Chapter 6: Maniac

Mythos: The Undefeated One

Luke tapped on the first item In the inventory which was the undefeated one’s mask.

[The undefeated one’s mask]

Visual: A faceless white visor of cold, unpolished iron, that holds unto the face of the wearer with threads that do not exist.

Lore: It bears no scorches from past battles, the wearer can see through it, but the on looker can’t. No one in mythos had ever known the face of the undefeated one. But whoever set their gaze on that mask had already lost.

[Veil of Summoning from the Uncanny Seer. ]

Visual: A shimmering aura woven from unseen essence.

Lore: Whenever the undefeated one appeared, the veil arrived before him, it took the form of a lingering mist portraying the strength of who was to come. A power forged from the aura the undefeated one had emanated in one of his battles.

Bright White Sword (Common)

Visual: A simple steel blade painted stark white.

Aura: Glows with a faint, comforting warmth.

Lore: Mass produced for standard guard regiments.

The Unscathed Armour (Common)

Visual: Polished white iron plates without any insignia.

Aura: Feels surprisingly light to the wearer.

Lore: Standard issue gear for lucky frontline recruits.

Luke went through the text and felt a bit enlightened, first and foremost he wasn’t totally alone in this crazy mission of his. He had a cool mask to keep him from totally embarrassing himself, or showing his stupid facial expressions.

And he also had a very cool mist to inform people of his appearance, the reason it related to the uncanny seer was probably because it would appear right before she summoned him.

However some things felt strange and weird to Luke, it was the fact that the gaming system spoke of the undefeated one as someone who had already existed and done stuff like getting the mist and the mask.

He didn’t ponder too much about it, as he knew there was no way to figure it out currently. The rest of the materials were mundane so Luke didn’t really care about it. He proceeded to call the mask from his inventory.

A white mask immediately appeared on his face, covering his forehead down to his jaw, not reaching his ears, it was carved in a somewhat like cross pattern looking symmetrical.

The mask felt warm to the touch, however there were things that felt strange to luke, which was the fact that there was no hole for his eyes to see, yet he could see the whole hill just the same way it had been the second before he put the mask on.

"This is Great."

Luke spoke out loud excited at getting such a cool mask, however his voice sounded different, thicker, deeper and somehow reverent in nature.

For a second, Luke’s hidden mouth hung agape.

’What was that voice?!’

He thought to himself, shocked.

It was no longer an eighteen year old boy talking, but rather a calamity who had been through a thousand battles.

Luke gulped and immediately called out the armour too, there was no need for the bright sword, since there was no battle.

He then walked down towards the gate where he had spotted the two guards earlier. The walk didn’t take long, he was only a few meters away.

"The fee would be 10 bronze coins."

One of the guards, Desmond, spoke with the indifference of someone who had done this a hundred times before, while the other one simply gazed at the stretching fields not even bothering to check Luke as a security measure.

Luke was stunned at the fact that NPCs were really real. But the fact that they simply ignored him as if he had never existed was sort of strange, villages in the kingdom of Dawn were a lot more cautious.

There was something hollow about their gazes, but Luke ignored it and immediately equipped the 10 bronze coins and paid it to Desmond without a hitch.

Luke then made his way into the village, taking in the blissful sight.

In the centre stood a massive cottage, towering above various cottages, which caught Luke’s eye first, it was glowing as though, it was ancient. Luke was wise to assume it was the chief’s residence.

There was a small guild building too, a two storey stone and timber infrastructure with a roaring fireplace, mismatched wooden chairs, and an empty bounty board nailed to the front door. It was mostly unfinished. Still under construction.

A cobblestone square packed with colorful canvas tents, wooden carts, and local farmers trading giant blue pumpkins or glow-in-the-dark herbs.

Houses in the uncanny hill were built from local resources like river stone, moss-covered thatch, and thick timber beams, lots of cottages, inns and so on. Roofs were steeply pitched to shed rain or winter snow, with smoking chimneys and windows made of thick, bubbly green glass.

He could see vast rolling fields beyond the hill top, fenced by low stone walls, where livestock like giant woolly sheep or small drakes, grazed near grain crops. A clear, sharp boundary where the managed village fields ended and a dark, deep and steep primordial descent that led to the middle of the hill began.

Weathered wooden signs with hand-painted icons swung gently in the wind. Faintly humming runes carved into the village’s perimeter stones to keep low level void creatures out.

As Luke took in the sight of NPCs finishing off with their days and players scouring on from one place to another with exasperated expressions, he had a soft chime.

[Ding!]
