Maya held the flash drive so tight her fingers hurt.

Damian drove fast through the dark streets, checking the mirrors every few seconds.

The shot they had heard still rang in her ears.Full novel: ONE NIGHT STAND WITH MY STEPBROTHER — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Rachel had disappeared between the storage units.

The two men had gone after her.

“We need to see what’s on this,” Damian said.

His voice was steady but low.

“Before they find us.” They went to a cheap motel on the other side of the city.

Cash only.

No names.

Damian locked the door, pulled the curtains, and set his laptop on the small table.

Maya plugged in the drive.

Her hands were still shaking.

Folders opened on the screen.

Patient lists.

Dates.

Notes written in short, cold language.

Maya scrolled and felt her stomach turn.

There were names of other young women.

Addresses.

Procedure codes.

And next to some of them, small marks that meant “incomplete – follow-up required.” Her own name was there.

The date of the abortion.

A note that said residual tissue left intentionally.

Recommended for second contact.

Family connection flagged.

High value.

Damian leaned closer.

“They chose you on purpose.” Maya’s throat felt tight.

The memory of the clinic came back hard — the cold room, the paper gown, the machine sound, the blood, the empty feeling afterward.

It had never been a mistake.

They had left the pregnancy inside her so they could keep control and sell more later.

She kept scrolling.

Then she stopped.

There was another folder labeled “Buyers.” Inside were payment records and short descriptions.

Private investigators.

Lawyers.

Corporate security teams.

One name repeated more than the others over the past two years.

Richard’s company.

Damian stared at the screen.

His face went pale.

“My dad’s company bought information from them.

More than once.” Maya looked at him.

“Did he know what they were doing to people?” “I don’t know.” Damian’s voice was rough.

“But he used them.

That means he knows how they work.” The twist sat heavy between them.

The clinic had not only targeted Maya because of the family name.

Richard’s side of the family had already been a customer.

The same system that left her pregnancy unfinished had been paid for by people close to Damian.

Maya closed the laptop.

She felt sick and angry and tired all at once.

Damian pulled her into his arms.

For a moment they just stood there in the middle of the small motel room.

Then the need rose the way it always did when everything felt like it was falling apart.

Damian kissed her hard.

Maya kissed him back harder.

Clothes came off fast.

He pushed her onto the bed and thrust into her without waiting.

It was rough and deep and full of everything they could not say.

Maya wrapped her legs around him and held on.

Every thrust felt like he was trying to remind her she was still his, still here, still alive.

She came with a broken sound, face pressed against his shoulder.

Damian followed soon after, burying himself deep and staying there while they both breathed hard.

Afterward they lay side by side in the dark.

“We can’t give the drive back,” Maya said.

“If we do, they win.

And they still have more on us.” Damian nodded.

“We use it.

We find out exactly who bought what.

And we protect your mother.” Maya’s phone buzzed on the nightstand.

A new message from the same unknown number that had threatened her mother’s hospital records.

**You have twelve hours.

Return the drive or the next leak includes full hospital charts, treatment details, and the cancer diagnosis.

The mother will not survive that kind of public stress.

We know which room she is in.** Maya sat up.

“They know the room number.” Damian grabbed the phone.

“They’re watching the hospital.” Before they could decide what to do, another message came in.

This one was different.

It came from Rachel’s number — the one she had used earlier.

**I’m still alive.

The men who came were not clinic security.

They work for one of the buyers.

A private group that pays extra for family secrets involving money and inheritance.

They want the drive because it has their names on it too.

Do not go back to the hospital alone.

They are already there.** Maya’s blood ran cold.

The clinic agenda was bigger than they had thought.

It was not just Dr.

Vargas and a few staff selling tips.

There were organized buyers who sent people with guns when their names were at risk.

Damian stood up and started pulling his clothes back on.

“We have to get to your mother before they do.” Maya dressed quickly.

The flash drive went into her pocket.

As they reached the motel door, her phone lit up one more time.

A photo this time.

It showed the hospital hallway outside her mother’s room.

A man in a dark jacket stood near the door, looking straight at the camera like he knew they would see it.

The message under the photo was short.

Too late.
