The doctor didn’t dare ask the specific reasons. No one could guess or understand Mo Yuncheng’s thoughts, and no one dared to speculate blindly; regardless of whether one was right or wrong, the resulting outcome would never be good.
The doctor was simply curious and asked in passing. If Bai Nanxing was willing to speak, that would be for the best; if not, the doctor lost nothing. Mo Yuncheng hadn’t strictly ordered him to get an answer from Bai Nanxing’s mouth.
“Is it that you don’t want to tell me, or do you just not want to speak at all?”
Before Bai Nanxing could respond, the doctor read the answer from his face. He didn’t continue using Mo Yuncheng’s name to pressure him for a reply. Instead, seeing that the glucose IV was nearly finished, he helped pull the needle from the back of Bai Nanxing’s hand. “Rest well in the room first. The Old Master said he would have someone send you back in a while.”
Bai Nanxing followed his lead and asked, “Isn’t Chen Kui sending me back?”
The doctor replied while packing his things, “I’m not clear on those kinds of matters. All arrangements are up to the Old Master. If you have questions, you can ask him face-to-face; I am just a private doctor hired by the Mo family.”
Fair enough.
Bai Nanxing didn’t ask further. Once the doctor left, he sat up from the bed.
Having received the glucose, the intense dizziness in his head had finally faded. Bai Nanxing touched his cheek, which was still burning with pain, and a flash of unidentifiable emotion crossed his eyes.
About half an hour later, the butler arrived.
Bai Nanxing was no longer in the guest room. He felt the room was a bit stuffy—perhaps it was the air—and felt that breathing outside would help him stay more clear-headed.
Seeing the butler approach, Bai Nanxing greeted him politely and aloud, “Hello, Butler.”
The butler nodded back courteously. “The Master sent me to ask if Master Nanxing’s body feels any better.”
Bai Nanxing could barely hold himself up. It was true that his stomach wanted food, but he seemed to have no appetite at the Mo residence; he decided to endure it and eat after returning to school. “I’m fine now.”
“That is good.” The butler’s gaze then fell upon Bai Nanxing’s reddened face. Finding it strange, he pointed to his own face and asked, “Master Nanxing, what happened to your face?”
If an ordinary person took a slap, the swelling would usually go down after so many hours. However, due to Bai Nanxing’s physical constitution, it wouldn’t fade anytime soon. If possible, he didn’t want to go around with this half-red, half-white face; it looked incredibly foolish.
Seeing that Bai Nanxing didn’t answer, the butler stopped asking. After making a mental note of it, he said, “Since Master Nanxing’s health is no longer a concern, the Master wants you to head over now. He has already prepared a car to take you back.”
“Back to school?”
“Wherever Master Nanxing wishes to go.”
Bai Nanxing checked his phone; it was already past five in the evening.
He hadn’t participated in anything today; he was just there to make up the numbers. He didn’t know what Mo Yuncheng meant by having him come over only to say nothing at all. As expected, his thoughts were difficult to guess.
“Let’s go, Butler.”
The butler looked thoughtful, but in the end, he said nothing. “Follow me.”
At this moment—
Everyone who had come to the old mansion was gathered at the entrance. Various luxury cars were parked outside, almost all of them the latest models from this year’s exhibitions.
Bai Nanxing hadn’t even seen many of them before. He dreamed of owning a luxury car of his own, but that dream was likely unattainable—unless he truly “flew onto a branch and became a phoenix,” not needing to spend his own money.
As for the probability of that happening, Bai Nanxing would sooner believe he could win a million in the lottery.
“Little Sister-in-law!”
Mo Qingqing saw him from a distance and ran up to greet him. “Big Brother and Third Brother said you weren’t feeling well and were resting in the guest room. I wanted to ask you to eat with us, but Third Brother said you fainted and told me not to disturb you, so I didn’t go. Little Sister-in-law, are you okay now? Why did you suddenly faint?”
Bai Nanxing couldn’t be bothered to explain much. He didn’t quite understand why Mo Qingqing was so enthusiastic toward him. This should be their first meeting. He was supposed to marry into the Mo family in the future, but that was a future matter.
Out of politeness, Bai Nanxing answered anyway, “Just a bit of low blood sugar, it’s nothing serious.”
Mo Qingqing stared at his face for a moment and noticed the obvious red marks. Although it was no longer swollen, the marks were distinct and hard to miss.
“Little Sister-in-law, your cheek over here… it’s so red…”
Mo Qingqing spoke quite loudly. Bai Ruoning, standing nearby, heard everything. Perhaps because of Mo Leyang’s earlier attitude, Bai Ruoning feared Mo Qingqing would react similarly, and her footsteps kept shifting behind Bai Yi.
At the same time, she didn’t forget to glare at Bai Nanxing with her eyes, seemingly warning him not to speak recklessly.
Bai Nanxing acted as if he hadn’t seen it, but he didn’t mention it to Mo Qingqing. Getting slapped by Bai Ruoning was embarrassing enough; if he had to rely on someone else to stand up for him, he wouldn’t be able to show his face at all.
Just as he was about to explain, Mo Yichen walked over.
He wasn’t sure if Mo Yuncheng had said something to him, but Mo Yichen’s expression toward him wasn’t very good. Bai Nanxing subconsciously looked away.
“Eldest Master,” he called out softly.
