“Whether it’s suitable or not isn’t for you to decide.”
“If you dare take one step out of here tonight, your brother will be in prison tomorrow!”
Jiang Wan quickly turned around, her eyes filled with tears shimmering with hatred as she looked at him. “Sheng Lianjue, don’t go too far!”
Sheng Lianjue threw off the covers and got out of bed, walking over to her. His tall frame enveloped her in a chilling aura. Under his shadow, he gazed down at her, his oppressive presence making her feel a cold, ruthless dread. “The Sheng family isn’t a place where you can come and go as you please.”
“If you want a divorce, it’ll only happen when I say so!”
“Go stand outside the door. Come back in only when you realize your mistake.”
“Sheng Lianjue, stop treating me like a three-year-old child.”
In the past, whenever she made a mistake, Sheng Lianjue would punish her by making her stand like this.
But now, things were different between them.
Her heart had already died along with that child.
When she was on the verge of death in the hospital, he was with Jiang Lan.
If only he had turned back to care about her that day—no, even just glanced at her—she wouldn’t have gotten into that car accident.
Their child wouldn’t have died, and they wouldn’t have ended up in this situation.
But then again, it had always been her own wishful thinking.
After all, Sheng Lianjue had never intended to have a child.
She didn’t know whether Sheng Lianjue simply didn’t want children at all, or if he just didn’t want children with her!
In truth, the cracks in their relationship had appeared long ago.
Before, she had tried everything to mend them, but with the death of their child, she gave up, and the threads holding them together snapped completely.
“Then go kneel!”
“The divorce was personally approved by Old Madam Sheng. Sheng Lianjue, there’s nothing left between us now. If you refuse to let my brother go, I’ll go to Old Madam Sheng and ask her to stand up for me.”
“As long as I haven’t signed, you’re still Mrs. Sheng.” Sheng Lianjue’s eyes darkened as he pinched her chin.
Involving her brother, Jiang Wan had no choice but to compromise for now.
Following Sheng Lianjue’s orders, she knelt at the entrance of the hospital’s inpatient building.
Passing family members all cast strange glances her way.
When Sheng Lianjue was in a good mood, he could give you all his tenderness, even plucking the moon from the sky to place it before you.
But if something angered him, it was nothing short of the end of the world.
Just like her current predicament.
‘Boom—’
A clap of thunder suddenly echoed across the sky, accompanied by a flash of purple lightning tearing through the night.
A nurse approached, trying to help her up.
“Don’t worry about me, thank you.” Her voice was faint.
Until a cold drop of water landed between her eyebrows, chilling her to the bone.
Jiang Wan looked up at the starless sky, and suddenly countless raindrops began to pour down.
A torrential rain began to fall.
Within a minute, Jiang Wan was soaked through.
Her injuries hadn’t fully healed, and as she endured the icy rain, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen. The pain spread throughout her entire body, and she hugged herself, trembling. Besides the pain in her abdomen, every joint in her body felt as if it were being torn apart.
Unable to bear it, Jiang Wan’s body weakened from the pain, and she collapsed to the ground. Clinging to her last shred of consciousness, she forced herself to sit up.
Hugging her arms, she shivered from the cold, but none of it compared to the chill in her heart.
Lowering her gaze, a pair of pitch-black shoes entered her line of sight. It was Jiang Lan.
The rain pattered against the black umbrella.
Jiang Wan was splattered all over.
Jiang Lan looked down at Jiang Wan kneeling on the ground, her eyes filled with undisguised contempt. “You’ve shown some self-awareness by agreeing to the divorce. Don’t worry, after tomorrow, once Lian Jue’s anger subsides, you might be fine.”
Jiang Wan didn’t hear a word Jiang Lan was saying. Every part of her body ached, and her consciousness was hazy.
She didn’t know how much longer she could hold on.
Jiang Lan took the elevator upstairs, patted the water droplets off her clothes, and then entered the hospital room.
The temperature difference between inside and outside was stark.
Jiang Lan looked at the man standing by the floor-to-ceiling window.
Dressed in blue-and-white striped hospital clothes, he was tall and imposing. Even from behind, he exuded an overwhelming sense of security.
“She still refuses to admit her mistake?” His voice was low and icy.
Sheng Lianjue’s face was dark, his sharp gaze fixed on the tiny figure below, like an ant. An inexplicable emotion stirred within him.
He couldn’t quite name it, but at this moment, he was angry.
And somewhat surprised by her.
She knew full well that defying him would bring her no benefit. What drove her to go to such lengths, even opposing him, just to get a divorce?
When had the Sheng family ever mistreated her?
