The gray glow of dawn slowly slipped through the gaps in the thick leaves above the forest, pushing away the thin mist that had covered their cave hideout since midnight.
The morning air felt biting cold, dragging a damp chill into the stone room, which now felt much larger because most of their things had already been packed away.
In the corner, the ashes from last night’s fire still carried a faint smell of burning wood, mixed with the heavy scent of herbal medicine clinging to the cave walls.
Valerie stood quietly near the cave entrance, wrapping her old gray wool cloak around her slim shoulders to block the morning wind.
Her hand, once scratched by a branch during her escape months ago, had already healed, leaving behind a faint thin line that reminded her where all this madness had begun.
Her eyes stared out at the forest beyond, where the human world she knew would soon be left behind for absolute uncertainty.
“Are you starting to regret it after seeing how dark the road ahead of us is, Valerie?” Caleb asked as he stepped closer from inside the cave, his footsteps barely making a sound on the damp ground.
“I never regret a choice I made on purpose, Caleb.
I’m just thinking whether my world is going to miss me,” Valerie replied without looking away from the misty dawn outside.
“Your world might not even notice, but I know for sure I would not have gotten this far without what’s in your head,” Caleb said.
He deliberately stood beside her to block the cold wind blowing in from the front.
“That might be the sweetest confession I’ve ever heard from a wolf who usually acts like he hates everyone,” Valerie muttered.
Caleb let out a low huff and turned his face away.
There was a faint red tint on his cheek.
“Don’t get too full of yourself, human.
I’m only stating a logical fact so you do not suddenly pass out from fear when that portal opens,” Caleb said in his usual defensive tone, the one he always used to hide his own anxiety.
Behind them, Captain Vane stepped out carrying a large leather bag filled with all the sulfur powder and herbs they had carefully prepared over the past few weeks.
His steps were steady, even though the wound in his chest still sent a dull ache through him whenever he drew in a deep breath.
The veteran soldier’s face looked tense, carrying the full weight of the mission waiting for them once they stepped onto werewolf border land.
“Lord Caleb, Miss Valerie, the black magic coordinates from the remaining portal I used back then are already resonating with this dawn energy,” Vane said after checking a small crystal stone glowing a deep purple in his palm.
“Is it stable enough to carry the three of us at once without leaving a limb behind in the dimensional crack, Captain?” Valerie asked, turning to face him with a very serious expression.
“This black magic is highly unstable for an ordinary human, Miss Valerie, but with the aura protection from Lord Caleb’s pure Alpha blood, we will be safe,” Vane explained, bowing respectfully to reassure her.
“Hear that, Valerie?
So stay close to me if you do not want to get thrown into some empty void,” Caleb said, his voice firm, his eyes locked on Valerie as if he would not accept any argument.
“I know how to take care of myself, Caleb, so save that protective attitude for the enemies who are going to face your sword later,” Valerie argued, stepping forward on purpose to show she was not intimidated.
“This human really is stubborn, Vane.
I do not know how the battle is going to go if she keeps arguing with every word I say,” Caleb grumbled.
Captain Vane could not help a faint smile at the tension hanging over the morning.
“Lord Caleb surely knows that Miss Valerie’s stubbornness is exactly why we even have a chance to go home and win now,” Vane replied wisely, leaving Caleb silent because he could not deny the truth of his subordinate’s words.
The three of them began walking out of the escape cave, descending the slippery rocky slope covered in morning dew toward the deepest part of the Forbidden Forest.
This was the place where, months ago, the ancient magical portal had opened for a brief moment after Vane was thrown to Earth half dead.
The air around the area felt different.
There was an invisible magical pressure that made Valerie’s skin prickle at once, even though she tried hard to stay calm.
Caleb stopped right in front of a large stone circle buried under thick moss and dead branches twisting around it.
He closed his eyes for a moment, letting his wolf instincts sense the flow of forbidden magic still moving through the ground beneath their feet.
The wolf ears hidden in his black hair twitched sharply, catching a low humming frequency no human could hear.
“The energy is here, Vane.
