Steve looked at the teenager for a moment longer.
There was something about Raja that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.
The boy wasn’t behaving like someone who had just met a confused stranger on the street.
If anything, he had the irritatingly calm expression of someone who already knew exactly what was going on and was simply waiting for Steve to catch up.
Steve had spent enough time in unfamiliar situations to recognize when wandering around without a plan was a bad idea.
So, rather than continue walking through a city that seemed to belong to another era, he decided to trust the kid for the moment.
He extended his hand.
“Steve Rogers.”
Raja looked at the offered hand and shook it.
“Raja.
My friends call me Raj.”
Steve nodded his head.
“Nice to meet you, Raj.”
Raja smiled slightly.
“Nice to meet you too, Captain America.”
Steve’s expression immediately changed.
He slowly withdrew his hand.
“Excuse me?”
Raja could practically see the question forming in his eyes.
Steve looked around instinctively before lowering his voice.
“How do you know that name?”
Raja noticed the sudden seriousness in his expression and couldn’t blame him.
As far as Steve remembered, his identity had been kept extremely well protected.
During the war, only a handful of people knew that the man underneath the mask was Steve Rogers.
Most people knew Captain America, not Steve.
Yet this teenager had recognized him without a uniform, shield or helmet.
Raja gave him a reassuring smile.
“Relax.
I know who you are.
I know about Captain America, Steve Rogers, the war, the Red Skull, the plane, and what happened afterward.
I’ll explain everything, but not here on the sidewalk.”
Steve stared at him.
“You know what happened to me?”
“More than you probably want to hear right now.”
That answer didn’t exactly make Steve feel better.
Still, he followed.
It was better than wandering around New York with absolutely no idea what year it was.
When they entered the Lego store, Peter and Ned were still standing near the display they had been arguing about, completely absorbed in the model in front of them.
Ned was pointing toward one particular section.
“Look at the way they’ve built the upper structure.
That’s insane.
They actually used separate pieces for the support beams.”
Peter nodded his head in awe.
“I know.
I didn’t even notice that at first.”
Then Peter looked toward the entrance.
“Raj, what took you so long?”
He stopped in the mid sentence.
Ned stopped talking.
Both boys stared at the man standing beside Raja.
For several seconds, neither of them said anything.
Peter’s eyes widened.
Ned’s mouth slowly fell open.
Raja looked between them and couldn’t help smiling.
“Guys, this is Steve.”
Ned stared at Steve.
Peter stared at Steve.
Steve stared back at both of them, becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the silence.
Finally Ned whispered as he couldn’t believe his eyes,
“That’s Captain America.”
Peter nodded slowly.
“Yeah.”
Ned looked at Raja.
“That’s actually Captain America.”
“I know.”
Peter looked at Steve again.
“But…
that’s actually Captain America.”
Steve frowned hearing even this two kids knew him.
“Why does everyone keep calling me that?”
Raja laughed looking at his reaction.
“Because who don’t know Captain America.”
Steve looked increasingly confused.
Peter seemed to suddenly remember something.
“Wait, your biography is shown at school.”
Steve blinked confused.
“My what?”
“Our school shows documentaries about you,”
Peter explained with a excited smile on his face.
“They teach us about World War II and the war effort and…
Captain America.”
Ned nodded quickly.
“There’s literally a whole section about you.”
Steve looked at Raja.
Raja simply shrugged.
“You’re kind of famous.”
“Kind of?”
Ned gave Steve an incredulous look.
“You’re Captain America.”
Steve looked genuinely uncomfortable with that.
He had expected perhaps a few people to recognize the uniform.
He hadn’t expected teenagers to recognize his face.
Raja noticed that Steve was becoming overwhelmed and decided to stop torturing him.
“Okay, before you two completely break his brain, let’s answer one question first.”
He turned toward Steve.
“What year do you think it is?”
Steve looked at him as though the question itself was strange.
“It’s 1945.”
Ned immediately blurted out,
“It’s 2012.”
Steve froze hearing it.
The entire expression on his face changed.
He slowly turned toward Ned.
“What?”
Ned realized what he had just done.
“Uh…”
Peter looked at him.
“Ned.”
“What?
He asked!”
Steve looked at Raja.
Raja nodded quietly.
