Jiang Chiyu’s question was so sharp that even Chen Mo didn’t dare to answer lightly. He hesitated for a moment before saying, “This was information obtained by the Young Master… before he passed away. It is very reliable.”
“Is it?” Jiang Chiyu arched an eyebrow and took a few steps forward. “Is the source of the information reliable, or is it only reliable because it came out of your Young Master’s mouth?”
Chen Mo frowned. “Is there a difference?”
“Of course. What if the person who told him was unreliable? Spending a hundred million to buy a piece of useless land? What, is Hengchuang trying to do charity for the poor?”
This was an underdeveloped area of Jinghai City, almost as if the city had forgotten to bring it along during its rapid expansion.
Currently, land in Jinghai was worth its weight in gold. She believed the government might want to repurpose this area, but this underdeveloped region was massive. While driving over, she had already seen that it was large enough to contain several small towns.
What if the government didn’t choose this specific plot?
If Hengchuang bought twenty thousand square meters of land and built a high-rise, who would they sell the apartments to? It was far from the city center, and with no schools or large shopping malls nearby, who would want to buy?
“So, are you questioning the Young Master?” Chen Mo stared at Jiang Chiyu, his expression turning solemn. He truly felt that Jiang Chiyu’s courage had grown—and not just by a little.
After a pause, he continued, “If you don’t buy this plot, which one do you want? The one in neighboring Fenglin Town?”
The mockery on his face was becoming impossible to hide, and his tone grew increasingly rude. It was only when he was about to speak again that he realized his slip and abruptly shut his mouth. He was becoming more and more indiscreet.
Before the Young Master left, he had told Chen Mo that although Ms. Jiang was sent from Pei Su’s side, he should still maintain proper etiquette. He needed to treat Ms. Jiang as he treated the Young Master. While it was clearly impossible for him to go that far, basic politeness was still required.
“I apologize, Ms. Jiang. I was out of line. Just treat what I said as a load of hot air.” Chen Mo lowered his head and didn’t say another word.
The man’s change in attitude was strange. Jiang Chiyu stared at him for a few moments before finally saying, “Forget it. Take me to see the owner of this land first.”
After the previous incident, Chen Mo was as obedient as could be. “Certainly, Ms. Jiang. Follow me.”
The buildings in this area were low; at a glance, the tallest was only three stories. It was unclear whether people were unwilling to build higher or simply weren’t allowed to.
After navigating seven or eight turns, Jiang Chiyu and Chen Mo finally arrived at the home of the so-called “tycoon” who owned twenty thousand square meters of land. It was a dilapidated two-story building. They stood outside the wooden door for a moment before Chen Mo gathered the courage to knock.
A dull thud echoed from the wooden door. Jiang Chiyu stood quietly behind him. After a long wait, footsteps finally approached to open the door.
The moment the door opened, Chen Mo was stunned.
Talk about a small world. This was the definition of “enemies crossing paths.” If the owner of the house had opened the door, he wouldn’t have been so shocked. The problem was that the person greeting them wasn’t the owner—it was Pei Su’s assistant.
Indeed, it was the beautiful and capable middle-aged woman whom Pei Su always kept by his side. Perhaps also not expecting this encounter, the woman looked very surprised the moment she saw Chen Mo.
Jiang Chiyu sensed the tension. As soon as the woman turned to walk back inside, she whispered to Chen Mo, “Do you know her?”
He obviously did. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have reacted that way. But she didn’t expect Chen Mo’s answer.
“Yes. She is Pei Su’s assistant.”
That one sentence silenced Jiang Chiyu. What? Who? Pei Su’s assistant? Does that mean the person sitting inside right now is Pei Su himself?
What kind of luck was this? She had just become the Chairwoman and she was already running into a business rival? Would she be assassinated here?
Jiang Chiyu’s imagination was running wild with ridiculous scenarios, yet her pace didn’t falter. she maintained a calm, steady gait. She had to keep up appearances, though she had no idea what this Pei Su was like.
Hopefully, he isn’t some hulking brute, she thought. I have a phobia of overly muscular men.
Chen Mo couldn’t find the right words to describe his current mood. Was it good or complicated? Probably both.
Encountering Pei Su here allowed him to see exactly how Jiang Chiyu would react. If he was lucky, he might even catch her exposing her true colors. However, meeting Pei Su was also a bad sign. It meant Pei Su had already made a move, and he was doing it personally.
It meant he truly intended to oppose Hengchuang this time. Although such things had happened before, this was the first time it had happened without the Young Master around. He had total confidence in his Young Master, but as for Jiang Chiyu… he didn’t trust her one bit.
It would be a miracle if she didn’t leave him constantly worried. What if she revealed a weakness here, was discovered, and then teamed up with Pei Su to finish him off? He might not even be able to send word back to the Young Master.
As his thoughts grew more absurd, Chen Mo cut himself off. It was too ridiculous.
“Ms. Jiang, since Pei Su’s assistant is here, Pei Su himself must be here as well. He is not a good man. You should be careful.”
“And then?” Jiang Chiyu arched her brow as she walked ahead of him. “And then? Is that all you have to say? Don’t you want to say something like, ‘I won’t let him get away with anything’?”
After a moment of silence, Chen Mo replied, “I hold a clerical position. I don’t do the whole ‘fighting and killing’ thing.”
He spoke very sincerely, even offering an apologetic smile at the end. It was clear he was a little sorry—but probably not much.
“I think I need to hire more bodyguards for future trips,” Jiang Chiyu said, staring straight ahead and forcing herself to stay calm. “Does Hengchuang have a lot of business rivals? Tell me, so I can be mentally prepared.”
Chen Mo observed her expression and spoke truthfully. “Hengchuang doesn’t have many enemies, but the Young Master had plenty.”
In other words: Hengchuang might be fine, but your late husband left you a long list of people who hold a grudge. Since they can’t take it out on him anymore, they might just come for you.
“How much is the monthly salary for the best bodyguard in Jinghai?” Jiang Chiyu asked. “I want ten.”
