What kind of person was Uchiha Shisui?

In Genshin’s view, as far as the village was concerned, he was a conflicted good man.

He was the only pro-village member of the Uchiha—at a time when his clansmen hated Konoha and the higher-ups guarded against the Uchiha.Full novel: Naruto: Is it reasonable to beat up an Otsutsuki with Hamon, right? — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Only Shisui loved both the village and his clan, wanting to preserve both sides.

So his whole life he did one thing—deceiving himself, believing that through gentleness, tolerance, sacrifice, and communication he could resolve the clan’s dead end.

The result was that he pleased neither side.

His clansmen thought he was groveling to Konoha’s higher-ups, while Konoha’s higher-ups saw him as nothing more than a controllable pawn.

In the end, he met his fate by drowning himself.

That he’d pose such a question to himself now—was he beginning to doubt whether everything he was doing was right?

Genshin sighed.

One way or another, he’d become friends with Shisui, and there was no way he could stand by and watch this earnest kid get set up and killed in the end by that scapegoat-king Danzo.

The Uchiha’s rebellion was in fact the ultimate bitter fruit born of Konoha’s long-term, systematic discrimination against this clan.

In truth, right up until the Nine-Tails’ Night, the Uchiha Clan had remained loyal to the village—the clan head Fugaku had even been prepared to lead his people in a desperate fight against the Nine-Tails to clear his clan’s name.

But he was blocked by that old troublemaker Danzo.

After the Nine-Tails’ Night, the ostracism of the Uchiha reached its peak: ANBU monitored the Uchiha twenty-four hours a day and isolated their residential district, and clan members were pointed at and whispered about by villagers whenever they went out.

The entire clan’s dignity and living space were continuously squeezed.

Even at this point, the voices calling for rebellion within the Uchiha clan weren’t actually that loud.

The real reason that finally made them resolve to rebel was…

Genshin lifted his head and looked at the youth before him, who had begun to fidget uneasily because Genshin had been lost in thought for a little too long.

It was the death of Uchiha Shisui that made the Uchiha Clan resolve to rebel.

If even a dove among doves like Shisui had been driven to his death by you Konoha higher-ups, then what way out was left for anyone else?

So the Uchiha Clan, with no way to survive, could only make one final gamble—rebellion.

Recalling Shisui’s choices in the original story, Genshin could roughly guess that Shisui’s greatest obsession right now—or rather, the greatest void of his whole life—was that no one acknowledged the Uchiha’s loyalty.

So what Shisui needed at this moment was neither grand principles, nor an analysis of the situation, and least of all scheming.

“The Uchiha—they’re just a bunch of fools who love the village but don’t know how to express their feelings.”

Genshin’s tone was flat and plain, as if stating a perfectly ordinary fact.

“When they protect the village they’re no different from any other shinobi, but people only remember how cold and aloof they seem, forgetting that they too fight in wars, guard the borders, and bleed for Konoha.”

“Everyone habitually treats them as outsiders, and as time goes on, the rift only grows wider.”

He raised his eyes toward Shisui, his tone earnest yet very calm.

“The Uchiha aren’t wrong, and the village isn’t entirely wrong either—it’s just that no one has ever been willing to stand in the middle and talk things out.

Senior Shisui has always been doing exactly that, so I think you see it all more clearly than anyone.”

Shisui stared blankly at the little red-haired imp before him.

No pity, no favoritism, no childish judgment of good and evil.

Just a light, breezy childish remark—yet it struck deeper than anyone’s comfort ever had.

So…

there really was someone who could understand.

Someone who could understand the years of torment he’d spent caught between clan and village, who could understand that his seemingly pointless persistence wasn’t blind loyalty.

The confusion in Shisui’s eyes gradually cleared.

He let out a soft breath, and his smile, gentle as ever, now carried a bit more sincerity: “Thank you, Genshin-kun.

It’s the first time I’ve ever heard someone…

speak of us like that.”

That counted as resolved, right?

Never thought I’d see the day I became a counselor, Genshin thought, scratching his head.

In Shisui’s eyes, he was just a six-year-old child, but in Genshin’s eyes, Shisui was likewise nothing more than a teenager.

What a rotten world this was, forcing a kid to grapple with a trolley-problem choice between clan and village.

