The faint smell of burning tallow filled the quiet workshop as the cobbler's needle pulled steadily through the thick leather. Outside, the distant hum of Oakhaven continued, but inside, time seemed to slow to a peaceful crawl.

"You aren't from around these parts, are you?" the old man asked, not looking up from his work. "The clothes, the way you carry yourself... you look like someone who belongs in the upper spires, not down here in the mud."

Adam smiled faintly, resting his hands on his knees. "I come from very far away. A place that has long since been forgotten."Full novel: Omniarch — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The cobbler chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. "Ah, an traveler seeking a quiet life. I used to dream of traveling when I was young. Thought I'd join a merchant guild, cross the inner seas, see the floating cities of the northern archons." He paused, setting his wooden mallet down to inspect the sole of the boot. "Then life happened. A shop to run, a family to feed, a back that started aching whenever the rain rolled in. Suddenly, sixty years passed by in the blink of an eye."

"Do you regret it?" Adam asked softly. "Never leaving this room? Never seeing the grand expanses of the world?"

The old man stopped. He looked at his worn, calloused hands, then at the half-finished boot sitting on his bench. A quiet warmth settled in his tired eyes.

"Sometimes," he admitted. "When the nights are cold and my joints ache. But then I remember the thousands of feet my boots have protected. Children running through the snow, workers marching to the fields, soldiers returning home to their families. I didn't conquer empires or tame grand beasts, traveler. But I gave people something sturdy to stand on. That's enough for me."

Adam looked at the old man, feeling the fleeting, fragile pulse of his soul. To the gods who ruled the higher planes, this man was a speck of dust, destined to dissolve into the flow of time within a few short years. Yet here he sat, finding absolute contentment in the simple act of creation and service.

Mortals, Adam thought, are extraordinary in their brevity.

"It is a noble craft," Adam said quietly.

He stood up from the wooden stool. Reaching out, he touched the edge of the cobbler's rough workbench. He didn't unleash a grand display of magic, nor did he alter the fabric of space. Instead, with a micro-thread of primordial vitality, he gently brushed against the old man's fading life force.

The dull pain in the cobbler's spine vanished instantly. The cloudiness in his aging eyes cleared, revealing sharp, vibrant vision he hadn't possessed in twenty years. His lungs expanded, filling with clear, deep air. He didn't gain immortality, nor did he become a powerful cultivator Adam simply granted him a full, painless remainder of his mortal lifespan.

The old man blinked, looking around the room in absolute bewilderment. He raised his hands, flexing his fingers without a single trace of stiffness. "What... what in the world...?"

When he turned to look at the corner, the dark-haired traveler was already gone.

Outside, Adam walked into the cool night air of the alleyway. He looked up past the crooked rooftops, past the glowing airships, straight toward the brilliant expanse of the double-moon sky.

He had tasted their food, walked their streets, and listened to the quiet heartbeats of their humblest lives. The weariness of his eons-long slumber was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, steady resolve. The world was vast, filled with endless stories waiting to be witnessed.

Adam stepped forward into the shadows of the alley, his figure vanishing like smoke on the wind as he set off toward the distant, uncharted horizons of this new realm.
