Fu Haoyan slipped the bracelet into his pocket and gently carried Lei Shaoxin back to the bed.
The doctors and nurses were already waiting nearby. The bandage on her wrist had soaked through, faintly stained.
After being given a sedative, her emotions gradually calmed.
Her consciousness was hazy as she allowed the medical staff to tend to her.
By the time the curtain was drawn back, she had fallen asleep.
The chief doctor walked over to Fu Haoyan and said, “Her emotional state is very unstable. We recommend restraining her hands and feet for safety.”
Fu Haoyan couldn’t bear the thought and shook his head. “That won’t be necessary.”
Ah Feng escorted the medical staff out, leaving only Chen Jenny and Fu Haoyan in the room.
Chen Jenny, easily moved to tears and unable to do much to help, gave a few quiet words to Fu Haoyan before leaving as well.
Ah Feng returned shortly after and leaned in close, speaking in a low voice meant only for Fu Haoyan.
“It was Lei Zhiying who arranged for the red paint incident. The villa has already been cleaned up, and her home has been taken care of as well.”
A cold glint flashed in Fu Haoyan’s eyes. “Got it.”
Noticing his bloodshot eyes, Ah Feng said, “Brother Yan, maybe you should go get some rest. I can stay here.”
Fu Haoyan shook his head. “No. I’m afraid she’ll wake up and not find me.”
Nothing mattered more than her waking up safely.
He took the bracelet out of his pocket and handed it to Ah Feng. “Clean this.”
Ah Feng accepted it and left the room.
Fu Haoyan walked back to the bedside, gently brushing aside the hair on her forehead and placing a soft kiss there.
The warm glow of the setting sun filtered into the room, casting a quiet sense of peace.
He held her uninjured hand and sat beside her. After staying tense for nearly a full day and night, exhaustion finally caught up with him, and he drifted into a light sleep by her bedside.
It was already late at night when Lei Shaoxin woke again.
Her fingers moved slightly, and Fu Haoyan woke instantly, lifting his head.
After gathering himself, he gently stroked her hair. “Shaoxin, you’re awake.”
He stood and pressed the call button. The doctor came in to examine her—physically, she was stable, but her emotional state needed attention.
After giving instructions, the doctor left.
A bodyguard outside pushed in a cart with food. Fu Haoyan took a bowl of plain porridge, cooled it carefully, and fed her spoonful by spoonful.
Just then, the quiet was broken by a ringing phone.
Lei Shaoxin answered, but before she could speak, a harsh voice came through.
“Lei Shaoxin, you ungrateful child—how did all of Yingying’s shares end up with you—”
After everything she had just been through, the sudden outburst overwhelmed her.
Without saying a word, she threw the phone to the ground, the screen shattering on impact.
Fu Haoyan set the porridge aside and bent down to pick it up. He glanced at the screen—it showed “Dad.”
The call was still ongoing. He put it to his ear. The voice on the other end continued angrily.
Lei Shaoxin didn’t know what else was said, nor what Fu Haoyan heard. She only saw him frown slightly before ending the call.
He pulled her gently into his arms.
“Even if everything falls apart… I’ll be here to hold it together for you.”
Lei Shaoxin stayed in the hospital for more than half a month. Ah Feng kept watch every day.
Fu Haoyan was sometimes busy, but no matter how late he worked, he would always come. Sometimes she would already be asleep, but when she woke the next morning, she would find him still there, holding her hand, having fallen asleep beside the bed.
Hu Wenwen, who had gone abroad for a competition, called several times. Li Mingxian had followed her overseas and would sometimes grab the phone to chat as well, still calling her “little sister Shaoxin.”
Her days in the hospital were not entirely lonely.
Her wrist had healed enough for the stitches to be removed, and she was ready to be discharged.
Ah Feng packed the medicine into a bag.
Lei Shaoxin changed into a white dress, standing in front of the mirror as she adjusted her softly curled hair.
After finishing his call, Fu Haoyan walked back into the room and gently placed a watch onto Lei Shaoxin’s left wrist.
He raised his own wrist and gave a small wave in front of her. “Matching watches.”
He was as thoughtful as ever—using the watch to subtly cover the marks on her wrist.
Lei Shaoxin lowered her gaze to look at it. “Where’s my bracelet?”
Hearing that, Fu Haoyan took it out from his pocket.
Ah Feng had already cleaned it thoroughly—it looked as good as new.
Fu Haoyan carefully placed the bracelet back onto her wrist. Worn together with the watch, the two looked perfectly matched.
When they returned to Jialishan Villa, Ah Feng didn’t get out of the car—he simply drove away.
Lei Shaoxin didn’t ask why Fu Haoyan hadn’t taken her back to Repulse Bay. Perhaps, deep down, she didn’t want to return there yet.
Fu Haoyan also avoided bringing her back to the original bedroom, worried it might remind her of that night.
Instead, he led her to a guest room on the first floor. Though called a guest room, it was almost as spacious as the master bedroom.
Leaning against the doorframe, he watched her quietly.
Lei Shaoxin took the bag from him and walked into the walk-in closet. Inside, the walls were lined with clothes, shoes, and bags.
Fu Haoyan had already arranged for the latest seasonal collections to be delivered.
Skincare and cosmetics had also been prepared in advance.
After looking around the room with quiet approval, she placed her medication in a drawer and stepped out.
Fu Haoyan followed her into the kitchen, planning to make something simple to eat.
From behind, he wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his head against her neck like a clingy puppy. “There’s nothing at home, so I ordered food. It should be here soon.”
His hair brushing against her made her feel ticklish, and she was just about to push him away—
When the sound of a ringing phone interrupted them.
Fu Haoyan glanced at the caller ID—it was A-Le. He loosened his hold on her.
“I need to take this,” he said, walking toward the study.
Inside, his expression turned serious as he answered the call.
A-Le said, “Brother Yan, I found some photos from the police. I’ve sent them to your phone. Things are harder to handle in Vigeland compared to Hong Kong, so it may take more time, but I’ll keep digging.”
“Thanks for your hard work,” Fu Haoyan replied.
There was a brief pause on the other end. A-Le had heard about Lei Shaoxin from Ah Feng and hesitated, unsure how to ask—but the words came out anyway.
“Brother Yan… is Miss Lei okay?”
“She’s fine. She’s been discharged.”
After ending the call, Fu Haoyan’s expression darkened as he began scrolling through the photos on his phone.
Only then did he realize—
The red paint at her doorstep had triggered memories of her mother’s death, which led to her emotional collapse that night.
He had thought it was simply because her condition had worsened after stopping treatment. Now he finally understood the deeper cause.
As he continued scrolling, the photos showed scenes from years ago.
Then, one image made his fingers pause.
He zoomed in and studied it carefully.
That bracelet—
It had belonged to her mother and was worn during that tragic incident years ago.
Seeing it again, stained and tied to painful memories, had triggered her overwhelming reaction.
He hadn’t realized how much she had gone through over the past two years—how much she had endured alone.
Her broken, fragile state… he felt he needed to be the one to help her heal, to pull her back from the darkness.
Fu Haoyan set his phone down, picked up a cigar, lit it, and took a deep breath before slowly exhaling.
If not for his father’s accident back then, he might have returned to Vigeland earlier and stayed by her side.
Would she have turned out differently if he had been there?
