Returning to a past point in the timeline through a "Time Rift" would, under observation, only branch off into a newly derived timeline — a newly occurring event. A Derivative Timeline would not extend into a parallel universe; it was merely an isolated fragment. Once the observer from the Main Timeline departed, the Derivative Timeline would be corrected and completely disappear, leaving no trace behind.
According to theoretical calculations, if the disturbance created by a Derivative Timeline was large enough, it might be temporarily retained, and could even create ripples in the Main Timeline, generating more Time Rifts.
Once enough retained Derivative Timelines fully covered the Main Timeline up to the most recent point, an attempt could be made to destroy the Main Timeline, allowing the Derivative Timelines to merge with one another, overwriting old history with new history — thereby completely reversing the past and saving humanity.
The prerequisite for the plan was finding a Time Rift.
