for grabbing him, but the words never came out.

He knew that face.

The blond hair, the broad shoulders, the square jaw, the old-fashioned clothes and that slightly confused expression that made him look like someone had dropped him into the middle of New York without giving him a map.

Raja’s eyes widened looking at the man before him.

‘No way.’

It was him.

Steve Rogers.

Captain America.

The same Captain America who had just woken up after spending roughly seventy years frozen in ice.

Steve seemed equally surprised, although for a completely different reason.

His eyes dropped toward Raja’s hand, which was still wrapped around his ankle wrist.

Raja realized what he was doing and immediately let go.

“Sorry.

Reflex.”

Steve rubbed his wrist for a moment before looking back at the teenager.

“You’ve got quite a grip.”

Raja gave him an awkward smile.

“I guess I do.”

Steve looked at him for another second.

There was something unusual about the boy.

He didn’t look particularly intimidating, but the strength behind that brief grip had caught Steve completely off guard.

“Do you work out?”

“Yeah, sometimes.”

Before Steve could ask anything else, a familiar electronic voice suddenly echoed inside Raja’s mind.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[Important Character Contact Detected.]

[Character Identified: Steve Rogers]

[Title: Captain America]

[XP Awarded: +1,500]

Raja almost stared at Steve like he had just won the lottery.

His previous balance had been 535 XP, and the system had just added another 1,500 XP simply because he had grabbed Captain America’s wrist.

[Current System Level: 4]

[Current XP: 2,035 / 100,000]

Raja couldn’t help smiling.

‘Well, that was definitely worth getting nearly run over.’

Steve noticed the sudden change in his expression.

“Something funny?”

Raja quickly shook his head.

“No, nothing.

I was just thinking.”

Steve nodded, although he clearly wasn’t completely convinced.

For a few seconds, the two simply stood there while people continued walking around them.

Raja found himself looking at Steve again.

The man was trying his best to act normal, but there was no hiding the fact that he looked completely lost.

His eyes kept moving from one building to another, then toward the traffic, then toward the people walking around with phones in their hands.

Raja finally gave in.

“You look like you could use some help.”

Steve gave him a slightly embarrassed smile.

“Is it that obvious?”

“Pretty much.

You’ve been looking around like you’re expecting someone to explain where you are.”

Steve let out a quiet breath.

“That’s because I’m trying to figure out where I am.”

“New York.”

“I know it’s New York.”

Raja raised an eyebrow.

“Then what’s confusing you?”

Steve looked toward the road, watching several modern cars pass by.

“Everything.”

Raja followed his gaze.

Steve continued to speak,

“The cars are different, the buildings are different, people are carrying things I’ve never seen before, and I walked past a store where a television was showing a baseball game.”

Raja’s expression changed.

He already knew what Steve was talking about.

The man really had no idea.

“You really don’t know what year it is, do you?”

Steve looked at him.

“No.”

Raja scratched the side of his head.

“That’s…

going to be a difficult conversation.”

Steve gave him a tired look.

“I’ve already figured that out.”

Raja almost laughed.

There was something strangely normal about talking to him.

Despite everything Steve had been through, he wasn’t behaving like some larger-than-life legend.

He was simply a man trying to understand why the world around him had changed.

Raja looked toward the Lego store.

Peter and Ned were still inside, and from the way Ned was gesturing through the glass, he had probably already found the set he wanted.

Raja looked back at Steve.

“Do you have somewhere to go?”

Steve shook his head.

“Not yet.

I was hoping to find someone who could explain what’s happened.”

Steve already was getting a feeling that the boy before him knew his identity even through he was not wearing his costume.

Raja understood the problem.

He could probably call Tony.

But that would mean explaining why he had found Captain America wandering around the streets.

And considering how much Tony already knew about him, that would probably lead to a dozen questions.

Raja sighed as he acted like he was going with the flow not exposing the fact he new him.

“Look, I’m supposed to shop with my friends inside that store, but you don’t exactly look like someone who knows where he’s going.”

Steve smiled faintly as his eyes keep wandering to see if any pursuit is after him.

“That’s fair.”

“You can come with us for now.

We’ll figure out where you need to go afterward.”

Steve hesitated for a second.

“You don’t even know me.”

Raja shrugged his shoulders.

“I know enough.

And you will soon know….”

Steve studied him for a moment, apparently trying to decide whether trusting a random teenager was a good idea.

Finally, he nodded.

“Alright.

Thank you.”
