Staring at the two red lines on the pregnancy test, Reyna unconsciously rested a hand on her flat stomach.
She shakily placed the stick next to the other ones she had used to ensure that this wasn’t a dream or hallucination.
All of them displayed two red lines, and she marveled at the thought of life growing inside her.
Just thinking of what it took to conceive this miraculous child brought tears to her eyes.
It had taken five long years, enduring all kinds of ridicule and judgment from everyone around her, but she was finally pregnant.
The long-awaited child had arrived, and she couldn’t wait to tell Grey the good news.
Banging on the bathroom door caused her to drop her smile as she heard someone say, “Hurry up.
What’s taking you so long in there?
It’s not like there’s anything that can fix the ugly face of yours.” Instinctively, she touched her face at her cruel sister’s words and looked into the mirror.
A woman with wavy, burgundy red hair reaching her midback and hazel eyes stared right back at her.
Everyone had always remarked that she didn’t suit Grey and bemoaned how unfortunate it was that he had her for a wife.
The only one who never insulted her looks was her husband, but he also never complimented them either.
“Reyna!” Dolores shrieked as she banged on the door again.
“I’m coming,” Reyna said as she hid away the test results so she could show them to Grey.
As soon as she opened the door, Dolores shoved her to the side, muttering curses under her breath.
Knowing that speaking up against her sister would only bring more trouble, she kept her mouth shut.
Stepping into her bedroom, she wrinkled her nose in disgust at the sight of the mess Dolores had left.
“She could at least clean up after herself,” she muttered as she picked up the dirty clothes strewn about.
Normally, the servants were supposed to do the cleaning, but they have never once entered her room other than to mock her.
None of them acknowledged her as the mistress of the house.
After tidying up the place, she wiped the sweat off her face and considered what she should do next.
Her phone suddenly buzzed, and she immediately pulled it out of her pocket, as there was only one thing it could be: Grey was returning from patrol.
As she stared at the simple and curt message about how he was going to be there in ten minutes, a soft smile crept up her face.
She texted back to let him know that she would be waiting and quickly changed into something nicer.
A chocolate brown dress her husband had picked out for her.
Unfortunately, that’s when Dolores made her appearance, and she demanded, “What are you doing?” Reyna couldn’t help freezing, expecting her sister to cause more trouble for her.
Was she going to order her around again and make it so she would be late to greet her husband?
Without waiting for an answer, her sister continued, “You know those clothes don’t suit you at all.
The only clothes that fit you are rags.” With a cackle and a wave, she sauntered out of the room while grabbing her bag.
Ignoring her words, Reyna followed after her and headed towards the front door to greet Grey.
However, in her haste, she didn’t notice a servant holding their foot out, causing her to trip and skid across the carpet.
With her face in the carpet, she could hear the servants laugh at her expense.
She should have seen it coming.
Of course they would want to embarrass her in front of her husband.
They were probably hoping that Grey would become too disgusted with her and divorce her.
With a sigh, she quietly stood up on her own and dusted her clothes while inspecting for injuries.
Fortunately, she was only a little ruffled up and smoothed out her clothes so she wouldn’t look like a complete mess when Grey returned.
Reyna wished she could use this fact to put a stop to it altogether, but the servants had served the Villegas family for years and had been careful with their bullying.
Even the tripping just now didn’t leave a scratch on her, and they could just claim it was an accident or that she was just clumsy.
Unless she presented undeniable proof, she couldn’t do anything about it, and even then, it might be waved off.
His parents and grandparents had made it clear not to bother him about such nonsense.
Continuing on her way, she spotted Grey standing at the entrance, speaking to another man.
As she was about to run to him, she didn’t expect Dolores to throw herself at him.
She froze at the sight as her mouth dropped open.
When she found her voice, she yelled, “What do you think you’re doing?” It would have been one thing if they were close siblings and that her husband treated Dolores like a sister.
However, the way she was embracing him was anything but platonic.
Dolores was practically hanging off him like she was his lover, pressing her entire body into him to the point it looked as if she were trying to become one with him.
She smirked.
“Do you really think you should talk to me like that?” Her audacity dumbfounded her, and she turned to Grey to do something, but he only frowned.
Confused why her husband didn’t immediately side with her, she watched in confusion as everyone gathered to see what was going on.
“Tell her, Grey,” Dolores said as she caressed the front of his chest and leaned into him.
Her fists clenched at the provocative sight.
Reyna was tempted to go up to Dolores, grab her by the hair, and drag her from her husband, but she held back as the lessons that had been drilled into her kicked in.
Grey wrapped a hand around Dolores’s waist and stared Reyna directly in the eyes as he said, “I will be marrying Dolores.”
