Chapter 4: I’m Not a Pushover

My Mother-in-Law Gifted Me a Building

"Alright, Uncle Wang. I agree."

The reason Su Miaoke wanted to come for another check-up was that she found the events of last night far too astonishing.

The mysterious old man, and the man who had appeared in her room.

None of it could be explained by common sense.

Although she had a terminal illness, she was willing to take a chance and believe.

The world was a vast place; perhaps a miracle wasn’t out of the question.

"Then follow me inside, and I’ll take your pulse again," Wang Hai said to Su Miaoke.

Su Miaoke followed Divine Doctor Wang into the inner chamber.

"Hss! Strange... this can’t be right."

Wang Hai’s expression turned to one of surprise as he took Su Miaoke’s pulse.

"What is it, Uncle Wang? Is there a problem?"

Su Miaoke’s brow furrowed. Her heart skipped a beat as she instantly grew tense.

"No, this isn’t right." Wang Hai muttered to himself, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Lie down. I’m going to insert a few needles to check," he then said to Su Miaoke.

"Oh, alright."

Su Miaoke lay face down on the bed, and Wang Hai inserted a dozen or so needles into her back through her clothing.

"How do you feel? Is there any discomfort?" Wang Hai asked, a hint of expectation in his voice.

"There was a slight sting when you first put them in, but other than that, I don’t feel anything," Su Miaoke answered.

’Could I really have been wrong?’ Wang Hai muttered, completely baffled.

When he had taken Su Miaoke’s pulse yesterday, it indicated that she had a terminal illness and didn’t have long to live.

Yet upon examining her again today, the symptoms were gone.

Neither the pulse reading nor the acupuncture revealed any sign of it.

This meant only one thing: he had misdiagnosed her yesterday!

He had been practicing medicine for decades and had seen his fair share of terminal illnesses, but he had never once made a misdiagnosis.

This was the first time.

That was why he found it so hard to believe.

"Uncle Wang, what exactly is my condition, then?" Su Miaoke asked.

"Miaoke, it seems Uncle Wang’s old eyes are failing him. I misdiagnosed you yesterday. I’m so sorry for making you worry," Wang Hai said, his face full of remorse.

Hearing this, the tension in Su Miaoke’s brow instantly vanished.

"Uncle Wang, are you saying I don’t have a terminal illness?" Su Miaoke asked, overjoyed.

Uncle Wang nodded. "That’s right. You don’t have a terminal illness!"

He was incredibly relieved that Su Miaoke had come to see him today. Otherwise, he would have carried the weight of this guilt for the rest of his life.

After all, he and Su Miaoke’s father had been friends for many years.

If word got out that he had misdiagnosed his good friend’s daughter, he would be badmouthed by everyone.

"Miaoke, I’m truly sorry. This is all my fault. I’m just getting old and foolish," Wang Hai apologized to Su Miaoke once more.

"Uncle Wang, how could this be your fault? You didn’t do it intentionally. Everyone makes mistakes. Please don’t blame yourself."

Su Miaoke breathed a sigh of relief. At the same time, she recalled the words the old man had spoken to her last night.

「In the underground parking garage.」

Chu Feng was in the middle of calling his manager back.

But the moment the call connected, the other side hung up.

’Damn it, just pick up the phone!’ Chu Feng was getting desperate.

He had wanted to explain the situation to his manager, but he never expected to be blocked.

He opened his social media app and found dozens of sixty-second-long voice messages.

Looking at them, Chu Feng didn’t dare to tap play.

He didn’t need to listen to know it would be a masterclass in cursing.

’Ugh, this is so annoying. Whatever, forget it. I’m not thinking about it anymore.’ Chu Feng leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes.

The moment he closed his eyes, strange information flooded his mind.

’Body Tempering, Qi Cultivation, Foundation Establishment? Merit, Spirit of Heaven and Earth? Isn’t all this stuff only in novels?’ Chu Feng was a little stunned.

For a moment, it all felt so surreal, as if he were in a dream.

’It’s all this woman’s fault. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have been blocked by that exploitative manager. Looks like he’s going to dock my entire bonus for today!’

’Screw it. The second she gets back, I’m leaving. I’ll get back to the office before the afternoon shift starts and get my damn bonus back!’

Chu Feng muttered to himself in the car, getting angrier the more he thought about it.

Roughly forty minutes later, he heard the CLICK-CLACK of high heels.

They grew louder as they approached, coming from a distance.

When he could see clearly, he noticed an old man walking beside Su Miaoke.

He looked to be in his fifties, and the two of them were walking very close, talking and laughing together.

What the fuck!

’An old man!’

All at once, Chu Feng felt an inexplicable surge of jealousy.

"Uncle Wang, there isn’t enough room in my car. Why don’t you drive your own car over first? I’ll be right there," Su Miaoke said to Wang Hai with a smile.

Wang Hai smiled back and said, "Why don’t you ride with me? You can just have your driver bring your car over."

"That works," Su Miaoke agreed at once.

But Chu Feng was instantly pissed.

’Works? What works? If you two run off, where am I supposed to go? Who do I even give the car to?’

"To Beihai Restaurant," Su Miaoke said, glaring at Chu Feng.

"I’m not going!" Chu Feng refused flatly.

He wasn’t sure why, but a wave of jealousy surged through him.

"I told you to go, so go. If you dare to disobey me, I’ll have you sent to prison!" Su Miaoke threatened.

"You think you can scare me? I didn’t touch you! I don’t remember a single thing!"

"It’s only been a dozen hours since we slept together. If we go to a hospital, they’ll definitely be able to find evidence. Are you sure you’re not afraid?" Su Miaoke continued her threats.

"Afraid? My ass! I’ve got nothing now anyway, so I’ve got nothing to lose. You dare call the cops, and I’ll go public with this. We’ll go down together!"

Chu Feng’s sudden and extreme defiance took Su Miaoke by surprise.

"Are you sure you want to play it this way?" Su Miaoke asked.

"Of course I am! I don’t have time to stand around here wasting time with you. I’m already skipping work. If I don’t go back, I won’t even get paid!" Chu Feng fumed.

"How much is your monthly salary? I’ll give you ten times that amount."

"I don’t want it!"

"Are you sure?"

"I’m sure!"

"Then just follow me to Beihai Restaurant first. I’ll let you go as soon as we finish eating. It won’t take more than an hour and a half, tops. How about that?"

"For real? The moment the time is up, I’m leaving. Not a minute more!" Chu Feng stated firmly.

"Fine. You’d better stick to the agreement and follow me obediently. Otherwise, you know the consequences," Su Miaoke said lightly.

With that, she walked straight toward Wang Hai’s car.

Although she and Chu Feng had only just met, her mindset had begun to shift after learning that her terminal illness was truly gone.

After all, this was the man she had been intimate with, the man with whom she had spent a tangled night.

’Couldn’t you have just been this reasonable from the start? You just had to make me lose my temper!’ Chu Feng grumbled as he watched Su Miaoke walk away.

"Uncle Wang, let’s go," Su Miaoke said as she got into Wang Hai’s car.
