At that moment, the sound of footsteps echoed from outside the door.
Feng Tingshen was back.
“Daddy!”
“Mm.”
Feng Tingshen walked in and headed toward the bed.
Seeing this, Rong Ci wanted to put Feng Jingxin down to make room for him.
But the little girl refused to leave.
Leaning against her mother’s chest, she reached her arms out toward Feng Tingshen.
Feng Tingshen stepped closer and lifted Feng Jingxin into his arms.
He held his daughter closely.
Rong Ci could smell the familiar masculine cologne on him.
Yet, mingled with that familiar scent was a faint, delicate feminine perfume.
It was the exact same fragrance she had just smelled on Lin Wu at tonight’s banquet.
Rong Ci turned her face away and stood up, putting distance between herself and Feng Tingshen until she could no longer catch that scent.
With his exquisitely watch-adorned hand, Feng Tingshen gently rested it against Feng Jingxin’s fair forehead.
Then he looked at Rong Ci.
“What’s her temperature now?
Has it gone down a little?”
Rong Ci simply repeated the doctor’s words.
“It has dropped from a high fever to a low-grade one, but it’s still unstable.
She might spike a fever again.”
“Mm.”
Feng Tingshen sat on the edge of the bed with Feng Jingxin in his arms.
The little girl lingered against his chest, unwilling to get down, but she furrowed her brows.
“Daddy, your jacket is too stiff…”
Feng Tingshen took off his jacket and handed it to her.
Rong Ci caught it out of sheer reflex and held it against her chest.
Only when she distinctly smelled the two intertwined fragrances on the fabric did she suddenly remember that she and Feng Tingshen were on the verge of divorce.
In the past, she would have thought that holding his jacket against her chest was a kind of happiness—a happiness so precious that she would be reluctant to let it go.
But now, she casually tossed the jacket aside and said to Feng Jingxin, “I’ll go downstairs to cook some porridge.”
With both Feng Tingshen and Rong Ci at home, Feng Jingxin’s spirits lifted considerably.
Hearing her mother’s words, she nodded obediently.
“Mhm, thank you, Mommy.”
Rong Ci smiled faintly, turned around, and left the bedroom.
Watching her retreating figure, Feng Tingshen’s gaze fell upon the suit jacket she had left draped over the back of a chair.
After putting the porridge on the stove, Rong Ci began preparing the other ingredients.
By the time she washed her hands and stepped out of the kitchen, twenty minutes had passed.
Rong Ci hesitated for a moment before heading upstairs.
Upon reaching the second floor and turning the corner, she saw Feng Tingshen standing by the window at the end of the hallway, talking on the phone.
Don’t worry.”
Was he talking to Lin Wu?
Would Lin Wu actually worry about Feng Jingxin?
Rong Ci withdrew her gaze and entered Feng Jingxin’s room.
The little girl had already fallen asleep after finishing her IV drip.
She had sweated profusely, and Auntie Liu was carefully wiping her down.
Seeing Rong Ci, Auntie Liu hurriedly gave up her spot and handed her the towel, assuming Rong Ci wanted to personally tend to her daughter.
After all, Rong Ci had always done things herself in the past when it came to matters concerning Feng Jingxin and Feng Tingshen.Rong Ci shook her head.
Auntie Liu was momentarily stunned but didn’t overthink it.
She quietly and gently changed Feng Jingxin into dry clothes.
Rong Ci sat on the sofa in the room.
Once Auntie Liu was finished, she asked, “Has the doctor left?”
“Yes.”
“What did the doctor say?
Will the fever return?”
She was considering whether she needed to stay overnight.
“The doctor said it probably won’t.”
“That’s good.”
Since Feng Jingxin was out of danger, there was a high probability she wouldn’t need to stay the night.
With porridge still simmering in the pot, Rong Ci sat for a while before heading downstairs.
Auntie Liu was in the kitchen and said, “I’ll watch the stove.
You’re tired too, Madam.
Please sit down and rest for a bit.”
When Rong Ci stepped out of the kitchen, she saw Feng Tingshen sitting on the living room sofa, reading a newspaper.Noticing her, Feng Tingshen glanced over before returning his attention to the paper.
Rong Ci’s footsteps paused.
In the past, she would have definitely sat down beside him, trying to spend more time with him without disturbing him.
But now…
they had nothing left to say to each other.
Thinking this, she turned around and went upstairs.
Feng Tingshen didn’t call out to stop her.Rong Ci felt a hint of confusion.
She had expected him to confront her over the way she and Yu Moxun had “bullied” Lin Wu.
Yet, he hadn’t said a single word…The moment Rong Ci went upstairs, Feng Jingxin woke up.
Looking pale and listless, she wandered out of the room to find her.
“Mommy, I’m hungry.
Is the porridge ready?”
“Almost done.”
Rong Ci asked Auntie Liu, “Is she still running a fever?”
Auntie Liu smiled.
“No, the fever is gone.”
Reassured, Rong Ci turned back into the kitchen.
Rong Ci ladled the porridge into a bowl.
Looking toward the doorway, she noticed that Feng Tingshen had followed her over.
“Mommy, why is there only one bowl?
Daddy is eating with us,” Feng Jingxin said.
Rong Ci hadn’t realized Feng Tingshen would be eating too.
Before she could speak, Auntie Liu smiled and said, “I’ll go get another bowl.”
Rong Ci didn’t plan to eat herself, but she was used to making extra.
Since Feng Jingxin didn’t eat much, there would be enough for both her and Feng Tingshen to have a few bites.
After serving the porridge, Rong Ci sat down and ate in silence.
Feng Tingshen had already taken off his watch.
His slender fingers held the spoon, stirring gently.
His elegant movements were incredibly pleasing to the eye.
After taking a sip, Feng Jingxin squinted her eyes in satisfaction.
“I haven’t had this in so long.
It smells so good.”
Auntie Liu chuckled.
“Now that you’re back in the country, you can eat it whenever you want.”
“Mhm!”
Hearing this, Rong Ci paused but said nothing.
Feng Tingshen, sitting across from her, remained silent as well.
Feng Jingxin, however, was in high spirits.
As if suddenly remembering something, she coaxed her mother, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?”
Rong Ci was about to refuse, but seeing her daughter’s face still pale and lacking color, she agreed.
“Alright.”
Feng Jingxin only ate one bowl, and Feng Tingshen didn’t eat much either.
The pot of porridge wasn’t finished when they left the dining room.
Feng Jingxin loved being clean; she insisted on taking a bath even when she had a cold.
Afraid she would catch a chill, Rong Ci had to go in and supervise her.
After Feng Jingxin finished her bath, Rong Ci hesitated before turning toward the master bedroom.
Feng Tingshen wasn’t there.
Rong Ci had assumed he would have had her belongings cleared out.
But upon entering, she found that the bedroom was exactly as she had left it.
Her daily essentials—slippers, hand cream, face cream, water cup—were all exactly where she remembered them, completely unchanged.
It was as if she had never left.Rong Ci walked into the walk-in closet and opened the sliding door, only to discover that her things hadn’t decreased either.
Perhaps because the divorce hadn’t been finalized and they couldn’t upset the matriarch, Feng Tingshen hadn’t had anyone touch her belongings.
Pushing those thoughts aside, she grabbed a set of pajamas and a towel, left the master bedroom, and headed to Feng Jingxin’s room.
Feng Jingxin was sitting on the bed playing with a tablet.
Seeing the clothes in her mother’s hand, she looked confused.
“Mommy, are you going to take a bath in my room?”
“Mhm,” Rong Ci replied.
Not long after she entered the bathroom, Feng Tingshen walked into Feng Jingxin’s room.