“Ned’s right.”
Steve’s face became pale.
Raja pointed toward the large clock mounted on the wall.
The clock displayed the current time, and beneath it was the date.
2012.
Steve stared at it.
He took a step toward the clock, as though getting closer might somehow make the numbers change.
They didn’t.
He stood there silently for several seconds.
Then he looked back at Raja.
“Seventy years?”
Raja nodded his head.
Steve’s breathing became heavier.
He looked around the store again.
The teenagers, The strange clothes, The phones.
The cars visible through the glass.
Everything suddenly made sense.
He hadn’t been unconscious for a few hours.
He hadn’t been recovering from a short coma.
He hadn’t somehow ended up in a strange part of New York.
He had lost seventy years.
Seventy years of his life had passed while he remained beneath the ice.
Steve slowly walked toward one of the chairs near the wall and sat down.
His hands rested on his knees as he stared at the floor.
For the first time since waking up, the weight of what had happened truly settled on him.
Everyone he knew was gone.
His friends, His comrades.
The people he had fought beside.
The world he had promised to protect and the promised dance with Peggy.
Peter and Ned exchanged an uncomfortable glance.
Neither of them knew what to say.
Raja watched Steve quietly.
The man who had fought armies, faced the Red Skull and thrown himself into the ocean without hesitation was now sitting in a Lego store,
Trying to process the fact that the entire life he remembered belonged to a world that had disappeared seventy years ago.
Raja finally pulled a chair over and sat beside him.
Steve didn’t look up.
“Seventy years…”
His voice was quiet.
Raja nodded.
“Yeah.”
Steve swallowed hard.
“What happened to everyone?”
Raja didn’t immediately answer.
There was no point pretending everything would be fine.
“They’re gone, Steve.
Except few who might still be alive but too old…”
The quiet moment didn’t last very long.
Raja’s phone suddenly started ringing.
He pulled it out of his pocket and glanced at the screen.
The name displayed there made him sigh.
Tony Stark.
Peter and Ned, who were still standing near the Lego display, immediately looked over.
Raja answered the call.
Tony’s face appeared on the screen almost immediately, and the first thing he said was,
“Please tell me you’re actually standing next to Captain America right now.”
Raja looked at Steve.
Then back at the phone.
“How did you even know?”
Tony gave him a look.
“Raj, you really think I wouldn’t notice when Captain America suddenly escapes from one of my friends’ carefully planned recovery arrangements and starts wandering around New York?
JARVIS has eyes practically everywhere.”
Raja turned the phone toward Steve.
“Say hello.”
Steve looked at the screen.
Tony looked back at him.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Then Tony smiled looking at Steve.
“Well, I’ll be damned.
It really is you.”
Steve stared at the unfamiliar man on the screen.
“Who are you?”
Tony placed a hand against his chest.
“Tony Stark.”
Steve’s expression changed slightly.
He knew that name.
Not the man himself, obviously, but the Stark family name.
Howard Stark.
His old friend.
Steve looked at Tony more carefully.
“Howard Stark’s son?”
Tony’s smile widened.
“See?
We’re already getting along.”
Steve’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re nothing like him.”
Tony’s smile faded slightly.
“Yeah, I get that a lot.”
Raja looked between them and decided that leaving them alone for five minutes would probably result in an argument about Howard Stark.
Tony suddenly leaned closer toward the camera.
“Anyway, Raj, I need a favor.
Can you take the popsicle with you?”
Steve frowned hearing the word he felt somewhat insulting.
“Popsicle?”
Tony pointed toward him.
“Yeah.
Him.”
Steve’s expression hardened.
Raja immediately knew Tony was enjoying himself.
“Captain America seems to be awaken not long ago, Tony.”
“Exactly.
Which means he’s currently confused, angry, probably looking for answers and, judging by his expression, seriously considering punching me through the phone.”
Steve’s eyes narrowed further.
“I don’t know you.”
Tony smiled hearing how Steve defends himself.
“That’s probably for the best.”
Raja shook his head.
“You could try being slightly less annoying.”
Tony paused.
“But where’s the fun in that?”
Steve looked at Raja.
“Who exactly is this man?
Is he really Howard’s son.”
Tony answered before Raja could.
