The final horn sounded.

The scoreboard locked in at 89–50.

Cameras swung hard between the two benches, drinking in the contrast.

On one side Rex had an arm draped over Paul George’s shoulders while Kevin Minusnett bounced around them, trading chest bumps and loud laughter.

On the other, Nikola Vučević had a white towel pressed over his entire face.

His shoulders sagged.

Every line of his body screamed defeat.

It took him a long time to lower the towel.

When he finally did, he walked straight over to Rex.

“You entering the draft this year?” Rex raised an eyebrow, voice casual.

“Why?

You got plans?” Vučević gave a tired, bitter smile.

All the earlier arrogance was gone.

“After tonight my stock is going to drop.

If you’re declaring, I’m waiting a year.

I’ll take the long way around.” Rex stared at him for a second, half amused, half speechless.

Avoid the sharp edge by sitting out an entire draft cycle.

That was a new one.

Somewhere in the future a certain vice-GOAT who spent years obsessing over “decide 1-2-3-4” would have nodded in professional respect and immediately started drafting a “staggered championship” master plan.

“I’m declaring,” Rex said.

He clapped Vučević lightly on the back.

“Smart move.

Good luck next year.” The mixed zone was pure chaos.

ESPN reporters had Steve Cleveland backed against the interview board.

Every question was about one man.

“Coach, congratulations on the blowout.

Rex just posted the first block triple-double in March Madness history.

Were you surprised?” Cleveland leaned against the backdrop, completely at ease.

“Surprised?

Not even a little.

I’m proud of him.

And I’m especially grateful the backboard he demolished tonight comes out of the Dallas arena budget instead of Fresno State’s.

Very generous of the Mavericks.” Another reporter jumped on the real mystery.

“He’s this dominant.

Half a game is enough to take over.

So why did we never see him during the regular season?” Cleveland tipped his head back and laughed.

“Have you ever seen two armies line up for war and open the battle by dropping an atomic bomb?” The press corps got it immediately.

Laughter rolled through the group.

Exactly.

The little island nation hadn’t known what an atomic bomb was either—until two of them arrived.

Rex was Fresno’s nuclear option.

You don’t show that card in November.

In the quiet tunnel leading to the locker rooms, Rex and Paul George walked side by side.

Two tall figures stepped out of the shadows and blocked their path.

Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd had been waiting.

“Rex!

Congrats on the next round,” Kidd said first, eyes bright with genuine heat.

“Your paint dominance just conquered everyone in Dallas.” Nowitzki’s tone was warmer, almost playful.

“Hell of a game.

Especially the demolition work.

Very professional.

Any interest in coming to Dallas next year and helping us keep the rims in one piece?” Neither man bothered with subtlety.

The olive branch was out in the open.

“If you declare, the door in Dallas is always open.” “Jason and I would love to play alongside you.” Rex smiled politely, nodded, offered a few non-committal lines, and kept walking with George.

Once they were clear, Paul grabbed his arm, eyes wide.

“What the actual fuck, Rex?

That was Dirk Nowitzki.

Current face of the league.

He just recruited you in person and you looked like somebody offered you a free sandwich.” Rex never broke stride.

A short, dry laugh escaped him.

“Pass.

I have zero interest in joining a team like Dallas.” Past-life memory was crystal clear.

This was March 2010.

The next NBA season—2010-11—would be the year the aging Mavericks, led by a single-core Nowitzki, somehow clawed past the peak Heatles from an 0-2 hole and took the title.

Widely regarded as the highest-quality championship of the twenty-first century.

Finals MVP for Dirk, no argument.

Dallas was a finished product.

A ready-made contender.

Joining them would mean riding coattails.

Adding the final piece to someone else’s puzzle.

Rex had never been built for that.

That same night the entire American sports media lost its mind.

ESPN’s front page locked in a single headline: **Demolition Man Arrives — Beyond Peak Shaq, the New Tyrant of the NCAA Paint Is Born** TNT Sports: **39-22-10 Historic Triple-Double!

Vučević Waves the White Flag — Every Frontcourt in the League Just Started Sweating** Woj’s official feed dropped an urgent update: multiple NBA general managers had already spent the night calling around, trying to gauge whether Rex would declare.

Two March Madness games had been enough to set his draft stock in stone.

The one-night-wonder doubts were dead.

Across the country, fans accepted the new truth: a superstar capable of rewriting the league’s power structure had just stepped onto the stage.

The heat didn’t stop at the Pacific.

sports portals and basketball homepages swapped every banner for high-resolution stills of Rex snapping the rim, swatting balls into the stands, and bodying Vučević into the floor.

On Hupu’s basketball board more than a dozen threads hit the top overnight, each exploding past a hundred thousand views in hours.

The loudest title screamed: **Non-Human Physical Tools!

Monster Snaps an NBA-Grade Rim and Embarrasses Europe’s Best Center** At first a lot of fans who only followed traditional NBA names scrolled past in confusion.

*Who the hell is Rex Valen?

Name sounds like an anime protagonist.* *UC Shock Department interns jump to Hupu now?

Snapping a rim?

Even novels don’t write this shit.* *Another -player clickbait post.

Seen it a hundred times.* They had been burned by hype headlines before.

Most assumed the thread was pure fabrication.

Then they opened the high-definition GIFs, the original English broadcast audio, and the raw video of the backboard exploding.

The entire board went silent for a few seconds.

Then the comments detonated.

*Holy shit… he actually broke a reinforced rim?* *He made a first-round center look like he wanted to quit basketball.

Is this real life or a 2K mod?* *I came in here to call the title exaggerated.

I’m apologizing.

The title was understated.* *Shaq’s successor confirmed.

Draft this kid and watch every frontcourt in the league start praying.* In a single night, on both sides of the ocean, the name Rex Valen stopped being a rumor and became legend.
