Amenmose’s counterattack, when it finally arrived, came dressed in the last form Khaemwaset expected.
An invitation.
It arrived four days after the temple visit, delivered by a steward with the same formal courtesy every official correspondence received, requesting Khaemwaset’s presence at a private gathering hosted by Prince Amenmose that evening, ostensibly to celebrate the arrival of a delegation from the Nubian household bringing gifts and news from home.
New quest available. An Unlikely Invitation. Amenmose has invited you to a gathering he is hosting personally. This is almost certainly a trap disguised as courtesy. Attendance carries risk. Refusal carries its own risks.
He brought the invitation to Paser first, turning it over between them in the small courtyard garden that had become, over the last two weeks, something like their unofficial meeting place.
"You can’t refuse," Paser said immediately, reading it over Khaemwaset’s shoulder with a frown. "Not without it looking exactly like the fear he’s trying to provoke. But you also can’t walk in there without expecting whatever he’s planned."
"Any idea what that might be?"
Paser considered the question with the same careful, methodical patience he brought to everything, tapping one finger absently against his knee. "Amenmose doesn’t do anything without an audience worth impressing. If he’s hosting this personally, in his own quarters rather than a neutral space, he’s controlling the environment deliberately. Whatever he’s planning, he wants witnesses who’ll carry the story forward exactly the way he shapes it."
New quest available. Home Ground Disadvantage. Amenmose has chosen the setting deliberately. Expect the confrontation to favor him unless you can shift the terms.
"Shift the terms how?" Khaemwaset asked.
"That," Paser said, "depends entirely on what he’s planning, which neither of us knows yet. I’d suggest bringing an ally of your own. Two against whatever trap he’s built is considerably better odds than one."
Khaemwaset found Sethnakht later that same afternoon, and watched her expression sharpen with careful interest as he explained the invitation.
"I won’t be able to accompany you inside," she said, once he’d finished. "A private gathering among princes isn’t security’s jurisdiction, not without cause to suspect actual danger rather than simple political maneuvering. I’ll be nearby, but you’ll be navigating whatever he’s planned largely on your own."
"Comforting."
"You’ve navigated worse with less warning." Something almost fond flickered across her expression before she carefully smoothed it away. "Whatever this is, Prince Khaemwaset, I suspect you’re better equipped to handle it than you’re giving yourself credit for."
He held onto that small, unexpected vote of confidence through the rest of the afternoon, turning it over alongside every careful contingency he could think to prepare, and arrived at Amenmose’s private quarters that evening with Paser at his side and a status panel he’d checked more times than he wanted to admit.

Amenmose’s quarters proved larger and more lavishly appointed than Khaemwaset’s own, decorated with imported furniture and delicate glass vessels that spoke of a household considerably wealthier than the exile’s meager posting had ever afforded him. A dozen or so guests had already gathered by the time he arrived, several familiar faces from the eastern wing alongside a handful of visiting Nubian officials, all of them arranged with careful, deliberate precision around a low table set with wine and imported delicacies.
Amenmose rose to greet him with a smile that carried none of the dismissive contempt from their first meeting, replaced instead with something warmer and considerably more dangerous.
"Prince Khaemwaset. I’m so glad you could attend." His eyes flicked briefly, deliberately, toward Paser. "And you’ve brought company. How thoughtful."
New quest available. Reading the Trap. Amenmose’s warmth is performative. Something in this gathering has been specifically arranged for your presence. Stay alert.
The evening unfolded with the careful, unhurried rhythm of any court gathering, wine poured, small talk exchanged, the visiting Nubian officials sharing stories from home that Amenmose received with practiced, affectionate attention. Khaemwaset watched carefully throughout, cataloguing every detail, waiting for whatever trap Paser had warned him to expect.
It arrived nearly an hour into the gathering, delivered with the same casual, conversational ease Amenmose had used to needle him at dinner weeks earlier.
"Prince Khaemwaset, I understand you’ve become quite close with our Crown Prince recently," Amenmose said, addressing the whole gathered room as much as Khaemwaset himself, his tone light and social, deceptively harmless. "A private conversation in the eastern corridor, I’m told. Rather intimate for two princes who’d barely exchanged words before."
The room’s attention shifted toward him, subtle but unmistakable, and Khaemwaset felt the trap close around him with a cold, precise clarity.
New quest available. Exposed Information. Amenmose knows about your private conversation with Ramose. This information’s public release could damage both you and the Crown Prince significantly.
Someone had reported that corridor conversation. A servant, perhaps, or one of the other princes who’d witnessed it in passing, or possibly Amenmose’s own network operating with the same quiet efficiency Meret had built for him. It hardly mattered now which source had leaked it. What mattered was managing the fallout, immediately, in front of an audience specifically gathered to witness whatever damage this revelation might cause.
Passive skill triggered. Double Tongue and Read the Room, Advanced. Amenmose’s tone carries deliberate provocation disguised as innocent observation. Audience attention is fully engaged, awaiting your response.
"The Crown Prince was kind enough to welcome me personally to the capital," Khaemwaset said, keeping his voice carefully light, matching Amenmose’s own conversational register rather than betraying any hint of the alarm actually racing through him. "I imagine he’s extended similar courtesy to most of the gathered princes. Wouldn’t you agree, Prince Amenmose? Or did he simply favor me with particular attention?"
A ripple of quiet, uncertain amusement moved through the gathered guests, several of them glancing toward Amenmose with expressions that suggested they, too, wondered whether he’d received the same courtesy Ramose had apparently shown Khaemwaset.
