Adam stepped over the threshold into the abyssal darkness of the temple. Behind him, the spectral guardian slowly faded into nothingness, freed from its eons of duty by the total collapse of the binding array.
Inside, the air was cold, dry, and heavy with the scent of ancient dust and stagnant, decaying magic. The moment Adam's boots touched the polished obsidian floor, rows of blue-flamed torches ignited along the walls in a rapid sequence, illuminating a vast, cavernous hall.
Supported by hundreds of towering pillars carved in the likeness of weeping angels, the hall stretched far into the subterranean depths. Along the walls were elaborate murals depicting the rise and fall of an ancient empire battles fought across star systems, grand armadas of flying warships, and a crowned figure wielding a golden spear against terrifying, shadowy leviathans from the void.
Adam walked slowly along the corridor, examining the artwork with idle interest.
"They fought so fiercely for a fleeting moment in time," he mused aloud, his soft voice echoing down the silent hall. "Building monuments to their pride, only for the jungle to swallow them whole."
At the far end of the grand hall stood an elevated dais. Atop it rested a massive sarcophagus carved from a single block of deep crimson crystal. Inside, visible through the translucent stone, lay a figure wrapped in golden ceremonial robes, holding a orb that pulsed with a faint, dying ember of divine authority.
Suddenly, the air inside the chamber grew unnaturally cold.
The crimson crystal sarcophagus shattered with a deafening CRASH!
Shards of red glass flew across the room like shrapnel as a horrific, withered hand clawed its way out. The corpse within sat upright, its hollow eye sockets flaring with two burning, golden pinpricks of undead hatred. It was the Sun-King himself, reduced to a powerful lich king after eons of dark cultivation beneath the earth.
"Who dares disturb my slumber?!" the undead monarch shrieked, a wave of horrific necrotic energy erupting from its frame and blackening the obsidian pillars. "I am the Eternal Sun! I conquered the skies!"
The lich raised its withered staff, summoning a localized storm of black solar fire that roared down the aisle directly toward Adam, consuming the very atmosphere in its path.
Adam didn't pause his stride. As the wave of destruction rushed toward him, he simply took a deep breath and exhaled gently.
PFFFT.
The catastrophic storm of necrotic fire was blown away like smoke from an extinguished candle.
The undead king froze mid-cast, its hollow sockets widening in absolute shock. It tried to channel its boundless mana once more, but as it looked closer at the lone figure walking toward the dais, a primal, instinctual terror took hold of its soul.
It saw no aura surrounding Adam. No mana, no divine grace, no mortal spirit. It saw only the endless, boundless void an ancient, primordial presence that made its entire empire look like a tiny drop of water in an infinite ocean.
Adam reached the foot of the dais and looked up at the trembling lich king.
"You fought against time and lost," Adam said softly, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Rest now."
He reached out and gently pressed two fingers against the crown of the undead king's skull.
In an instant, the necrotic magic sustaining the creature's corpse evaporated. The golden fire in its eyes went out, replaced by a profound, blissful peace. The ancient monarch's body slowly collapsed into a pile of fine white ash, settling quietly upon the broken crystal of its tomb.
Adam turned back toward the entrance of the temple, leaving the silent tomb behind as he stepped out into the emerald light of the forest once more.