“I’m the guy trying to stop you from wandering into something you don’t understand.”
Steve’s expression didn’t change.
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Tony sighed rubbing his forehead.
“Fine.
Let’s put it this way.
Nick Fury is going to want to talk to you.”
Steve immediately became suspicious.
“Who?”
Tony looked at Raja.
“See?
This is why I called you.”
Raja laughed looking at the impatience look on Tony’s face.
Tony continued,
“Nick Fury.
Big guy.
One eye.
Very dramatic.
Runs a secret organization, keeps classified files on everyone and generally behaves like he’s planning something even when he’s ordering lunch.”
Steve’s expression became increasingly skeptical.
Tony wasn’t finished.
“He’ll probably tell you he’s here to protect you, the country and possibly the entire planet.
Then he’ll conveniently forget to mention the part where he has people following everyone who might become useful to him.”
Steve looked at Raja.
“That doesn’t sound reassuring.”
Raja tried not to laugh.
Tony had managed to describe Nick Fury in such a way that Steve probably thought he had just escaped one secret organization and walked directly into another.
“He’s going to be fine.”
Steve looked at the phone again.
“You know this Fury?”
Raja rubbed his forehead.
“Okay, I’m taking Steve with me.”
Tony nodded his head hearing him.
“Good.
Bring him over.”
Raja stared at him.
“To the tower?”
The call ended without an answer.
Raja lowered his phone.
There was complete silence for about three seconds.
Then Ned pointed at him.
“Was that Tony Stark?”
Raja looked at him.
“Yes.
It was him he was the one who was sponsoring my internship…”
Peter’s eyes widened.
“You just had a video call with Tony Stark?”
“Yeah.”
Ned looked at Steve, then Raja, then back at Steve.
“Wait.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Why does Tony Stark know you?”
Peter’s expression changed too.
Well telling he would explain other time Raja took Steve out of the shop.
The moment Raja and Steve stepped out of the store, they barely made it a few steps down the pavement before several black SUVs came around the corner and pulled up along the curb one after another.
The sudden arrival immediately caught the attention of everyone nearby, and the doors opened almost simultaneously as armed S.H.I.E.L.D.
agents stepped out, spreading themselves across the street while keeping their attention firmly on Steve.
Raja stopped walking.
Steve looked around at the agents and immediately recognized the posture.
These weren’t ordinary police officers.
They were organized, armed and clearly there because of him.
One of the SUVs opened and Nick Fury stepped out, followed closely by Phil Coulson and Maria Hill.
Fury’s single eye immediately settled on Steve, then shifted toward the teenager standing beside him.
For a moment, Fury simply stared.
Coulson, on the other hand, looked as though Christmas had arrived several months early.
“Captain Rogers,”
Coulson said, unable to completely hide his excitement.
Steve looked at him cautiously. Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.
“You know me?”
Coulson smiled.
“Sir, I’ve been waiting a very long time to say that.”
Fury gave Coulson a sideways glance.
“Later.”
He then looked directly at Steve.
“Captain Rogers, I’m Director Nick Fury.
I believe we’ve got a lot to talk about.”
Steve didn’t answer immediately.
Before he could, one of the agents stepped forward.
He reached into his jacket and produced an identification card.
“Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Everyone in this area needs to clear out.
This is an active federal operation.”
Raja looked at the badge.
Then at the man holding it.
Then back at the badge.
The agent pointed toward the nearby pedestrians.
“Sir, please evacuate the area.”
Raja nodded slowly.
“Sure.”
He slipped one hand into his pocket.
That single movement immediately changed the atmosphere.
Several S.H.I.E.L.D.
agents raised their weapons slightly.
Steve noticed it.
Raja noticed it too but he didn’t stop.
He slowly pulled his hand out.
Instead of a weapon, he was holding his phone.
“Relax.”
He unlocked the screen and selected a contact.
Tony Stark.
The call connected almost instantly.
Tony’s face appeared on the screen.
“Raj, what’s up?”
Raja turned the phone around so the camera faced Fury.
Tony’s expression changed the moment he saw the man standing in front of him.
“Well, well, well.”
Fury closed his eye for a second.
He already knew this was going to be annoying.
“Tony.”
Tony smiled looking at Nick Fury before him.