Amenmose’s expression flickered, briefly, a small crack in his carefully maintained composure before it smoothed back over. "I couldn’t say. I haven’t had the privilege myself."
"How unfortunate," Khaemwaset said mildly, and let the small, deliberate implication hang in the air, that perhaps Amenmose’s resentment stemmed less from any genuine concern about political intrigue and more from simple, petty jealousy at having been overlooked himself.
New skill unlocked. Deflection Through Implication. Passive. Ability to redirect social attacks by subtly reframing the attacker’s own motivations, without directly accusing them of anything provable.
Amenmose’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, and Khaemwaset watched him recalculate, the same quick, visible process he’d noticed at dinner weeks earlier, an opponent realizing his prepared strike had somehow been turned aside more gracefully than expected.
He didn’t retreat, though. Not entirely. Instead, he shifted tactics with the same easy fluidity he’d shown throughout the evening.
"Perhaps I’m simply curious," Amenmose said, recovering, "what a garrison prince and the Crown Prince might have found so pressing to discuss privately, away from the rest of us. It does seem rather significant, doesn’t it, for the heir to the throne to seek out counsel from someone so recently, and so dramatically, returned from exile."
New quest available. The Real Target. Amenmose’s actual goal may not be embarrassing you directly, but rather planting suspicion about your influence over Ramose in front of witnesses who might report it to the Regent.
The realization landed with cold, immediate clarity. This wasn’t really about him at all, not fundamentally. Amenmose was using him as a convenient instrument to plant doubt about Ramose’s loyalties, doubt that would inevitably find its way back to Queen Tiye-Nakht through whatever careful channels connected this gathering to the regent’s own intelligence network.
If that doubt took root, it endangered not just Khaemwaset’s fragile, uncertain alliance with the Crown Prince, but potentially Ramose himself, in a court where a regent’s suspicion of her own son’s loyalty could prove considerably more dangerous than any rival prince’s scheming.
He needed to shut this down completely, and he needed to do it in a way that left Amenmose with nothing further to build on.
"I think you’re overestimating both my significance and my subtlety, Prince Amenmose," Khaemwaset said, letting a note of genuine, self deprecating humor color his voice. "The Crown Prince asked how I was adjusting to court life after eight years away. I told him it was considerably more exhausting than anticipated. That was the entirety of our profound, world altering conversation." He gestured, small and easy, around the gathered room. "I’m afraid if you were hoping for a conspiracy, I have nothing more scandalous to offer than an honest complaint about how tiring everyone’s careful court manners have proven."
The room’s tension broke into genuine, warmer laughter this time, several of the gathered guests visibly relaxing, the careful weight of potential scandal dissolving into simple, relatable court fatigue. Even the visiting Nubian officials chuckled, one of them offering a good natured comment about how exhausting palace etiquette had proven during their own stay.
Passive skill triggered. Deflection Through Implication and Steady Under Scrutiny. Public perception successfully redirected. Amenmose’s attempted trap has been neutralized.
Amenmose’s expression remained carefully composed, but Khaemwaset caught, underneath it, a flash of genuine frustration, the look of a man who’d prepared an elegant trap and watched it dissolve into harmless dinner conversation through nothing more than a well placed joke.
"Well said, Prince Khaemwaset," Amenmose managed finally, raising his cup in a gesture that looked, to the rest of the gathered room, like genuine good sportsmanship. "I withdraw the implication entirely."
New level reached. Khaemwaset is now Level 6.
New title unlocked. The Boy Who Turns Traps into Jokes. Effect, small permanent increase to Charisma and reduced deception detection risk when using humor as social defense.
The rest of the evening passed without further incident, Amenmose apparently satisfied to let the failed gambit rest rather than risk a second, more obvious attempt in front of an audience that had already watched his first attempt collapse so gracefully. Khaemwaset made his careful, polite farewells alongside Paser once a reasonable interval had passed, and found Sethnakht waiting exactly where she’d promised, leaning against a pillar in the corridor outside with the patient, watchful stillness that had become so familiar over the last month.
"Well?" she asked, falling into step beside him as they walked back toward the eastern wing.
"He tried to use my conversation with Ramose against both of us," Khaemwaset said. "I turned it into a joke about tiring court manners instead."
Something that might have been genuine admiration crossed Sethnakht’s face. "That’s considerably more sophisticated than swinging a rock, Prince Khaemwaset."
"I’m told I contain multitudes, General."
Her mouth curved, small and genuine, into something that wasn’t quite a laugh but came remarkably close. "So it would seem." A pause, more serious now. "Amenmose won’t stop with one failed attempt. You embarrassed him twice now, publicly, in front of witnesses whose opinions matter to him."
"I know," Khaemwaset said, the earlier satisfaction of the evening’s small victory settling into something heavier and more watchful. "But at least this time, I think I bought Ramose some genuine protection along with my own."
Sethnakht studied him for a long, quiet moment as they walked, something careful and considering in her expression that Khaemwaset couldn’t entirely read.
"You keep surprising me, Prince Khaemwaset," she said finally. "I’m not entirely certain yet whether that’s a good thing or a very dangerous one."
"Can’t it be both?" he asked, echoing, deliberately, the same words Paser had used weeks earlier about his own choice to remain allied.
Sethnakht’s laugh, when it finally came, soft and genuinely surprised, felt like its own small, unexpected victory, warmer and more valuable than anything he’d won in Amenmose’s carefully arranged trap that evening.
"Probably," she admitted. "Most things worth having usually are."
