Mira’s POV
His dismissal left me with a faint sense of loss.
I wasn’t foolish enough to think I could rely on a stranger.
But when he told my father, “From now on, Mira’s affairs are my concern,” his words had shaken me more than I wanted to admit.
How could I have forgotten?
He had only said it in the heat of the moment, trying to protect me.
In this world, I was on my own.
No one was going to look after me.
I managed a smile and nodded.
“Mr. Cale, thank you anyway. Goodbye.”
I left his hospital room with as much dignity as I could muster.
After leaving the hospital, I knew I couldn’t go back to Mooncrest Manor.
I’d stay at a hotel for a month while I figured out what to do next.
But when I tried to check in, the receptionist told me, “I’m sorry, ma’am, but this card has been declined.”
I tried another card.
Same result.
I hadn’t expected my father to go this far.
No matter how angry he had been, he’d never frozen my accounts before.
Now every card was useless, and I had only a few hundred dollars in cash.
I left the hotel and headed for the apartment I’d rented for Elias and me.
At least I’d have a roof over my head for now.
But first, I needed to get his family out.
When I opened the door, the stench of cigarette smoke and stale alcohol hit me immediately.
Makeshift bedding covered the living room floor, and the entire place was a mess.
Whenever Elias’s relatives came over, they took over the apartment and left it looking like a disaster.
His parents used to proudly claim that this was their son’s home, the place he’d bought for our future marriage.
I never corrected them back then.
I had even found their pride and vanity somewhat amusing.
Looking back now, I couldn’t understand what I’d ever found endearing about a family of greedy leeches.
They stood awkwardly when they saw me.
After what had happened with my father’s dogs, they were still wary of me.
Then Elias’s parents, Peter and Helen, came out of the bedroom.
The moment they saw me, they exchanged a knowing look, clearly assuming I’d come crawling back to apologize.
Helen scoffed.
“What?
Did you finally learn your lesson?
You come back empty-handed without even bothering to apologize?”
”That’s right!” Peter said arrogantly.
“An apology from you alone isn’t enough this time. Bring your father here! He was so arrogant the other day. If he wants our forgiveness, he’d better show some sincerity. Otherwise, don’t even think about coming through our door again!”
I looked at their smug faces and let out a cold laugh.
“Your door? Which door are you talking about? This is my apartment. You’re a bunch of parasites squatting in my home.”
Elias’s relatives exchanged uneasy glances.
“Peter, didn’t you say this apartment was bought for Elias? How is it Mira’s?”
The panic on Helen and Peter’s faces was obvious.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Helen snapped.
“Just because you say it’s yours doesn’t make it yours!
This is Elias’s home.
Get out!
Come back when you’ve learned some respect!”
”I don’t think you’re in any position to tell me to leave.”
I pulled out the lease and held it up.
“I paid for this apartment with my own money. Everything in it was bought by me. So you’re the ones who need to leave.”
Now that they no longer bothered pretending to respect me, Elias’s family dropped all pretense.
His parents planted themselves on the sofa, completely shameless.
“You belonged to our Elias the moment you started dating him!” Helen declared.
“What’s yours is ours!”
She turned to the relatives.
“Go ahead. Watch TV, play cards. Let’s see what this ill-mannered brat can actually do to us.”
They had nothing to lose.
The Elias family had no money, but they had plenty of relatives willing to gang up on me.
I was alone.
What could I do?
I watched them coldly, then pulled out my phone and dialed. Find the original chapter at g.com.
“Hello, Mooncrest Pack Enforcement? I’d like to report an unlawful occupation of my property. Please send someone over immediately.”
I calmly gave them the address.
Elias’s parents froze when they heard me call Pack Enforcement.
None of them dared cause any more trouble.
They had thought they could rely on Elias to keep living comfortably, but even Elias himself had been living off me.
Helen, humiliated and furious, suddenly lunged at me.
She snatched the phone from my hand, smashed it against the floor, then stomped on it repeatedly.
“You little bitch!
You dare call Enforcement?
I’ll make you call them!
Go ahead!
Call them!”
Peter snarled, “Elias spoiled you rotten.
How dare you disrespect your elders like this?
If we don’t teach you a lesson now, who knows what you’ll do next?
I’ll teach you some manners on Elias’s behalf!”
He raised his hand.
My eyes hardened.
“If you hit me, this won’t just be unlawful occupation anymore. You’ll be committing assault, and Pack Enforcement will detain you. Think carefully before you do it.”
Elias’s family might have been shameless, but they were afraid of Pack Enforcement.
And my call had already gone through.
Someone could arrive at any moment.
Peter reluctantly lowered his hand.
Before long, two Pack Enforcement officers arrived.
“Who made the call?”
”I did.”
I stepped forward and showed them the lease.
Peter immediately rushed to explain.
“Officers, this woman has no respect for her elders! She’s my son’s girlfriend, and this is my son’s home. We only brought some relatives over to visit for a few days. What’s wrong with that?”
I corrected him calmly.
“Get your facts straight. I’m your son’s ex-girlfriend. I rented this apartment with my own money. It has nothing to do with your son.”
Helen rushed forward, wailing.
“Officers, you can ask anyone at Mooncrest Pack Academy. Everyone knows this girl was obsessed with my son and begged him to move in with her. Now that she’s gotten tired of him, she wants to kick Elias and his family out. It can’t be that easy!”
The officers seemed to regard it as a dispute between former lovers and were reluctant to get involved.
“Miss, even if the apartment is yours, if you two were living together, it’s understandable that his family would have been staying here. Can’t you settle this privately?”
I looked at them calmly.
“As I’ve already said, he is no longer my boyfriend, and his family has no right to stay here. If you refuse to enforce my property rights, I’ll file a formal complaint with the Pack Council.”