His voice trembled slightly. Mo Qingqing seemed to guess something and unexpectedly stood in front of Bai Nanxing, shielding him. “Brother, what’s wrong with you today? Why is your face so sour?”
Seeing that Mo Qingqing had no intention of moving, Mo Yichen pulled back his emotions. “It’s nothing.”
Mo Qingqing said, “Nothing? Your expression doesn’t look like ‘nothing’ to me. Are you trying to bully Little Sister-in-law? He hasn’t even married into the family yet; don’t go too far.”
“Qingqing!”
“What, you’re going to scold me now?!”
There were many people present. Mo Yichen likely felt it was inappropriate to reprimand her there, so he turned and walked to the other side.
Bai Nanxing didn’t understand what was happening, but he could see there was some friction between the two siblings, even if neither of them brought it to the surface.
This made Bai Nanxing curious, and he couldn’t help asking, “Qingqing, did you and the Eldest Master… have a falling out?”
A flash of panic crossed Mo Qingqing’s face, and her eyes became evasive as if she had done something to wrong him.
Bai Nanxing suddenly thought of what Mo Leyang had told him in the guest room. Was it because Mo Yichen already had someone, he liked but hadn’t broken up with yet, and Mo Qingqing knew about it? Did she feel that Mo Yichen was betraying him, which was why she was being so nice to him?
If that was the case, then he understood.
“Qingqing, does this have something to do with me?” Bai Nanxing asked tentatively.
Mo Qingqing immediately fell into silence, stammering without being able to complete a sentence.
Bai Nanxing didn’t press her, but her reaction left no room for doubt. Just as Mo Leyang had said, he was the “third party” intruding.
What a ridiculous relationship.
“So, the reason you’re good to me—is it because of this?”
As if her heart’s secret had been pierced, Mo Qingqing froze for a moment, looking down without a word.
Bai Nanxing became even more certain.
Indeed, there was no such thing as kindness without reason in this world. If there was, it was surely because the other party felt they owed you something.
He didn’t need Mo Qingqing to treat him this way. This was a matter between him and Mo Yichen. Even if someone should feel guilty, that person should be Mo Yichen.
However, he wouldn’t explicitly say this to Mo Qingqing. Regardless of the circumstances, the Mo family wouldn’t truly consider him one of their own. Things might look one way on the surface, but who could know what was happening behind the scenes?
Having thought this through, Bai Nanxing didn’t say anything more to Mo Qingqing. He only wanted to return to school early. The glucose solution could relieve his low blood sugar, but it couldn’t fill his stomach. He really wanted to get back to his dorm and have a proper meal.
Looking up, Bai Nanxing saw another face that was exceptionally familiar to him.
That person was none other than the classmate who had brought him the message the night before.
It was Zhou Lin.
And seeing the way he was laughing and talking with Mo Leyang, their relationship was clearly not simple.
Bai Nanxing asked Mo Qingqing, “May I ask you a question, Fifth Miss?”
This form of address instantly made things more distant. Mo Qingqing hesitated to speak but couldn’t blame Bai Nanxing. She pursed her lips for a while before forcing a smile. “What do you want to ask, Little Sister-in-law?”
Bai Nanxing pointed his gaze toward Zhou Lin and asked, “Who is he?”
Mo Qingqing followed Bai Nanxing’s gaze to Zhou Lin and introduced him: “That’s Brother Zhou Lin, Third Brother’s best friend. They went abroad to study together when they were kids and just came back a few days ago. Do you know Brother Zhou Lin, Little Sister-in-law?”
Know him? If it weren’t for Zhou Lin, he wouldn’t have had to go to the rooftop to catch a cold in the freezing wind.
“I wouldn’t say I ‘know’ him,” Bai Nanxing explained. “He’s a senior at my school; we’ve met once.”
Mo Qingqing then remembered that the school Mo Leyang had transferred to was C University, and Bai Nanxing was also a student there. “In that case, did you also see Third Brother at school? I remember Third Brother came back first, and Brother Zhou Lin came back half a day later. If you’ve seen Brother Zhou Lin, you must have seen Third Brother.”
“I…” Bai Nanxing suddenly felt a bit foolish for letting the cat out of the bag so easily. “Uh… yeah.”
Mo Qingqing said, “Then when you met earlier, why did it feel like you didn’t recognize him? That shouldn’t be right. Third Brother is very handsome and he’s mixed-race; his eyes are the easiest thing to recognize. You shouldn’t have failed to recognize him, Little Sister-in-law.”
Bai Nanxing didn’t know how to fix this lie. He certainly knew Mo Leyang—they had met more than once. Or rather, they weren’t strangers at all. Given what Mo Leyang had done to him, how could he not recognize him at a glance?
Even Mo Qingqing could figure this out. If it were Mo Yichen, it would be even more obvious.
Bai Nanxing was suddenly grateful that the person talking to him was Mo Qingqing and not Mo Yichen. Otherwise, given the relationship between Mo Yichen and Mo Leyang, he would surely be torn apart.
“I… I just didn’t react in time.”
Mo Qingqing was simple-minded and didn’t think too much. When Bai Nanxing said he hadn’t reacted, she believed him without any suspicion. “No wonder. But then again, Third Brother is mixed-race; most people wouldn’t expect him to be the Third Young Master of the Mo family.”
