“Miss, I’ve found a few positions for you. They don’t require a Master’s degree, work experience, or the need to develop new clients. They also don’t require a background in software, computer science, or electronics. Would you like to take a look?”
“Mhm.” Tu Yiyi swept her gaze over the list, her eyes instantly landing on the ZL Company logo.
“This one looks good.” She tapped on a specific job posting on the tablet.
Position: Receptionist. Requirements: Good image and temperament; age 22–30; Bachelor’s degree; major irrelevant; fluency in English preferred.
Zhuo Jin whispered a reminder, “Miss, the salary for a receptionist is quite meager.”
Yiyi frowned. “Am I someone who lacks money? Do I look like I care about a few pennies?”
Jian Lei asked, “Does Miss want to enter ZL?”
Yiyi nodded. “If I’m going in, I’m going into the richest, most badass company.”
ZL was the top-tier high-tech group in the country and ranked among the top three globally. Their portfolio covered AI, virtual imaging, chips, smart manufacturing, autonomous driving, and bioengineering. They also had a world-famous division: game development.
That afternoon, Jian Lei drove the red Ferrari to take Yiyi shopping for clothes. S-City’s luxury shopping district welcomed a young, incredibly wealthy “new money” client who was specifically looking for an outfit suitable for a receptionist.
After submitting her resume and passing two phone interviews, Tu Yiyi walked into the ZL headquarters three days later, dressed in designer labels. She gave a polite smile. “I’m here to interview for the receptionist position.”
The HR recruiter was stunned. This girl is clearly a rich second-generation socialite! Why is she competing for a lowly receptionist job?!
As a professional at a global corporation, the recruiter kept a poker face despite the internal hurricane of confusion.
Tu Yiyi’s handwriting wasn’t great. Accustomed to calligraphy brushes, she found the ballpoint pen stiff and accidentally poked two holes through the application form.
HR: “…” Rich kids really do have tempers.
After struggling to decipher the handwriting, HR’s pupils dilated again.
Age: 723 years old. She probably meant 23, right?
Hobbies: Eating chicken. (Ah, a gamer. Though PUBG isn’t as popular as it was a few years ago. Does she play Honor of Kings or League of Legends?
Education: Bachelor’s. Major: English. Only these two parts seemed normal.
Address: Royal Palace Villa No. 1. She lives in a top-tier mansion and wants to be a receptionist? Is she just here to prune our nerves?
The Administrative Manager didn’t like her at all and was moments away from saying “Get out.” To be fair, the manager had asked, “Do you understand what a receptionist does?”
Yiyi replied honestly, “No. But I have a few small requirements.”
An applicant with requirements? The manager asked grimly, “Go on.”
“First, I don’t transfer calls. It’s a hassle. Second, I don’t receive visitors; I don’t want to waste breath on strangers. Third, I don’t serve tea or water. At home, my servants do that for me; there’s no reason for me to serve others. As for mail and packages, I won’t do that either—people should keep their private mail out of the office.”
Just as they were about to kick this “wealthy useless person” out of ZL, a legendary figure arrived.
Possessing unparalleled beauty and wisdom, an icon to millions, and a woman whose every move influenced global stock markets—Lin Ai, Chairman and CEO of ZL Group, stepped out of her car.
The staff’s eyes lit up with genuine worship. “Good morning, President Lin!”
Lin Ai wore a grey professional suit. Her physique and face were flawless—the most perfect beauty among beauties.
When Yiyi saw her, her gaze lingered. She narrowed her eyes, watching Lin Ai more intently than she ever had Gu Xiaofeng. Lin Ai looked back, and their gazes met. Both saw a flicker of a meaningful smile in the other’s eyes.
“Miss Tu, thank you for choosing ZL. Unfortunately, you aren’t suited for this role. You may leave,” the HR manager said politely.
But to everyone’s shock, President Lin offered a perfect smile. “Miss Tu, if you don’t mind, shall we have a chat?” She reached out to HR. “Give me her resume.”
Everyone except Yiyi: “…” The CEO is interviewing her personally? This is Vice President treatment.
In the private room, Lin Ai turned off the cameras and studied the resume. “Miss Tu is a bit over the age limit. 723 is quite old.”
Yiyi replied in fluent French, “Where I come from, that’s considered very young.”
Lin Ai smiled. “Your French is good.”
“My German, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, and Arabic are all ‘so-so’,” Yiyi replied, switching between German and Italian.
Lin Ai’s gaze was appreciative. “So young, yet you know so much… Impressive.”
Yiyi looked at her. “You’re not simple either.”
“As a human, your DNA is quite extraordinary. In fact, it’s close to a certain animal,” Lin Ai explained with a perfect smile. “There happened to be a bit of skin dander on this resume. Also, I mean no offense.”
Yiyi had learned a tiny bit about DNA in her three days among humans. To her, it was just a more reliable version of the “blood-drop test.” She raised an eyebrow, letting a bit of her Fox Spirit aura leak out. “As a human, you don’t have a scent of humanity at all. Also quite impressive.” She added politely, “I mean no provocation.”
Lin Ai smiled. “I know. But I want to know: why ZL?”
“Because I want to blend in with humans. Do you believe me?”
“I do,” Lin Ai said. “I also want to blend in. I even wish I was a human.”
Yiyi left ZL in a great mood. Lin Ai had hired her and even assigned her a “Receptionist Assistant.” Moreover, if she got bored at the front desk, she was allowed to wander anywhere in the company—even the core R&D labs.
The employees soon realized there was a new “socialite” in the office who wore designer brands and wandered around. She was rarely at the desk for more than an hour a day. She was pretty, always smiling, and had a soft, sweet personality, calling everyone “Big Brother” or “Big Sister.”
She didn’t care for the cold machines or boring data in the labs, but she was always present when the female employees talked about clothes, bags, movies, or gossip. When food was mentioned, she practically drooled.
“Tu Yiyi, there’s a slice of pizza left. Want it?” someone yelled.
“Yes! I’m coming!” Yiyi would arrive like a whirlwind.
“Yiyi, you should join the Olympics. You’d win gold with that speed!”
Yiyi just giggled, eating her pizza. “I don’t like competitions. Too much pressure.”
One day, someone shouted, “Gu Xiaofeng’s new movie is coming out for the National Day holiday!”
Everyone huddled around. “Which one?”
“Hidden! A spy thriller! Look, my Goddess looks so good in a military uniform!” A girl played the trailer. “So cool and beautiful!”
Seeing “Cao-cao” on the screen, Yiyi couldn’t sit still. She slipped back to the front desk, put on headphones, and watched the trailer alone. Cao-cao looks so good with a gun!
But her favorite was still the tragic “Fang Cao.”
During the quiet afternoon break, Yiyi closed her eyes. Two images dominated her mind: Fang Cao crying behind a tree as her lover married someone else, and Fang Cao dying in her lover’s arms with a tear of sad happiness.
Every time she thought of that death scene, her heart ached so much she could hardly breathe, as if she had lived through that parting herself.
No! Yiyi gripped her hands tight. She didn’t die. She’s not dead!
