“Phew…”
Naruto had just released his Shadow Clones.
With Tiange around, he’d kept his nerves wound tight the whole time without even noticing.
Now that he could finally relax, exhaustion crashed over him all at once.
He was flat on the ground and didn’t want to move a single finger.
About ten minutes later he’d recovered enough to function.
He turned his head with great effort and looked over at Sakura.
“Sakura!”
“You were…
you were so cool today!”
Sakura sat on the ground and reached up out of habit to brush her hair back.
Only then did she realize it was completely soaked through, sweat-drenched, tangled with dust, twisted into matted strands.
She frowned slightly at the sight.
This was the hair she’d always taken such careful care of.
Right now, Sakura felt like it was just too much trouble.
She lowered her hand and looked at her two teammates.
“Was I really that cool?”
“Yeah, incredibly cool!”
Under Sakura’s gaze, even Sasuke gave a small nod of acknowledgment.
He genuinely found her performance today rather impressive.
“I’ll keep it up.
I’m never holding you two back again!”
Sakura smiled, confident and beautiful, and both Naruto and Sasuke went briefly blank.
They say a confident girl is the most beautiful, and maybe that kind of self-assured quality is exactly what that means.
Because right now, with her face streaked in dust and grime, there was nothing to go on from her appearance alone.
“Rested enough?”
“Let’s head back!”
“Tomorrow…
is another new challenge!”
“Sensei always follows through on what he says!”
Sakura looked at the two of them and asked, full of energy, without a trace of fear.
“Huh?”
“Give me a bit longer — I still…
still can’t get up!”
Naruto strained with everything he had and still couldn’t pull himself off the ground.
Though he could feel he was close.
“But don’t you two…
don’t you find Sensei Tiange kind of…
scary?”
“Every time I see him, my heart just…
just starts hammering!”
Naruto looked curiously between the two of them, especially Sakura.
Because somehow she didn’t seem scared at all.
If anything, she seemed a little excited.
“I was scared at first too.
But after spending the whole day with him, I think Sensei is actually pretty great!”
Sakura’s smile was genuine.
Cold as he was, she really did feel like this sensei suited her.
“He’s not stingy at all, the things he taught me today, given who I am…”
“If it weren’t for him, I probably never would have touched any of that in my entire life!”
“Sasuke, what do you think?”
Naruto pursed his lips, clearly a little put out that Sakura didn’t share his feelings on the matter.
“He’s strong.”
“For me, that’s enough.”
“That assistant of his — I looked into it.”
“Konoha’s elite jonin: Kakashi Hatake.”
“Graduated to genin at five, chunin at seven, jonin at twelve.”
“Konoha’s famously stingy ninja, supposedly knows over a thousand jutsu.”
“And yet in front of Sensei, he couldn’t last a single move.”
“Sensei didn’t even move.
I’m not sure if that even counts as a move.”
“But most importantly — that man I intend to kill.”
“They were in the same class, and he was always crushed by Sensei in an instant.”
“Someone who’s been this powerful since childhood, with his guidance, I will complete my goal.”
Looking at the fierce obsession on Sasuke’s face, Naruto felt the life drain right out of him.
Those two…
that icy-faced sensei hadn’t even done anything to them!
“Let’s go.”
“I still can’t get up, hey!”
Sasuke and Sakura both pulled a face, but they took one side each and hauled Naruto to his feet anyway.
Under the glow of the setting sun, three long shadows stretched out behind them.
Early the next morning, Tiange brought all three to the mission hall to pick up an assignment.
A few glances was all it took.
He zeroed in on a kill-order mission.
C-Rank Mission: Eliminate the Mountain Bandits!
Near Nadeshiko Village, a gang of mountain bandits had been burning, killing, and looting, every evil imaginable.
Every merchant caravan that passed through suffered heavy losses.
Pushed past their limit, they’d come to Konoha and requested the gang be wiped out.
Mission Reward: 100,000 ryō.
Classic merchants, a C-rank mission posted with B-rank pay.
They must have really been pushed to their limit.
“This mission.”
“We’re taking it.”
Tiange pointed to the posting and addressed the staff member.
“Of course.
Please present your ninja credentials.”
Tiange handed them over.
The staff member went through the verification, and his expression shifted, he was starting to wonder if these were forged.
“My apologies!”
“Sir, per standard procedure, you are not eligible for this mission!”
“You and your students must begin with D-rank assignments!”
The staff member kept it polite.
He had his suspicions but didn’t voice them outright, found a tactful way to put it instead.
“I said.”
“We are taking this mission.”
Tiange had zero patience for this runaround.
He knew Konoha’s mission intake procedures perfectly well.
He was elite jonin level.
And this person was telling him it didn’t follow standard procedure?
Standard procedure?
It was there to be broken.
Besides, Tiange knew that wasn’t the real reason, and the realization irritated him.
Killing intent had already crept into his voice.
He was losing patience fast, all these rules and red tape made him want to cut straight through them.
“Sir…”
“Silence.”
“My apologies, Lord Tiange!”
“He’s new here and doesn’t know who you are!”
“You’d like to take this mission?”
“I’ll process the registration right now!”
The mission hall supervisor appeared just in time and felt the killing intent hanging in the air the moment he arrived.
He looked up, and nearly scared himself half to death.
The sword on Tiange’s back was already stirring restlessly.
He didn’t dare waste another second.
He snapped at the clueless staffer to shut it, that idiot, did he want the entire mission hall staff replaced?
Behind Tiange, the three stood waiting.
Sasuke was completely unfazed.
Sakura’s face had gone slightly pale, but she’d clearly already steeled herself well enough.
Naruto had it the worst.
His legs were shaking.
There it was again, that terrifying aura.
He still remembered the last time it appeared.
The cold-faced sensei had killed three people on the spot.
In the grip of that fear, Naruto watched as Tiange cast the staff member one cold look and slowly pulled the killing intent back.
Under Tiange’s gaze, the supervisor completed the registration with a trembling heart and handed over the mission certificate.
Tiange took it, turned, and walked out.
The four figures disappeared.
Only then did the supervisor let out a massive breath and wheeled on the staff member.
“Get the hell out.
You’re fired!”
The staff member’s face went blank with disbelief.
Then he laughed, cold and sharp.
“Fire me?
You dare?”
“I’m from the Sarutobi clan.
Who gave you the authority to fire me?”
“I’m the supervisor here.
That means I decide everything about the personnel in this place!”
“Not happy about it?”
“Then go tell the Hokage yourself!”
“This is the mission hall.
Not the Sarutobi clan’s private estate!”
The supervisor couldn’t have cared less about the Sarutobi clan, in that man’s eyes, they were all nothing.
“Just you wait!”
“I’ll have you out of that chair before the day is over!”
The Sarutobi clan staffer stormed out of the mission hall, red-faced and fuming.
