They left the temple as the sun went down. Khaemwaset carried the scrolls wrapped tight against his chest, hidden under his robe. Every step felt heavier than the last.

Three streets from the temple, Hunted Instinct flared hard.

Ambush. Armed men are closing in from two directions. Someone already knows what you found.Full novel: Pharaoh's Ascension: Rise of the Desert Exile — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"Move," Khaemwaset said, and grabbed Sethnakht’s arm, pulling her into the mouth of a narrow alley just as two men dropped from a rooftop where the street had been empty a breath ago.

Sethnakht’s sword was already out. She met the first man head on, fast and brutal, no wasted motion. Khaemwaset turned to face the second, and felt the system light up around him, sharp and immediate.

STATUS PANEL

Khaemwaset, Level 8

Combat Skills Active: First Instinct, Desert-Born Reflexes, Hunted Instinct

The man came at him with a curved knife, fast, trained, nothing like the raiders on the desert road. Khaemwaset ducked under the first slash, felt First Instinct catch the timing of the second, and drove his elbow into the man’s ribs hard enough to hear something crack.

EXP gained: 60

Skill triggered: Desert-Born Reflexes. Dodge successful.

The man staggered, and Khaemwaset didn’t give him time to recover. He grabbed the knife hand, twisted, and slammed the attacker face first into the alley wall. The man went down and stayed down.

Beside him, Sethnakht finished her own fight just as fast, her opponent crumpling with a clean strike to the throat.

New quest complete: Ambush survived. No casualties.

She turned to him, breathing hard, eyes sharp with adrenaline and something darker underneath it. "They knew where we’d be. That means someone at the temple talked, or someone’s been watching us longer than we realized."

"Merneptah wouldn’t," Khaemwaset said, certain of it in a way that surprised him.

"Then someone else saw us go in." Sethnakht crouched by the unconscious man, checking his robes quickly, pulling out a small token stamped with a symbol Khaemwaset recognized instantly from weeks of careful study. The mark of the Amun temple guard.

Confirmed Enemy. Meryre already suspects you have evidence against him. The window to act safely is closing fast.

"They move quickly," Khaemwaset said, the weight of it settling cold in his chest.

"Then we move faster." Sethnakht pulled him back toward the palace, checking the street behind them the whole way. "You can’t sit on this evidence, Khaemwaset. Every hour you wait is another hour Meryre has to bury it, or bury you."

He knew she was right. He’d known it since the moment he’d pulled the scrolls from that falcon statue. The only question left was who to trust with them.

Who To Trust. You must decide how to use the evidence against Meryre. Acting alone is dangerous. Choosing the wrong ally is fatal.

He thought of Paser first, loyal and sharp, but without the political weight to move against a Second Prophet. He thought of Tiye-Nakht, powerful enough to act, but untrusted, and possibly already benefiting from exactly the kind of corruption he’d just uncovered.

Then he thought of Ramose. A private corridor. An honest confession. I don’t want a throne built on however many careful accidents it takes to clear a path to it.

"Ramose," Khaemwaset said.

Sethnakht stopped walking. "That’s either the smartest move available to you, or the most dangerous one."

"I know." He met her eyes. "I need you to trust me on this."

Something passed between them, quiet and certain. "I already do," she said. "That’s exactly what worries me."

The Crown Prince’s Choice. Bring the evidence to Ramose directly. His response will determine the fate of the succession crisis.

He found Ramose alone in the palace gardens two hours later, using a message passed quietly through Meret’s network to arrange a meeting away from watching eyes. The Crown Prince arrived nervous, glancing over his shoulder more than once before he finally spoke.

"Your message said this was urgent," Ramose said. "And private. That combination worries me, Prince Khaemwaset."

"It should." Khaemwaset pulled the scrolls from beneath his robe and held them out. "This is proof that Second Prophet Meryre has spent years stealing from the royal treasury, and that he murdered my mother to keep it hidden."

Ramose went very still. He didn’t reach for the scrolls right away.

The Moment of Truth. Ramose must choose whether to accept this evidence and act on it, or protect his mother’s regency by burying it.

"If this is real," Ramose said slowly, "it doesn’t just implicate Meryre. It implicates my mother’s regency. Everyone will ask what she knew, and when."

"I know." Khaemwaset kept his voice steady. "I’m giving you the choice anyway, because you told me once you didn’t want a throne built on this kind of rot. I’m asking if you meant it."

The silence stretched long enough that Khaemwaset felt his pulse pounding in his ears, certain he’d finally misjudged someone badly enough to cost everything.

Then Ramose reached out and took the scrolls.

New quest complete: The Crown Prince’s Choice. Ramose has accepted the evidence.

"I meant it," Ramose said quietly, unrolling the first scroll with hands that trembled slightly. His eyes scanned the careful, damning script, and his face went pale. "Gods. This is worse than I imagined."

"There’s more," Khaemwaset said. "Meryre’s household is tied to Amenmose’s family by marriage. This isn’t just corruption. It’s a plan to buy influence over the throne itself."

Ramose looked up, something hard and decided settling into his young face for the first time since Khaemwaset had met him. "Then it ends now. I’ll bring this to my mother myself. If she’s involved, I need to know. If she isn’t, she needs proof strong enough to move against Meryre before he moves against either of us first."

New skill unlocked: Kingmaker’s Gambit. Passive. Increased Ma’at and political standing from trusting a rival’s heir with decisive evidence during a succession crisis.

New level reached. Khaemwaset is now Level 9.

"Be careful," Khaemwaset said. "If Meryre learns you have this before you’re ready to move—"

"I know the risk." Ramose rolled the scrolls closed and tucked them carefully away. "But you took a bigger risk giving them to me at all. I won’t waste that."

He left quickly, disappearing into the palace’s darkening corridors, and Khaemwaset stood alone in the quiet garden for a long moment, feeling the enormous weight of the decision he’d just made settle over him.

Sethnakht found him there minutes later, having watched the whole exchange from a careful distance.

"You just handed the single most dangerous piece of evidence in this entire palace to the one person with every reason to want it buried," she said.

"I know."

"And you trust him."

"I do." Khaemwaset looked at her steadily. "Not because I’m certain he’s honest. Because I’m certain that doing nothing was guaranteed to get us killed anyway, and this at least gives us a chance."

Sethnakht studied him for a long moment, something complicated and proud crossing her face. "That’s either the bravest thing I’ve watched you do, or the most reckless."

"Can’t it be both?" Khaemwaset asked, echoing the same words he’d used with Paser weeks ago.

Her laugh came soft and real, cutting through the tension of the evening like something warm breaking through cold air. "Apparently that’s just how you operate."

Waiting for the Storm. Ramose now holds the evidence. His next move will decide whether the succession crisis breaks open into open conflict, or resolves quietly. Either way, there is no going back.

They stood together in the garden as full night settled over the palace, torches flickering along the distant walls, and Khaemwaset felt, for the first time since waking up poisoned and dying in a body that wasn’t his own, that he’d finally stopped simply surviving whatever this world threw at him.

He’d made a choice. A real one, with real weight, real risk, and real consequences for everyone around him.

New title unlocked: The Boy Who Chose to Fight. Effect: permanent increase to Charisma and Ma’at. The system recognizes a decisive shift from survival to active agency.

Whatever came next, war in the streets, a quiet purge behind palace walls, or something he couldn’t yet imagine, Khaemwaset understood that the line he’d just crossed couldn’t be uncrossed.

He was done hiding. He was done waiting for the world to decide what to do with him.

"Whatever happens now," he said quietly, "I started it."

Sethnakht’s hand found his in the darkness, steady and sure. "Then we’ll finish it together."