“Nick.”
Fury rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“What are you planning?”
Tony looked genuinely confused.
“Planning?”
“Don’t play games with me.”
Tony leaned back in his chair.
“I’ve decided to invite an old friend of my father’s over for a little catch-up.”
Fury stared at him.
“He’s not an old friend of yours.”
“Technically, no.”
Tony glanced toward Steve through the phone.
“But he was my father’s friend.”
Steve looked at the screen.
“You’re really Howard’s son.”
Tony’s smile twitched hearing it.
“Yeah.
You have won the lottery captain.”
Raja shook his head.
Fury looked increasingly irritated.
“Tony, Steve Rogers is a S.H.I.E.L.D.
matter.”
Tony raised an eyebrow.
“Really?
Because last time I checked, Captain America wasn’t property of the federal government.”
Maria Hill stepped forward.
“Stark, this isn’t your jurisdiction.”
Tony looked at her through the phone.
“Maria, I’m hurt.
We have met only once but at least show a friendly smile when speaking to me…
Will ya…”
Maria’s expression remained completely flat.
Raja had to suppress a laugh.
Steve looked at Fury.
Then at Coulson.
Then at the agents surrounding them.
He still wasn’t entirely comfortable with the situation.
Tony spoke again.
“Actually, Fury, why don’t you come along too?”
Fury’s eyebrow rose.
“Why?”
“Because if we’re going to introduce Steve to the modern world, I’d rather have the people involved in this little operation sitting in the same room.”
Fury stared at the phone.
Raja could almost see the calculations happening behind his single eye.
Tony continued before Fury could answer.
“And besides, you already have the dramatic entrance covered.
SUVs, armed agents, fake FBI credentials and everything.
Very subtle.”
The agent holding the FBI badge immediately stiffened.
Fury’s eye moved toward him.
The agent slowly lowered the badge.
Raja looked between Fury and Tony.
“Are we going to Stark Tower?”
Who nodded his head giving the answer.
The ride to Stark Tower was surprisingly quiet considering the number of people packed into the convoy.
Raja sat in one of the SUVs with Steve, while Fury was in the vehicle ahead of them, accompanied by Coulson and Maria Hill.
The S.H.I.E.L.D.
agents around them remained alert, although nobody seemed particularly interested in starting another confrontation after Tony had made it clear that Steve was effectively being invited to Stark Tower.
Steve spent most of the journey looking through the window.
New York continued to surprise him.
Every few seconds there was something else that reminded him just how much time he had lost.
He occasionally asked Raja about something he saw, and Raja did his best to explain without overwhelming him.
By the time the convoy finally reached Stark Tower, Steve seemed slightly less overwhelmed than before.
The SUVs pulled into the secured entrance, and everyone stepped out.
Tony was already waiting inside the entrance with Pepper, his usual expression suggesting that he had been entertained by the entire situation rather than concerned by it.
Raja looked at Steve.
“Well, I guess this is where I leave you.”
Steve looked at him.
“You’re not staying?”
“I’ve got school.”
Steve stared at him.
“School?”
Raja nodded his head.
“Yeah.
Monday through Friday, unfortunately.”
Steve gave a small smile.
“I suppose some things haven’t changed.”
“Definitely not.”
Raja reached into his pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper.
He quickly wrote something on it before folding it and handing it to Steve.
“My number.”
Steve unfolded the paper and looked at it.
“If you need anything, call me.
Seriously.
Doesn’t matter what it is.”
Steve looked back at him.
“You sure?”
“Yeah.
You’ve been dropped into a world seventy years ahead of what you know.
If you need someone to explain something, or if Fury starts talking in riddles and you have no idea what he’s saying, give me a call.”
Steve chuckled hearing him.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Raja started walking backward toward the exit.
“And don’t let Stark annoy you too much.”
Tony, who was only a few feet away, immediately looked over.
“I heard that young man.”
Steve laughed quietly.
Then Raja turned and headed toward the exit, leaving Steve standing there with the small piece of paper in his hand.
Steve looked down at the number once more before carefully folding it and putting it into his pocket.
He had known Raja for barely an hour.
Yet somehow, the teenager was the first person in this strange new world who had treated him like Steve Rogers rather than a historical artifact.
