December 24th, Christmas Eve. Heavy snow was falling.
In the emergency room of the city center hospital.
When Jiang Wan woke up, she was covered in blood and being pushed into the operating room, her mouth filled with the taste of the child in her womb.
Looking at the doctor wearing a blue mask, she tightly grasped the doctor’s hand, her voice weak.
“The baby…”
“Please, you must save my baby.”
The doctor looked troubled and whispered in her ear, “Madam, we’ve already tried contacting your husband, but his phone has been unanswered.”
Jiang Wan seemed not to believe it and asked the doctor for a phone.
With bloodstained hands, she mustered her last bit of strength to dial Sheng Lianjue’s number.
The busy tone rang for what felt like an eternity before the call was finally answered. Suppressing the pain, she spoke urgently:
“Sheng Lianjue, can you not—”
But before she could finish, a cold, sharp reprimand came from the other end of the line.
The man’s voice was thick with impatience and indifference: “Jiang Wan, how long are you going to keep this up this time? I’m on a business trip. Can’t you be a little more sensible?”
Jiang Wan bit her lip hard, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. “But it hurts so much, Sheng Lianjue. Can you come back…”
The man had already lost his patience and interrupted her again. “Whatever it is, we’ll talk when I get back. I’m hanging up. I’m busy.” But the call didn’t end.
Then, a soft, delicate voice came through—
“Lian Jue, is that Xiao Wan calling?”
“What’s the matter?”
“I’ve put your bath towel and towel on the bed. Oh, your phone! Lian Jue, Xiao Wan might misunderstand. Should I call her and explain?”
“What’s there to explain?”
Immediately after, the call was disconnected.
Listening to the dial tone, Jiang Wan felt her heart ache as if pierced by needles, little by little.
No need to explain—because they were already together, weren’t they?
If not for her call, they would probably have already been in bed.
But why did it have to be today?
Today was her and Sheng Lianjue’s third wedding anniversary!
He had promised to take her to Xishuangbanna for New Year’s this time, but when it was time to leave, he took Jiang Lan instead, claiming she was too much trouble. She had begged him, assuring Sheng Lianjue repeatedly that she would entertain herself and not bother him, but he still didn’t choose her.
And then, overwhelmed with grief, she fell down the stairs and called an ambulance to save herself, only to get into a car accident on the way.
A tear rolled from the corner of Jiang Wan’s eye, disappearing into her hair. Her heart ached with a dense, piercing pain.
She never imagined that after three years of companionship, she had become nothing but trouble.
Just then, the heart monitor emitted a sharp, piercing sound.
“Oh no, Dr. Xu, the patient is going into shock!”
“The patient’s uterus is hemorrhaging heavily. We can’t stop the bleeding!”
“Proceed with surgery immediately.”
…
By the time Jiang Wan woke up, more than half a month had passed.
A nurse was just hanging an IV drip for her. “Miss, you’re finally awake!”
Jiang Wan’s voice was low and hoarse. “Am I in the hospital?”
“Yes, you’re very lucky to have survived. You just woke up, so don’t move around yet. But… we still haven’t been able to reach your family.”
Jiang Wan anxiously touched her abdomen. “The… the baby… where’s my baby?”The nurse quickly reassured her, “Please don’t panic, you must keep your emotions steady. Dr. Xu truly did his utmost to pull you back from the brink of death. As for the child… I’m sorry… you can always have another…”
“Please accept our condolences.”
The nurse couldn’t bear to tell her that the chain collision had claimed many lives.
One of the nurses from the ambulance that brought her to the hospital had died in that accident.
Jiang Wan was one of the few survivors.
Jiang Wan’s eyes were hollow, tears silently streaming down her face.
She felt as if her heart were being violently wrenched.
It was as though countless sharp blades were slicing through her heart.
The pain was suffocating, leaving her breathless.
If only Sheng Lianjue had turned to look at her before leaving that day, perhaps the accident wouldn’t have happened, and she wouldn’t have lost the child.
Then, her baby wouldn’t have left her.
Tears slid from the corners of her eyes, disappearing into her dark hair…
Over the past three years, she had thought countless times about divorcing Sheng Lianjue, until this child unexpectedly arrived, giving her boundless hope.
But now…
The only bond between her and Sheng Lianjue had vanished.
Her baby was gone!
In the half month she had been hospitalized, the Sheng family remained unaware of her accident.
Perhaps even if she died, no one would know.
If that were the case, what was the point of continuing this marriage?
All of this should have ended long ago!
