After shooing Zola away, Vera Warner could finally lay down in peace.

“That’s only because, Mom, you never seem to grow up.

I have to grow up quickly so I can protect you.”

“…”

Vera didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that.

Just how did she end up raising her like this?

On Chloe Warner, besides that sweet obedient face and the right height,

Otherwise, she’d seriously worry her daughter’s body was inhabited by an adult.

“Don’t worry, Mom.

At least I’m smarter than you.

Just look at how shy you get—I’ll help you out in the future.

Then you can go in and out of Dad’s room as you please without being kicked out.”

Vera was about to lose her patience and pinched her ear in one swoop.

“When did you ever see me get shy?

Since when are you smarter than me?

And with which eye did you see me get kicked out?

You’re still so young—if you don’t know what to say, then zip it.”

“See?

You always get angry and embarrassed when you lose an argument.

If you’re so mad, just do it—go ahead and hit me!”

Now Chloe Warner put on a poor, pitiful look—in this, father and daughter were the same, both could wrap Vera right around their little finger.

To prove she wasn’t really mad, Vera had no choice but to let go, then hugged her daughter, trying to teach her some life lessons.

But Chloe Warner fell asleep before she got through even five sentences.

Vera shook her head helplessly, but at least she found a perfect way to get her to fall asleep fast.

The next morning, as Vera led Chloe Warner downstairs, Victor Morgan and Zola were already seated at the dining table, clearly waiting for them.

Zola’s face, usually full of misery, lit up the moment she saw Vera Warner.

She hopped straight down from her chair, ran over, and hugged her: “Mom, I missed you so much!”

Victor Morgan really couldn’t get it—why was Zola so close to this woman, but always seemed to be enemies with Luna Warner since she was little?

He just couldn’t figure it out.

Victor Morgan coughed twice, looking toward the diamond clock as he said, “You must be at the dining table by eight a.m.

sharp.

We’ve already been waiting for twenty minutes today.”

Vera Warner shot him a complaining look, then took the hands of the two little ones and led them over.

He never said anything about this in advance—who was there to blame?

Once the two little ones were settled, Vera had to serve this big shot again, looking like she’d been forced to clock in for work.

“I remember you’re supposed to go back to the hospital for a follow-up today.

How about I go with you?”

Victor Morgan paused for a moment, then shook his head.

“Special Assistant York will accompany me the whole time.

You should go to work.”

“I just care about you and want to go with you.

I also want to make sure I understand everything about your recovery going forward.”

If he let her know every detail, she’d just look for another excuse to move out—so Victor Morgan wasn’t about to give her that chance.

“I’m not used to outsiders accompanying me!” He could only use this cold line to turn down her good intentions.

Vera’s enthusiasm fizzled out immediately under his icy attitude.

She couldn’t be bothered to argue with him anymore.

Soon after sending the two kids on their way, Vera headed to the company for work.

What she didn’t know was that as soon as she left, this so-called gravely injured Victor Morgan actually freed up one hand to call Special Assistant York.

“Come pick me up in half an hour!”

Special Assistant York personally drove him to the hospital for the check-up.

Since Victor Morgan was trained in martial arts since childhood, he’d always had his share of injuries.

Even though his hands took a hit saving Vera Warner this time, it wasn’t serious enough to need months to recover.

Once the exam results came out, Special Assistant York beamed.

“Congratulations, President Morgan!

Your hands are recovering very well—you can already do most daily things.”

But Victor Morgan didn’t crack a smile at all, instead he said seriously, “You’re mistaken—my condition is actually much more serious.”

Special Assistant York was baffled and laid the report in front of him.

“That’s not right, President Morgan.

The doctor just said that with a bit more massage and exercise, you’ll be as good as new in a week.”

Victor Morgan shot him a look like he just couldn’t get through to him, then drawled, “Have you forgotten how to read the room?

Or do you want me to go back and kick those two out?”

Special Assistant York’s mouth made a perfect O.

Turns out, President Morgan was worried about those mother and daughter.

He didn’t know why President Morgan had suddenly become so devoted to this mother-daughter pair who appeared out of thin air,

But overall, it was a good thing.

At least it meant he didn’t only ever see that cold look from Victor Morgan anymore.

“I get it, President Morgan.

Your condition is indeed serious and you’ll need more careful attention from now on.

My deepest sympathies.”

“Now you’re talking!”

With that, Victor Morgan even wrapped another layer of bandage around his hand, making himself look even more injured.

Victor Morgan, who used to never care about anyone else, was now willing to sell his injuries for sympathy—Special Assistant York was truly shocked.

That evening, when Vera Warner came home, she saw Victor Morgan sitting on the sofa with a dark face, looking sulky and unhappy.

The two little ones were doing their homework and didn’t disturb him, so she walked straight over to Victor Morgan.

“What happened?

Did the check-up go badly?”

Victor Morgan sighed.

“The doctor said things got worse and I need to get checked again in a week.

Right now I can’t do anything.”

Knowing it was because of her, Vera Warner couldn’t help furrowing her brow.

She’d always been a responsible person—of course she felt guilty.

“Don’t worry.

I said I’d take care of you until you fully recover, and I meant it.”

“But what if I never recover?”

Vera Warner thought for a moment and said, “Well, then I’ll keep looking after you.

At least living here, sponging off your food and drink, and letting the kids freeload off school—doesn’t seem like such a bad deal.”

Victor Morgan was delighted but pretended to stay calm, nodding.

“It’s settled then.

I want coffee—grind some fresh for me.”

Even though she really didn’t want to, she thought of his foul mood and could only do as he asked.

She still had to feed him at dinner.

It was driving Vera Warner crazy, but she just kept suppressing her frustration.

Victor Morgan always liked obedient women, so in a way, this was all training.

When she finally got used to everything and couldn’t leave him anymore, he could order her around as he pleased.

The next day was the deadline for Vera Warner to hand over her designs.

She was happy when she saw the beautiful clothes and immediately sent them herself to Mrs.

Morgan’s lavish villa.

Vera Warner originally thought she could finally take a break after finishing her assignment, but suddenly she got some very bad news: Mrs.

Morgan was furious after receiving her designs.

Rumor even had it that she ripped up the clothes on the spot, all because the design she made for Mrs.

Morgan was suspected of plagiarism.
