Ethan returned to Blackwood Mountain at dusk.

Vivienne walked beside him, her silver hair catching the last light of the setting sun. She moved like a shadow—silent, graceful, utterly in control. The soldiers who had accompanied Victor Ashford lay dead behind them, their bodies already cooling in the valley.

The family gathered at the gates.Full novel: Parasite System In A Fantasy World — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Eleanor ran to Ethan first, her hands checking him for wounds.

"You’re alive."

"I’m alive."

"The scouts?"

Ethan’s expression darkened.

"Dead. Victor executed them before I could do anything."

A murmur of grief and anger rippled through the crowd.

Thomas stepped forward, his face pale.

"We should have known. We should have—"

"We couldn’t have known." Ethan’s voice was steady. "Victor was never going to honor the deal. He wanted me. He wanted my bloodline."

He paused.

"He didn’t get it."

That night, the family gathered in the main hall.

Ethan stood before them, Vivienne at his side. Arthur and Silas flanked him—the two brothers, united at last.

"There’s something you need to know," Ethan said. "About Vivienne."

He told them.

He told them about her true nature—not a fabrication, but an original ancestor. A woman erased from history who had survived in the shadows for three hundred years. A spy. A manipulator. A legend in her own right.

When he finished, the hall was silent.

Then Elder Marcus spoke.

"You mean... she’s real? She’s always been real?"

"Yes."

"And the others? The ancestors you created?"

"Some were real. Some were remembered. Some were... something else."

Vivienne smiled.

"You created nothing, Ethan. You simply opened your eyes."

After the gathering, Arthur and Silas approached Ethan.

"We need to end this," Arthur said. "Victor Ashford will not stop. He will regroup. He will return. And next time, he will bring more."

"I know."

"Then let us go. Silas and I. We will march on the Ashford estate. We will destroy him and everyone who stands with him."

Ethan looked at them.

"You want to go alone?"

"We are the Iron Ghosts. We are legends. We do not need an army."

"You need someone to watch your backs."

Silas smiled.

"We have each other."

Ethan was silent for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"Go. But be careful. Victor is desperate. Desperate men do desperate things."

Arthur placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We will return. That is a promise."

The next morning, Ethan stood at the gates.

Arthur and Silas were ready—armored, armed, their faces set with determination. The family had gathered to see them off.

Eleanor approached Ethan.

"How are you feeling?"

"Useless."

"You’re not useless."

"I have no cultivation. No power. I can’t fight. I can’t protect anyone."

Eleanor took his hand.

"You led them. You gave them hope. You brought back legends."

She paused.

"Power isn’t just about cultivation, Ethan. It’s about belief. And you have more of that than anyone I’ve ever known."

Lily approached him.

She carried a small leather-bound journal.

"What’s this?"

"A gift." She pressed it into his hands. "I thought... if you can’t fight, you can write. You can tell our story. The real story."

Ethan opened the journal. The pages were blank.

"I don’t know what to write."

"You’ll think of something."

She smiled.

"You always do."

Arthur and Silas departed at midday.

Ethan watched them descend the mountain path—two figures in ancient armor, their swords gleaming in the sunlight. They looked like heroes from an old tale.

They looked like legends.

Vivienne appeared beside him.

"You’re worried."

"I’m always worried."

"You shouldn’t be. They are stronger than you know."

"They’re going to fight an army."

"They are an army."

Ethan was silent.

Then he said, "Why did you save me? In the valley. You could have let Victor take me."

Vivienne smiled.

"Because you are the Vessel. The one who brings back the dead. Without you, the Blackwood Family will fall."

She paused.

"And because I made a promise. A long time ago. To someone I loved."

"Who?"

Vivienne’s smile faded.

"That is a story for another time."

That night, Ethan sat alone in his room.

He opened the journal Lily had given him. The pages were blank, waiting to be filled.

He picked up a pen and wrote the first words.

"My name is Ethan Blackwood. And this is the story of my family."

He paused.

Then he continued.

"We were forgotten. We were broken. We were dying. But we refused to surrender."

"We created ancestors from memory. We brought back legends from the past. We made the impossible real."

"And now, we are rising."

He looked at the words.

They felt true.

They felt like the beginning of something.

A knock on the door drew his attention.

"Come in."

Thomas entered, his face grim.

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

"The World Rebuttal. It’s accelerating. The system—your system—it’s destabilizing."

Ethan frowned. "What do you mean?"

"The ancestors. Arthur. Silas. Vivienne. They’re becoming... unstable. Their forms flicker sometimes. Their memories are fragmenting."

He paused.

"If the World Rebuttal reaches 100%, they’ll be erased. All of them."

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

"How long?"

"Days. Maybe less."

Ethan stood.

"I need to find a way to stop it."

"How?"

"I don’t know. But I’ll find one."

He looked at the journal on his desk.

"I have to."

The next morning, Ethan gathered the family.

"The World Rebuttal is accelerating," he said. "If it reaches 100%, our ancestors will be erased. Our history will be forgotten. We will cease to exist."

The family murmured in fear.

"But I will not let that happen."

He held up the journal.

"This is our story. Our truth. And as long as we remember it—as long as we believe—the World Rebuttal cannot win."

He looked at the crowd.

"We need to spread our story. Not just to the family. Not just to the villages. To the entire world."

Thomas stepped forward.

"How?"

"We send messengers. We tell our story to every city, every village, every clan. We make the Blackwood name known again."

He paused.

"And we make them believe."

That night, Ethan stood at the gates.

The mountain stretched below him, quiet and still. In the distance, he could see the lights of Greystone Village—the first place where outsiders had believed.

He thought of Arthur and Silas, marching toward the Ashford estate.

He thought of Lily, who believed in him when no one else did.

He thought of Eleanor, who had sacrificed everything for the family.

And he made a decision.

"I will not let them be forgotten."

He looked at the journal in his hands.

"I will tell their story. And the world will listen."
