Perhaps the night sky was too beautiful, or perhaps Wen Rong’s tender gaze made it hard for her to control her feelings.

Xia Weige reached out and hooked her fingers around Wen Rong’s. It wasn’t a simple touch; her fingers interlocked with Wen Rong’s knuckles, cautious yet tightly intertwined.

She felt a wave of heat rising through her body, a scorching temperature that threatened to consume her.Full novel: Not Getting Back Together Really Makes It Hard to End Things Well — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Even though a cold breeze was sweeping over them, and the post-rain chill was setting in, Xia Weige felt as if she were in the height of summer, back in the old, small rental room they once shared.

Stifling, restless.

She lifted her eyes, her luminous gaze filled with anticipation, meeting Wen Rong’s affectionate eyes.

Her fingers hooked onto hers, her lips slightly parted.

They had once lain in the same position in that old rental room, on that bed. She remembered their awkward first time, she remembered how excited and happy she was when Wen Rong leaned in to kiss her.

She had been hooking Wen Rong’s fingers in the same way, trembling with nervousness, yet eagerly raising her head to receive the kiss.

Xia Weige softly exhaled, the warm, moist breath perceptible even to herself. She trembled, wanting to move closer to Wen Rong.

The dark surroundings, illuminated only by a few faint lights, brought back the image of Wen Rong’s emotional face from the past.

There was a desire in those gentle eyes that Xia Weige couldn’t ignore, and that usually calm and soft face would show a fierce possessiveness.

At the time, a smile still lingered on Wen Rong’s lips, but the moisture left on her red lips from kissing Xia Weige made her look particularly sensual.

Xia Weige inhaled their intertwined breaths. Their first intimate moment made her timid, and everything was led by Wen Rong.

Wen Rong kissed her lips, and even when she gradually felt suffocated from not knowing how to breathe, she wouldn’t ask her to stop; Wen Rong kissed her eyes, and though she was very ticklish, she still fluttered her lashes in compliance.

Even when Wen Rong’s actions caused her discomfort, she merely clenched her fists, repeatedly sobbing as she endured.

Now, Xia Weige looked at Wen Rong, who was not aroused, yet Xia Weige herself was overwhelmed with emotion.

Xia Weige’s fingers twitched, wanting to wrap around Wen Rong’s waist, but as soon as she moved, Wen Rong grabbed her wrist.

Perhaps fearing rejection, she instinctively tried to pull away, but her wrist remained firmly held.

Xia Weige bit her lip, her heart pounding. She looked at Wen Rong, her body feeling even hotter.

“You’re running a temperature,” Wen Rong’s voice was certain.

Xia Weige lowered her head, feeling the embarrassment of being discovered by Wen Rong, yet also excited by it.

She carefully raised her eyes, only to see Wen Rong sit up, then lean over to her, placing a finger on her forehead, her brows slightly furrowed.

“Get up quickly, you have a fever, Xia Weige.”

Listening to her voice, Xia Weige felt a little disoriented. She hadn’t realized she was running a fever; her body was hot because of her thoughts.

But she subconsciously didn’t want to refute the worried tone in Wen Rong’s voice, and she obediently sat up with the help of the pulling force.

As she sat up, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her, and she had to be supported by Wen Rong to prevent her from falling.

“Ah…” Xia Weige raised her hand to touch her forehead. The temperature was distinctly higher than normal, and only then did she finally realize she was indeed running a fever.

Wen Rong helped her into the tent, then called the staff. Having to trouble everyone so late made Xia Weige very annoyed.

Moreover, there were no clinics or hospitals nearby. The convenience store halfway up the mountain sold some common medicines, but it was already closed.

Wen Rong wanted to drive down the mountain to take her to the hospital, but Xia Weige strongly refused.

She shook her head, biting her lip tightly. Her head was foggy, yet no matter how much Wen Rong tried to persuade her, she wouldn’t budge.

Wen Rong gazed at her. Her face was slightly flushed from the fever, her teeth were biting her lip in a stubborn and aggrieved expression. Sitting in the chair, she looked very well-behaved, yet her actions were so willful.

“Why won’t you go?” Wen Rong knew Xia Weige wasn’t a reckless person. After trying to persuade her for a while and seeing Xia Weige’s persistence, she realized the other party might have other reasons.

Xia Weige lowered her head, but slightly lifted her eyelids, remaining stubborn and unwilling to leave this place.

When Wen Rong asked for her reason, she remained silent for a long time before finally answering softly, “I don’t want to end this date.”

If they went down the mountain to the hospital now, considering her health condition, it was highly likely that the date would be cut short, and she didn’t want that.

Xia Weige cherished this date highly. Even though it was arranged by the production team, it was a rare opportunity for prolonged time together since she and Wen Rong had reunited.

It was as if she was convinced that something would happen between them, and she wanted to use this chance to get closer to Wen Rong.

She yearned to spend time with Wen Rong so much, even obsessively believing that she only had a slight relapse of a cold and would be fine after taking some medicine and sleeping.

Wen Rong, having heard her explanation, let out a deep sigh and stared at her for a long time without speaking.

“It’s nothing serious. Tomorrow, I still want to take you to see the sea of flowers. You once said you wanted to see a mountainside covered in flowers…” Xia Weige was a little dizzy and couldn’t gauge Wen Rong’s emotions. She could only continue talking, trying to persuade Wen Rong to agree to stay.

But before she could finish, Wen Rong interrupted.

“Some things, once they’re over, they’re over.” Wen Rong paused after saying this, stopping for a moment before adding, “Some people, once missed, are missed.”

She finished speaking and gently bit her lip, her expression not one of relief.

But in Xia Weige’s eyes, she spoke so clearly and resolutely, staring into Xia Weige’s eyes, saying every word clearly.

Xia Weige was forced to meet her gaze, her eyes turning red.

Xia Weige knew Wen Rong hadn’t forgiven her, but they had been getting along so well lately, and Wen Rong had even accepted her invitation for this date.

The fire was burning in the tent, and the stove was very effective, making the whole tent warm, but Xia Weige felt cold right now.

She felt her entire body becoming stiff, and her limbs were numb.

She clenched her lips tightly, and her hands began to hurt uncontrollably.

An agonizing, stabbing pain, as if a sharp thorn was being driven into her heart.

The program’s accompanying director also came in to persuade Xia Weige. Xia Weige numbly nodded, no longer resisting.

She suppressed the pain, stood up with the staff, and then suddenly stopped outside the tent, as if making a final struggle, turning sideways to look sadly at Wen Rong.

“If that’s the case, why did you agree to this date, Jie-jie (Sister)?”

Her eyes were red as she looked over. Wen Rong was at a loss for how to answer and remained silent for a long time.

“Perhaps out of pity for me,” Xia Weige waited for a long time but received no answer. She felt like she understood something, and she scoffed at herself, rationalizing, “Jie-jie is always so gentle.”

She finished speaking and lowered her head. Her fingers trembled uncontrollably. She clenched her hands tightly, the pain so intense that even her tightly gritted teeth couldn’t suppress a moan.

This subtle cry of pain was caught by Wen Rong. Wen Rong instinctively took a step toward Xia Weige, her face showing concern, but then abruptly paused because of what Xia Weige had just said.

Xia Weige saw it and could no longer control herself, immediately turning away so Wen Rong wouldn’t see the tears uncontrollably falling.

She cried silently while walking forward.

It felt as if everything before her had turned gray, with not a trace of light to be seen.

It turned out that the other person’s gentleness could also be so cruel.
