Jiang Chiyu thought she would spend her first night at the Pei residence tossing and turning, but to her surprise, she fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.
The most critical point was that another man used to sleep in this room. Now, that man was dead. Her ability to sleep so soundly proved that, in a way, she was unusually bold.
Due to the lack of time, the festive decorations in her and Pei Jinnian’s wedding chamber hadn’t been removed. Intricate paper-cut window flowers were still pasted on the glass. Moonlight filtered through the patterns, casting shadows onto Jiang Chiyu’s face like an old oil painting.
In the middle of the night, this was the scene Pei Jinnian encountered when he pushed the door open.
The exquisite makeup the girl wore during the day had been completely washed away. What the foundation had hidden wasn’t a flawed face, but a palm-sized, rosy, and flawless countenance. Her breathing was light, and her thick black eyelashes trembled occasionally, perhaps due to a bad dream.
Pei Jinnian’s gaze lingered on her for a few seconds before shifting away.
He hadn’t returned so late to do anything ungentlemanly; he had simply left his medicine in the room. His medication was specially formulated. Since it was late and his private doctor was already fast asleep, he decided it was better to come back himself than to disturb someone else.
After gathering enough medicine for the next month, Pei Jinnian prepared to leave. However, as he passed the bedside, his footsteps faltered slightly.
How long will this one last before revealing her true colors?
A week? Half a month? Or a month?
Pei Jinnian didn’t know, but he could afford to wait. As for the money she was spending… he would recover every cent of it from Pei Su.
“What? What did you say? Pei Jinnian is really dead?”
A middle-aged man’s shocked shout echoed from a building in Wanliu Academy, a famous luxury residential area in Jinghai City.
“President Pei, it’s absolutely true! I saw it with my own eyes! The one driving was that Chen Mo who follows Pei Jinnian. Although he was banged up pretty badly, his injuries were superficial. Pei Jinnian, who was in the back seat, was far worse off. Do you know what kind of vehicle hit them?”
“It was a heavy truck loaded with steel bars! The driver was in such a rush that the vehicle made a 180-degree turn. The steel bars that should have been in the back swung around to the front. The back half of Pei Jinnian’s Maybach was shredded, let alone Pei Jinnian sitting inside!”
The man standing before Pei Su with a hunched back grew more excited as he spoke. He concluded, “Pei Jinnian, sitting in the back, is definitely as dead as can be!”
A rare smile appeared on Pei Su’s stern face. He held a cigarette between his fingers and nodded slightly. “If Pei Jinnian isn’t dead, then the one who will be ‘as dead as can be’ is you.”
He spoke casually, but the man kneeling before him was instantly terrified. His lips trembled, and cold sweat broke out across his back and forehead.
“I… I really wasn’t lying… I saw it with my own eyes. There was someone else with me. I—I can bring him here to testify for me. President Pei, you have to believe me…”
Pei Su didn’t want to hear these meaningless words. He took a leisurely drag of his cigarette and exhaled a large cloud of white smoke. “Wasn’t Pei Jinnian supposed to get married today? Who did he marry? I tried to push so many women on him before and he refused them all. Now he suddenly marries one… Is she someone he likes?”
The man thought for a moment before daring to answer. “I heard it was a flash marriage. Maybe it was… love at first sight?”
“Love at first sight?” Pei Su sneered. “Could a cold-blooded animal like Pei Jinnian actually fall in love at first sight? Don’t you find that hilarious?”
Pei Su’s expression was grim. The man didn’t dare speak for a while, keeping his head down and staring at the floor.
After an unknown amount of time—during which the man noticed several drops of his cold sweat hit the floor—he finally heard Pei Su’s cold voice.
“Go keep an eye on that woman Pei Jinnian married. See if she’s just a trophy wife or one with actual substance.”
The man immediately responded loudly, “Yes, President Pei!”
He turned and headed for the door, his pace quickening. Once he was out of Pei Su’s line of sight, he practically started running. People said working for Pei Su was like working for a tiger; he finally understood. All this talk about death—who could handle that?
I suspect the deaths of those six women had nothing to do with the Eldest Young Master, but were actually the work of President Pei himself…
Jiang Chiyu woke up at noon. Her phone hadn’t received a single message urging her to go to work.
She had taken half a month off in advance for her “honeymoon.” Now, the reason should probably be changed to: “Holding a vigil for my husband.”
She climbed out of bed in a daze and shuffled into the bathroom. After rummaging around for a long time, she couldn’t find a new toothbrush. She had to rinse her mouth with plain water for now and plan to buy a new one later.
When Jiang Chiyu opened the door and came out, she had changed into a full black suit. Her hair was tied into a neat bun, so the overall look wasn’t too somber.
Before she even stepped off the spiral staircase, a gentle voice drifted up from below. “Does Xiaoyu usually sleep until this late at home? Don’t you need to help your mother with some chores?”
Before Cheng Wanru even finished her sentence, Jiang Chiyu guessed what she was getting at. Thinking that this was her late husband’s biological mother, Jiang Chiyu waited for her to finish before speaking.
“At home, I’m only responsible for eating. If that makes you uncomfortable, Mom, then I’ll…”
She paused for a second, waiting for Cheng Wanru to look at her before continuing, “…then I’ll just hire a few more maids.”
Anyway, it wasn’t her money.
Chen Mo walked in just in time to hear this. His eyelid flickered. He somewhat admired Jiang Chiyu’s boldness. This was the Young Master’s biological mother. Although the Young Master wasn’t very close to Madam, he was still respectful. Miss Jiang had only been married for two days… As expected of someone sent by Pei Su; she was truly daring.
Despite his thoughts, Chen Mo wasn’t there for the drama; he was looking for Jiang Chiyu.
“Miss Jiang, there are some matters at the company that require your personal attention. Have you finished lunch?”
Jiang Chiyu was confused. She didn’t understand what matters could possibly require her attention. However, she spoke honestly. “Not yet.”
“Then let’s just eat later. The situation is quite urgent.”
“?”