Get ready to spill the summoner’s blood onto the center stone,” Caleb ordered, pointing at a flat rock in the middle of the circle.
“Understood, my lord.
Let me open the gate first,” Vane answered, drawing a small dagger from his waist in one smooth, practiced motion.
“Wait a second, Captain.
Is this summoning process going to trigger some kind of flash that the city people outside the forest can see?” Valerie asked, grabbing Vane’s arm with a worried tactical look.
“No, Miss Valerie.
This ancient black magic absorbs the light around it when it activates, so from the outside it will only look like thick fog,” Vane explained, giving her a calming smile before slicing the tip of his dagger across his own palm.
Fresh dark red blood dripped from Vane’s hand and fell directly onto the flat stone surface, which immediately soaked it up like dry sponge.
At once, the ground beneath them began to tremble softly, creating a low rumbling sound that sent tiny pebbles scattering around the circle.
The air in front of them warped and bent, rippling like a desert mirage before a silver purple dimensional tear slowly began to form in the empty air.
Valerie instinctively stepped back when a strong wave of icy wind burst out from inside the dimensional rip.
The smell of rusted iron and scorched dry earth hit her nose hard, giving her the first real hint of how broken the world she was about to enter truly was.
Her heart slammed against her ribs, a raw human fear rising up before something beyond reason.
“Do not step back, Valerie.
Hold my hand right now if you want to stay alive,” Caleb said, his voice hard, but his worry was impossible to miss.
“I am not backing up because I am scared, Caleb.
I am just adjusting my balance because the ground is shaking,” Valerie shot back, though her voice trembled just a little, and she could not hide it from the wolf prince’s sharp hearing.
“Stop acting tough in front of a black magic portal, Valerie.
Give me your hand now,” Caleb said again.
He did not wait for an answer.
He reached out and grabbed Valerie’s right hand, locking his fingers around hers with a grip that was firm and warm.
Valerie froze when she felt the warmth coming from Caleb’s hand, a real contrast to the terrifying cold pouring from the portal in front of them.
That grip was steady, giving her a sense of safety that slowly calmed the panic beating in her chest.
She looked at Caleb’s face and saw him watching her with a faint smile, one the stubborn prince almost never showed.
“Are human hands always this cold when danger shows up, Valerie?” Caleb asked, his voice softer now.
He tightened his grip as if afraid she might disappear if he loosened it even a little.
“My hand gets cold because my world has normal dawn temperatures, not because I am scared like your wolf brain thinks,” Valerie said, trying to defend herself rationally even while silently appreciating the warmth he gave her.
“You two need to move now.
This magic veil will not hold for more than two minutes,” Vane warned urgently.
He had already stepped closer to the edge of the portal, his body starting to glow with purple magic.
“We go in together on the count of three, Valerie.
Stay focused on your footing and do not look back,” Caleb instructed, tugging Valerie closer to his shoulder.
“I understand, Caleb.
Let’s finish what we started on the dirt map last night,” Valerie replied, raising her eyes to the silver purple vortex ahead of them with absolute determination.
“One,” Caleb muttered, taking his first step forward.
“Two,” Valerie continued, matching her stride with the strong movement of Caleb beside her.
“Three,” Caleb whispered right as their bodies touched the glowing surface of the magical portal.
The blinding silver purple light swallowed the entire view of Earth’s green, misty forest from Valerie’s sight in an instant.
A violent wave of dizziness hit her head like her whole body was being forced to spin inside some endless container.
Her hearing was filled with a deafening hum, while her vision blurred into nothing but fast moving streaks of magical light all around them.
Yet through all that terrifying dimensional chaos, Valerie could feel one thing that stayed steady from the very beginning.
Caleb’s hand around her fingers never loosened once.
In fact, it tightened even more with incredible force, as if he was pouring everything he had into making sure Valerie would not be torn away from his side.
The pure Alpha aura from Caleb’s body wrapped around them like an invisible shield, pushing back every bit of black magic pressure trying to shred Valerie’s human awareness apart.
Slowly but surely, the horrible spinning sensation began to fade, and gravity jerked their bodies downward again with brutal force.
