With a soft ding, the elevator doors slid open.
Amidst the sea of clouds, the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the entire Jingbei.
Assistant Liu knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
A cool voice responded.
The man sat in his office chair, his impeccably tailored high-end suit accentuating his aloof and restrained demeanor, yet a single casual glance from him radiated an intense, almost rakish charm.
He lazily lifted his gaze, and upon seeing the visitor, the indifference and weariness in his dark eyes melted away.
Lu Jingyan stood up and walked over to her.
“Didn’t you have class this afternoon? Why did you come to the company…”
He paused, his brow furrowing almost imperceptibly as he reached out to cup her face, his fingertips brushing against the faint redness lingering at the corner of her eye.
“What happened?”
His voice deepened. “Have you been crying?”
Shen Nanyin’s heart trembled slightly, and she quickly explained, “No, we watched a movie in class just now, and I was just moved…”
She had checked herself before coming in—how could his eyes be so sharp?
Lu Jingyan’s eyes darkened slightly, but he didn’t press further.
Trying to divert his attention, Shen Nanyin raised her hand and gently shook the lunchbox, her lips curving into a slight smile. “I came to have lunch with you.”
“Assistant Liu said he doesn’t have time today, so he asked me to supervise you.”
Assistant Liu? Supervise him?
His brow arched slightly as he quickly pieced together the reasoning behind it.
“Hmm, it’s usually him.” Lu Jingyan smoothly agreed, taking the two bags from Shen Nanyin’s hands.
His gaze fell on the girl’s fingertips. Her skin was delicate and tender, and faint red marks had already appeared from the pressure.
So easily marked.
He lowered his eyes, gently kneading her hand, his long lashes concealing the shadows in his gaze.
“Now that I’m married, and Assistant Liu is usually busy…”
Leading her to sit down, Lu Jingyan spoke slowly and persuasively.
“Shouldn’t this task be handed over to Mrs. Lu from now on?”
It seemed reasonable.
Shen Nanyin felt his words made perfect sense and immediately nodded in agreement.
So Lu Jingyan watched as she earnestly placed the meal prepared by the housekeeper in front of him.
“You eat this one.”
He stared at her for a moment before chuckling softly.
“Miss Shen, can’t we just eat together?”
Shen Nanyin blinked.
But she still diligently used clean chopsticks to serve him dishes from the housekeeper’s meal.
Food is the staff of life—the benefactor who held the key to her happy life couldn’t afford to be unhealthy.
Lu Jingyan stared intently at her, eating whatever she served him. Even the usually bland and tasteless food became palatable.
Feeling slightly uneasy, she pursed her lips. “Is there something on my face? Why are you staring at me?”
Lu Jingyan replied naturally, “You make the meal more appetizing.”
Shen Nanyin: “…”
The drowsy afternoon was perfect for a nap.
Shen Nanyin had eaten too much, and sleepiness began to wash over her.
Inside the office’s adjoining room, the furniture was complete, decorated in the same black and gray tones, with just the right amount of metal accents lending an understated luxury.
The bed was large, but there was only one.
As they stepped inside, the floor-to-ceiling windows automatically drew the curtains closed. Shen Nanyin suddenly noticed the faint shadows under his eyes.
His skin was fair, making the discoloration particularly noticeable.
He must not have slept well last night. Shen Nanyin unconsciously tightened her grip on her fingertips.
“…Lu Jingyan.” Shen Nanyin called out softly. “You sleep. I’m not tired.”
Lu Jingyan stopped, his gaze settling on the girl whose eyes were almost closed, like a sleepy cat struggling to stay awake.
“I still have documents to review later,” he ruffled her hair, “rest well, don’t doze off in class this afternoon.”
Shen Nanyin reached up and grabbed his sleeve, a hint of stubbornness in her eyes.
Her slender, pale fingertips left a slight crease on his suit jacket.
Lu Jingyan lowered his gaze, his well-defined fingers sliding between hers, clasping her hand and pulling it down.
“What’s this about,” he curved his lips, his tone somewhat teasing, “still needing someone to sleep with you at this age?”
Her ears flushed red at his words, but Shen Nanyin still held onto him stubbornly, suppressing her embarrassment as she tried to persuade him.
“You didn’t rest well last night, you should catch up on sleep now.”
“I’m not tired, really.”
Her eyes were barely open, yet she insisted she wasn’t tired.
Lu Jingyan gazed down at her for a long moment before letting out a soft, conceding laugh. “Alright, I’ll listen to my Mrs. Lu.”
