Chapter 7: The Tavern

Mythos: The Undefeated One

Luke stared at the contents written on the screen that had just appeared at his front In shock. The game had literally just started, literally, he was certain he just walked through the uncanny hill village’s gate and yet somewhere in the world someone had already unlocked their class?!

Meaning they completed the mission tied to their class already.

But that wasn’t the only thing that bothered Luke, that same individual also had the alias of the person who had held the position of the leader boards for five straight years!

Luke had spent some money once to spectate one of his battles and he was baffled, the leveling maniac was truly insane, it was like he was born to play.

Luke hasn’t even thought about competition or anything of the sort, but now someone out there has begun keeping the world on their toes. He recalled there was an option for the world discussion forum, he was interested in what the world thought about this.

Scrolling through the screen, he found the option he was searching for.

[Mythos World wide forum]

Just as Luke had thought, the most trending thread was the topic on the leveling maniac.

Thread: WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?! Class unlocked in 3 minutes?!

"Is anyone else seeing this global announcement? The gates literally just opened! I haven’t even finished talking to the first village NPC and some monster already has a verified class?

How is that mechanically possible? Is the game bugged?"

Look at the alias, you idiot. It’s HIM. The same guy from the previous server who held rank 1 for five years straight. The "Leveling psycho"

Wait, the actual legend? I thought those beta rumors were fake! I paid 500 credits to see his final raid last season. If he’s here, the leaderboard race is already over for the rest of us.

To unlock a class this fast, he must have skipped the tutorial entirely, ignored the starting village quests, and sprinted straight into a high danger hidden zone. The risk is insane. We don’t even know if we would respawn if we die?!!

Let’s do the math. Base movement speed at Level 1 gets you maybe 200 meters in three minutes. To unlock a class that fast, the gate had to be right outside the spawning gate. This means the spawn locations aren’t random. He knew exactly where to log in. But still that is somewhat wrong. Did he clear a dungeon that fast or was it Something else?

Or he found a secret exploit. Five years at the top means he probably had insider info or alpha tester data. No way a normal player moves that fast without a mount.

Luke closed the forum tab, his fingers hovering over his own interface. The global chat was moving too fast to read, moving at hundreds of messages per second, all speaking of the same mix of awe and panic.

He then realized that the sun had begun setting, he should find a place to sleep and get ready for the summoning of the uncanny seer. However before that, Luke decided to branch to a tavern, he wanted knowledge about a thing or two and that was of course the best place to find it.

Without wasting time, Luke made his way through the streets, the NPCs seemed to be getting done with their day to day activities.

Brushing past several villagers, he got a few surprised stares.

Luke wondered if it was his armour, mask or something else, he then finally located and entered a tavern.

The village itself had a stench, however Luke could manage it, as it was not that suffocating, but the tavern on the other hand reeked with a pungent smell, which to Luke was quite unbearable, yet still, he forced himself and proceeded.

Without paying attention to the various individuals on various tables on both sides of the tavern who were either, drinking, gossiping or gnawing on something, Luke headed straight for the bar keep.

Standing behind the counter was a man, with a partly white beard that seemed to be a bit dirtier than the tavern itself. A bald head and a fat belly, covered by an apron that barely fit.

The man looked at him a bit surprised, immediately his demeanor changed and then he spoke.

"I am Carter, welcome to my humble tavern, we have the best of drinks, alcohol, hale, name it, we have got everything you might need, including a place to stay. "

Luke immediately brought out a silver coin and tossed it to the bar keep in one flick of his finger then rested his hand on the slightly damaged wood.

"I’m here for information, I’m an adventurer from the North and have heard something about a c rank dungeon?"

"And an uncanny seer showing the way to clearing it? "

Luke knew his words were somewhat mismatched, even suspicious but he was hoping to get a thing or two from the old man.

The man stared at the silver coin as if hesitating, then spoke, all I know is that the uncanny seer is crazy and has not left her cottage for a long time, she’s not exactly the helpful type.

And for the dungeon, I have no idea, except for the fact that a powerful party came recently to our village and that’s just basically all I know.

Luke nodded in appreciation, then turned.

What the old man had said felt accurate, the talk about the seer and the powerful party made him certain that there might be a dungeon in this village after all.

Carter probably didn’t know that, because it was the seer that was meant to show him after all. Luke stepped out of the tavern and stopped abruptly. Wondering how this was all going to play out.

One second, he was standing at the front of the swinging tavern door, the next?

He was not.