Valerie’s feet slammed onto hard, very dry ground, making her stumble forward before Caleb’s strong arm quickly caught her around the waist so she would not crash onto the stone.
She panted hard, trying to breathe in new air that felt dry, dusty, and thick with the smell of scorched earth.
Valerie slowly opened her eyes and blinked several times to make her sight adjust to the brightness of this new place.
When her vision finally cleared, her whole body went completely still at the view spread out before her.
There were no giant green trees now.
No calming rustle of leaves.
No damp forest cold from Earth that had been her hiding place for months.
In front of them stretched a wide but ruined borderland, covered in cracked red brown dirt dried out from long lasting drought.
In the distance, broken stone watchtowers stood half collapsed, with torn and burned war banners hanging sadly from blackened wooden poles.
The sky above was not blue at all.
It was a deep gray red color, as if it were permanently covered in smoke from endless war in this world.
“Welcome to my ruined world, Valerie,” Caleb said, his voice heavy and full of deep pain as he looked at his homeland again.
Valerie slowly let go of Caleb’s hand and took a few steps forward to look more closely at the devastation below the border slope.
Dry desert wind blew across her face, tossing red dust that clung at once to her gray cloak.
The full reality finally hit her hard.
She had truly crossed beyond the dimensional void.
“This place is far more terrifying than what I drew on the cave floor, Caleb,” Valerie whispered, genuine fear filling her voice as she looked at the suffering land before her.
“This is the result of my brother’s greed, turning fertile royal land into a slaughter field just to keep his power,” Caleb replied, both hands clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white from the rage burning in his chest.
“Lord Caleb is right, Miss Valerie.
What you see now is only the outer gate of this barren border,” Vane added, standing beside them and scanning the area with the sharp alertness of a veteran soldier.
“If the outer gate already looks this destroyed, I cannot even imagine what the common people living in the border villages below are going through,” Valerie muttered, her eyes catching a thin trail of black smoke rising from the direction of the settlement in the lower valley.
“They live under absolute fear, Valerie.
Every supply they have is taken, and every refusal is paid for with death,” Caleb explained, stepping forward ahead of Valerie to make sure no enemy patrol had detected their arrival at the portal point.
Valerie drew in a deep breath, letting the dry air of the werewolf world fill her lungs and strengthen the resolve that had shaken for only a brief second under the shock.
She looked at the natural topography spread out before her now and matched every cliff and ruin with the dirt sketch she had memorized in her head for weeks.
The first step of their plan had begun, and there was no way back to the human world on the other side.
“Wipe that sad look off your face, Caleb.
Anger will not rebuild those fallen stone towers,” Valerie warned, her tone once again firm and carrying the authority of a strategist.
“I know, Valerie.
I just needed one minute to remember the pain from that night of betrayal,” Caleb replied, turning his body and meeting her with golden eyes now burning with fighting resolve.
“We have a solid strategy, we have sulfur powder, and we have a secret route they do not know about,” Valerie said, stepping closer to Caleb with a confident smile that pushed some of the darkness out of the air around them.
“Then what is the first order from our genius human brain to get all this moving, Valerie?” Caleb asked, his tone a little teasing now, trying to ease the tension between them.
“Tell Captain Vane to lead us toward the isolated village in the western mountain slope sector right now before the sun gets any higher,” Valerie ordered without the slightest hesitation, her finger pointing at the hidden crack between the rocky hills shrouded beneath smoke and mist.
“Hear that, Vane?
Move ahead and make sure we do not leave footprints on this dry red ground,” Caleb said to his subordinate with a firm nod.
“Understood, Lord Caleb.
Follow my steps and stay in the shadow of the rock cliffs,” Vane answered quickly, already moving fast along the hidden path between the mountain slope’s cracks.
Caleb turned once more toward Valerie before they started descending after Captain Vane into this dangerous world.
He held out his hand to her again, an open sign of protection that Valerie no longer refused.
She took it with an equally firm grip.
Under the gray red sky of the strange werewolf world, the three of them walked together across the boundary between dimensions, ready to move the chess pieces of their tactical war and bring down the tyrant’s throne from the darkness itself.
