After returning from Lishui Town, Jiang Chiyu did not head back to Hengchuang. Instead, she had Chen Mo drive her straight back to the Pei residence. She had already spent the best hours of the day on work; now, she needed a good rest, or how else would she be able to sleep tonight?
Meanwhile, the board members, who had sent people to tail Jiang Chiyu early that morning, fell into a collective silence once they learned of her exploits.
If they were to say she did a poor job… how could snatching all the land Pei Su was about to buy be considered “poor”?
But how could her style be considered appropriate for a major corporation?
What was the difference between this and those social media videos about “real-life business warfare”—where instead of sending a gang to beat someone up, they just send someone to pour boiling water on the rival company’s money tree?
It was nothing but embarrassing.
The white-haired old man who had led the discussion at noon nearly fainted from rage upon hearing the news.
However, once he finally regained consciousness, he simply waved a hand. “Regardless of how that girl did it, as long as the final result aligns with our intentions, I won’t have any objections. What do the rest of you think?”
In truth, everyone present felt more or less the same. They were a group of people who cared only for results. Who cared how Jiang Chiyu got it done?
As long as she could deliver, they were happy.
The process was no longer important.
“Young Master, I feel like if you let Jiang Chiyu sit in your position any longer, the reputation you worked so hard to build will be completely destroyed by her!”
As soon as he dropped Jiang Chiyu off, Chen Mo couldn’t wait to start venting to Pei Jinnian. His voice was so loud that even from abroad, Pei Jinnian could tell exactly how resentful Chen Mo’s expression was.
It certainly wasn’t any better than the look he had when he first found out they would be staying in the country separately.
But among all those around him, Chen Mo was the one Pei Jinnian trusted most. Having Chen Mo guard Jiang Chiyu gave him much more peace of mind.
“It’s fine. I can just rebuild it when the time comes.”
His tone was indifferent. Chen Mo was about to add a few more points, but Pei Jinnian spoke again, successfully cutting him off. “Go back for now. I’ve arranged for people to watch the area around the Pei house. Just come back for her at eight tomorrow morning.”
Even though Pei Jinnian didn’t specify who “she” was, Chen Mo knew exactly who he meant. “I don’t think Jiang Chiyu can get up by eight.”
He had waited outside for hours this morning before seeing her emerge from her room. If he came at eight tomorrow, wouldn’t he just be waiting for several more hours?
But Pei Jinnian’s intention wasn’t just for him to pick her up. “If she hasn’t woken up, you wait outside. It’s best not to let her have a single moment alone.”
“The night guards will stay until eight. If you aren’t there by eight-thirty, they will leave. If you aren’t there to watch over her, Pei Su might find her that day.”
Pei Jinnian spoke significantly more than usual this time. After finishing, he fell silent, waiting for a response.
“Understood.”
What else could Chen Mo say? He could only agree and wait for the person Pei Jinnian mentioned to take over his shift before leaving.
However, he waited a long time before someone finally arrived. The man’s outfit didn’t look like he was there to guard someone; it looked like he was there to take Jiang Chiyu’s life.
Staring at the wooden club in the man’s hand—which was thicker than Chen Mo’s forearm—Chen Mo plucked up the courage to ask, “What… is that for?”
His eyes were fixed on the massive club, but the answer he received had nothing to do with it. “I’m here to relieve you.”
That wasn’t what he asked.
Unsure if the man didn’t understand or if he hadn’t been clear enough, Chen Mo hesitated for a moment before speaking again. “I’m asking what you’re doing with that wooden club in your hand.”
As he spoke, he specifically pointed at the club the man was weighing in his palm.
Finally, the man understood. He lifted the hand holding the club and waved it in front of Chen Mo. “This? I’m afraid someone might try to hit me if they find me, so I brought it for self-defense.”
His tone was incredibly earnest, as if he were truly, sincerely terrified of unknown attackers.
“Alright. Actually, I think… you don’t really need to carry that. With your build, I doubt an average person would be a match for you.”
Chen Mo muttered softly as he walked away, not moving too slowly for fear the man might get angry and give him a whack with that club.
That guy had more muscle than Chen Mo had fat. What on earth was he afraid of?
With Jiang Chiyu’s tiny frame, what could she possibly do to him even if she found him?
Could she actually beat him to death?
It was simply a redundant worry.
But Chen Mo didn’t dare say these things to the man’s face; he only dared to gossip about him in his head after slipping away.
When Jiang Chiyu arrived home, she suddenly realized she had become the most unwelcome person there.
It wasn’t just because Cheng Wanru didn’t like her, but because everyone there seemed to harbor a dislike for her.
From Cheng Wanru, Pei Jinnian’s biological mother, down to the woman tending the garden, no one gave her a pleasant look.
If she were a “soft persimmon” who could be easily bullied, she might have just endured it and let it pass.
But she wasn’t.
She was the one who had inherited all of Pei Jinnian’s estate. If she let these people bully her, wouldn’t people laugh their heads off?
Jiang Chiyu intentionally stood in the yard playing with her phone, waiting for the middle-aged woman cleaning the fallen leaves to approach her.
The woman was quite fast. Jiang Chiyu hadn’t even been standing there for a minute when the woman, who had been several meters away, suddenly “teleported” in front of her. Holding a pair of sharp-tipped tongs used for picking up leaves, she saw Jiang Chiyu standing in the way and used the tongs to tap against Jiang Chiyu’s calf.
The movement was incredibly sudden. Even though Jiang Chiyu was somewhat prepared, she hadn’t expected it to go that far. She stopped playing with her phone immediately and looked down at the woman. “You don’t need to come in tomorrow. Your salary will be deposited into your card at the end of the month.”
Her tone was casual and her gaze was calm, but her words left the woman stunned on the spot.
“What?”
The tongs in the woman’s hand were lifted almost immediately, as if she were about to stab Jiang Chiyu with them. “On what grounds are you firing me? Did I do something wrong? Just because I told you to move and not block my path?”
Jiang Chiyu looked her in the eye calmly, her expression unchanging. “I’m not firing you because of that. Don’t flatter yourself; I’m not that petty. I simply don’t like the look of you. Now go. If you want ‘N+1’ compensation, that’s fine too—have your lawyer come talk to me.”
With that, she turned and walked inside, leaving behind a very cool silhouette.
She had lied about one thing just now. Sorry, but she really was exactly that petty.
