Maya sat in the back of the taxi with the phone heavy in her hand.

The notification still sat on the screen.

This one is not about him.* She had not opened it yet.

The city moved past the window in streaks of light.

Her body felt sore and empty from the second procedure.

Every few minutes a dull cramp reminded her of what she had done alone.

The video of Damian with the other woman kept replaying in her head whether she wanted it to or not.

His hands.

Her mouth.

The unlocked door.

The driver glanced at her again.

“Are you sure you’re all right?

You look pale.” “I’m fine,” Maya said.

“Just keep driving.” She did not know where she was going.

Hotel keys were still in her bag from the room she had taken earlier, but the idea of sitting alone with the video and the new file made the walls feel too close.

She needed to keep moving.

After ten more minutes she could not wait any longer.

She opened the file.

It was a short folder of images and one audio clip.

The first image was a screenshot of a bank transfer.

A large amount of money moved from an account she did not recognize into an account labeled with the same private clinic she had used the day before for the second abortion.

The date was two days before she had even contacted them.

Someone had paid the clinic in advance.

The second image was a copy of an internal note from that same private clinic.

Her name was on it.

Next to the name was a line that read: *Client flagged by previous provider network.

Proceed with caution.

Secondary payment already cleared.* Maya’s mouth went dry.

The private doctor she had chosen for secrecy had already been paid by someone else before she arrived.

The second abortion had not been as secret as she thought.

The audio clip was only fourteen seconds long.

A woman’s voice, calm and slightly distorted.

“She’ll come to you when she’s desperate enough.

When she does, finish it cleanly.

The previous incomplete work left enough risk.

If she bleeds too much, let the hospital handle the rest.

Payment will clear once confirmation is received.” The voice was not Dr.

Vargas.

It was not her mother.

It was not the woman from the hotel.

Maya did not recognize it at all.

She played it again.

The words “previous incomplete work” sat in her chest like a stone.

Someone had known she would try a second time.

Someone had prepared the clinic.

Someone had treated her body like a problem that needed a final solution.

The taxi stopped at a red light.

Maya looked up and realized she had not given a real destination.

The driver was waiting.

“Anywhere quiet,” she said.

“A twenty-four-hour place.

Coffee.” He nodded and turned toward a diner he knew.

Maya sat with the phone in both hands.

The empty feeling inside her had a new shape now.

It was not only the pregnancy that was gone.

It was the last belief that any choice she made could stay hers alone.

At the diner she took a corner booth and ordered water.

She could not face food.

She read the transfer record again.

The account that had sent the money was listed only as a numbered holding company.

No name.

No obvious link to Richard or her mother.

That absence felt deliberate.

Her phone buzzed.

The unknown number again.

*Now you see the second clinic was never neutral.

The question is who wanted the pregnancy gone badly enough to pay in advance.* Maya typed back.

*Was it Richard?* No answer.

*Was it my mother?* Still nothing.

*Who are you?* The reply took almost a minute.

*Someone who has been watching the payments longer than you have.

The staged photos of Damian were only one part.

The second clinic was another.

There is a third part you have not seen yet.* Maya’s hands went cold.

She looked around the diner.

A truck driver at the counter.

A nurse in scrubs eating pie.

A couple arguing quietly near the window.

No one seemed to be watching her.

That did not mean no one was.

She paid for the water and left.

Outside she started walking without a clear direction.

The night air helped a little.

The cramps were still there, but the bleeding had not gotten worse.

She kept one hand near her phone and the other in her pocket around the hotel key she still carried.

A car slowed beside her.

She tensed until she saw it was only a rideshare looking for an address.

She shook her head and kept walking.

Her phone lit up once more.

This time the message carried no text, only a location pin and a time.

*Midnight.

The old park near your mother’s house.

Come alone if you want the third part.

If you bring Damian, the file disappears and the payments continue.* Maya stopped under a streetlight and stared at the pin.

The same park where her mother had once confronted her about the first clinic.

The place felt loaded with every bad decision and every lie that had followed.

She did not know who would be waiting.

The voice on the audio had been a woman, but the messages had no gender she could trust.

It could be the hotel woman switching sides.

It could be someone from the original clinic.

It could be a person her mother or Richard had paid and then discarded.

It could be someone else entirely who had been moving money and information while the family tore itself apart.

Maya looked at the time.

She had less than two hours.

She could go back to Damian and show him the new file.

She could ignore the meeting and try to disappear for a few days.

She could go to the police with what she had.

Each option felt like stepping onto ground that might open under her.

In the end she opened the rideshare app and entered the park as the destination.

She did not message Damian.

She did not message anyone.

The empty space inside her had decided it needed one more answer, even if the answer came from a stranger in the dark.

The car arrived.

Maya climbed in and gave no further instructions.

As the city lights moved past the window she played the audio clip one last time, listening to the calm unknown voice talk about her body like it was a task to complete.

Someone had paid to make sure the pregnancy ended.

Someone had staged Damian’s betrayal to make sure she was alone when it happened.

Someone still wanted a meeting at midnight.

Maya did not know which of those someones would be standing under the trees when she arrived.

She only knew that every time she thought she had reached the bottom of the lies, the ground gave way again.

The car turned toward the old park.

Maya pressed one hand to her sore stomach and watched the darkness gather outside the window.
