“To the hospital!”
With that, Jiang Mingzhou scooped her up and strode quickly toward the car. Jiang Xian picked up the scattered items on the ground and immediately followed.
The delivery guy was utterly confused and took a couple of steps forward.
“You go about your business. We’ll handle this, and we won’t cause you any trouble. Don’t make things complicated either.”
Having said that, Jiang Xian ran and got into the car.
The driver had already floored the accelerator, yet he could still hear the boss’s impatient urging, “Drive faster!”
Jiang Mingzhou looked down. She was in his arms now, and he had finally touched her this closely. He never imagined it would happen under these circumstances.
He felt her forehead—it was so hot it almost burned his hand. He reached out to cool her down, only then realizing that this pretty little face was smaller than his own palm.
Following the curve of her face, he gently pinched her chin. The angle of her jaw didn’t exceed 80 degrees, and it felt especially smooth to the touch. How could anyone have such a small face?
Looking at An Mengyue in his arms, her eyes tightly shut, her breathing heavy, her long, curled lashes occasionally trembling slightly, with traces of tears still on her cheeks.
This little kitten—why was she crying again?
His gaze drifted downward. From this angle, he could clearly see the view of her chest. She happened to be wearing a low-cut slip dress. He wasn’t trying to take advantage of her, so he immediately averted his eyes.
“Where are her clothes?”
“President Jiang, her clothes are still wet…”
“What?”
Hearing this, he reached out and touched her dress. Sure enough, the fabric was still damp with moisture and hadn’t dried.
He let her lean against his arm, freed his other hand to unbutton his suit jacket, and gently draped it over her.
“Why haven’t we arrived yet? Why is she so hot?”
“President Jiang, we’re almost there!”
He felt the person in his arms stir. Watching her brow furrow slightly, she tried to open her eyes but couldn’t, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye, a sob caught in her throat.
She was still crying. Who the hell made her so upset?
Jiang Mingzhou immediately leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, holding her close in his arms, and whispered softly, “It’s alright, don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Emergency Department
“The patient is currently in a hyperthermic syncope. There are no external injuries, but her blood sugar and blood pressure are both very low. It’s possible she’s suffering from extreme fatigue or emotional agitation.”
…
“The patient is currently on her period, so her immunity is indeed somewhat lower. There’s nothing serious—she just needs proper rest and observation for a few days.”
Back in the hospital room, watching An Mengyue lying in bed with calm, steady breathing, sleeping peacefully, Jiang Mingzhou stepped forward and gently stroked her face.
Seeing this, Jiang Xian immediately turned and left, quietly closing the door behind him.
His slender fingers pinched her little cheek again, then traced along the curve to caress her chin. He liked this texture and this angle.
She really was like a little kitten.
The man leaned in to tuck her blanket properly, his gaze landing on her slightly parted red lips. He felt his own breathing grow heavier, then jolted himself upright, barely suppressing the urge to kiss her.
Jiang Mingzhou sat back against the sofa, waiting until her IV drip was finished. Only after arranging for a nurse did he leave the hospital.
When An Mengyue opened her eyes, her whole body ached—even her muscles hurt. The air was filled with the smell of disinfectant. She turned her head and looked around, only to see a strange woman sitting at the foot of the bed.
“Who are you? Where is this?”
“Little sister, you’re awake. This is the hospital—you fainted. I’m a nurse here. Can you sit up?”
Hospital?
She immediately propped herself up on her elbows, trying to sit up in bed. The nurse quickly stepped forward to help, murmuring, “Slow down, slow down.”
Sitting up in bed, she began to recall the specifics of last night.
She vaguely remembered feeling terrible and dizzy by the time she reached the entrance of her neighborhood.
Then she suddenly received a voice call from Boss Cool, and her emotions collapsed. It was as if she wanted to pin all her negative feelings on him—no matter how many times he called, she hung up each one. On the way, she seemed to have been knocked down by something, and then she couldn’t remember anything else.
It wasn’t that she remembered nothing at all—it seemed someone had brought her to the hospital, and it was a man.
“Auntie, do you know who brought me to the hospital?”
“This… they left a phone number.”
Taking the piece of paper the nurse handed her, An Mengyue turned and grabbed her phone from the table. The screen had obvious cracks, and there were a flood of messages on it now.
The police had already gone to the company to pull surveillance footage.
Her boss, the operations manager, Zhu Wenwen, and Shark had all sent messages asking about what happened.
Zhu Wenwen had even called many times, all unanswered.
She tapped open the chat with mz—it was still stuck at last night, with no new messages.
He must really be angry.
A flicker passed through An Mengyue’s eyes as she exited the WeChat interface.
She dialed the number on the paper directly. The call was picked up quickly, and she cleared her throat before speaking: “Hello, I’m the one you—”
“Awake?”
That familiar voice—deep and magnetic. Who else could it be but Boss Cool?
An Mengyue felt a mix of panic and surprise. “You? Are you Boss Cool?”
“So you do remember me.” His voice was cold, with little emotion detectable.
A wave of grievance surged up in her chest. Her eyes grew hot and her nose stuffed up. “You… you’re the one who brought me to the hospital?”
“Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
…A long silence. She couldn’t answer that question.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Why was this man so harsh!
An Mengyue burst into tears, full of grievance, sobbing, “You’re so mean…”
…
Jiang Mingzhou immediately switched to a gentler tone. “I’m not being mean to you.”
“Don’t cry. Then answer my video call, let me see you.”
An Mengyue was still sniffling and let out a soft “Mm.”
She drew her knees up, buried her face in the blanket, and leaned back against the bed. The nurse had already gone to buy lunch, and in the private ward, no one would disturb them.
This was their first video call. She kept her face buried in the blanket, and Boss Cool’s side showed no picture.
“Feeling better?”
She nodded with red-rimmed eyes, then shook her head, staring straight at the camera.
“Let’s take it one thing at a time. I’ll ask, and you answer.”
“Why did you ignore me?”
“It was you who ignored me… wuwuwu.”
After saying that, she cried even harder, as if trying to reclaim all the coldness of the past few days.
Jiang Mingzhou: …
“It was you who ignored me, but I didn’t dare go find you. I didn’t want to disturb your life.”
“What do you mean?”
An Mengyue picked up a tissue to wipe her tears, steadied her emotions, and said, “You have your own life. If you chose to leave, I definitely wouldn’t interfere. The fact that you didn’t reach out made your intentions pretty clear.”
Not knowing why her mind worked that way, Jiang Mingzhou immediately stated his view, “It’s because I felt you no longer needed me, and you were unusually cold toward me, so naturally I stopped showing up.”
“So can you tell me why your attitude changed so drastically?”
“Did I? I don’t know either. My head’s been a mess lately, and I don’t know how to adjust this relationship and handle things…”
“Hm?”
Seeing her earnest expression, Jiang Mingzhou truly didn’t understand. He watched as she took a deep breath and pressed the tissue firmly against her eyes.
“Actually, I wanted to come find you. Every time something happens in my life, I want to share it with you, but that’s not right of me—I can’t be too dependent on you.”
Hearing this, his brows finally relaxed.