“Come on, come on, a whole afternoon of training’s worn me out.

Let’s drink some water and rest a bit.”

Genshin led the way toward the stone in the shade of a tree at the edge of the field, deliberately turning the page on this somewhat heavy topic.

Shisui pushed down the emotions surging in his heart and followed after Genshin.

Sitting on the stone, he took out his water pouch and drank a mouthful.

His whole bearing was far more relaxed than when he’d arrived; the massive boulder that had weighed on his heart for years seemed to have had a corner pried loose by a single sentence from this six-year-old child.

Seeing Genshin come over, little Hinata obediently made room, then sat pressed tightly against him.

For some reason, she always felt that the Hamon aura about Genshin was especially attractive to her, and instinctively wanted to draw close.

The evening breeze swept across the treetops of the training ground, dispersing the last trace of the heat from the fight.

In the silent atmosphere, an abrupt growling of a stomach suddenly sounded, breaking the quiet.

That sound had come from little Hinata’s stomach—rather loud, too.

She flushed red in an instant, standing up as if to say something but unable to get it out, tears welling in her white pupils from holding it in.

Did this kid grow up eating cuteness?

Why is she so adorable even when she’s embarrassed?

Compared to Shisui’s thorny problem, this kid’s problem was a little easier to solve.

So, for the sake of the little one’s dignity, Genshin drew a breath using the Hamon Breathing Method, letting the Hamon wriggle and squeeze through his stomach and intestines.

“Gurgle-gurgle-gurgle—!”

An even louder belly rumble sounded out, and the startled Shisui and Hinata both looked over at him.

Seizing the moment, he took little Hinata’s hand.

“Time to eat, time to eat.

Burned too much energy this afternoon—I’m starving.”

Before Genshin could speak, Shisui volunteered: “I know a grilled fish shop on Konoha Street—it’s my secret favorite.

Let me take you two to try it.”

With someone treating, Genshin naturally had no objection.

Little Hinata lifted her head slightly and timidly glanced at the Hyuga guard beside her.

The guard bowed as he replied, his tone carrying a trace of helplessness: “Master Genshin, Miss Hinata, before the clan head left he specifically instructed that Miss Hinata may eat and play freely outside today.”

Though he’d looked rather like he was gritting his teeth when he gave that instruction.

…

After finishing the grilled fish, Shisui paid the bill with a bit of a pang.

He hadn’t expected these two kids to eat so much—the amount the two of them put away was nearly enough for ten of his own meals.

Hm?

Why hadn’t Genshin come out of the shop yet?

Just as Shisui was wondering, he saw Genshin come out carrying two bags of packed food, handing them respectively to the Hyuga family guard and the ANBU protecting Genshin, as overtime dinners.

Hm?

Wait—this kid’s way too good at handling people, isn’t he?!

Shisui watched Genshin’s actions dumbfounded, and the little pang he’d felt over his shrunken wallet instantly dissolved.

Though the child was young, he could always notice details others overlooked—even thinking of the guards and ANBU who’d tagged along on errands.

Such delicate consideration was so pleasant it put one right at ease.

The Hyuga guard was stunned for a moment, then hurriedly took the bag and thanked Genshin gravely.

The bit of reluctance he’d felt about having to work overtime protecting the young lady of the main house vanished into thin air.

The ANBU protecting Genshin dropped down upside-down from the shadows of the tree to take the bag, then silently vanished back again.

Though the mask hid his expression, Shisui could be certain he was absolutely delighted.

If the Uchiha all treated people like this…

then who would ever reject them?

Genshin clapped his hands, then looked up to see Shisui watching him with a smile, leaving him a little baffled: “What is it?

The guy followed us around all afternoon—we can’t just send him back on an empty stomach, can we?”

“It’s nothing.

I just feel that it’s really good to have met you.” Shisui shook his head with a guileless smile.

“Let me see you two home.”

Ugh, this earnest kid’s so sappy.

Genshin followed behind, holding little Hinata’s hand.

Having eaten a bellyful of grilled fish, little Hinata’s little face was rosy and plump, and she bounced with every step as she walked.

This kid—had she become fascinated by his Hamon Chakra?

Genshin lowered his head and rubbed her soft little hair, slowly catching on.

Was there some connection there?

He’d find a chance to experiment with it next time.
