It’s been five days since Lucien first razed his first village to the ground.
And just five days since construction began.
Now, as the late afternoon sun kisses the rooftops of polished stone, the once tiny, dilapidated town gleams like a jewel in the ash-stained valley. The finishing touches are being laid. Magical lamps adjusted, tiles aligned to perfection, and crystal-glass signage fixed above freshly lacquered doors.
Magical lights twinkle in window frames, and streams of clean water run along sleek new canals. The scent of roasted meats, fresh lumber, and mild debauchery lingers in the air as Lucien’s first jewel of progress gleams.
And it’s almost complete.
The Demon Lord emerges from his command tent with a stretch and a yawn, his arm lazily draped over Ignara’s shoulder as she leans into him like a flame craving fuel, tail coiled possessively around his thigh. The two stroll through the heart of his nearly finished domain, deep in discussion.
"Are you sure you know what you’re doing?" she asks, voice low and sultry, lips barely hiding her amusement. "Worker rights? Weekly wages? That kind of thing’s never been done in the Ashlands... or anywhere on this continent."
Lucien grins. "That’s the point. No one expects it. It’ll blow their tiny demonic minds, and boost productivity by a hundredfold."
Ignara eyes him, unconvinced. "And the cost, my Lord?"
Lucien gives her a knowing grin, pausing to admire the freshly paved roads gleaming with magic-polished cobblestones. "It’ll work. Sure, it’ll cost us a chunk of capital upfront, but happy workers are productive workers. And productive workers? They make kings rich."
Ignara flushes, smiling despite herself. "Understood. But if it crashes and burns, I’m saying ’I told you so’ while flying off with whatever’s left."
"Trust me." Lucien croons as he pulls her closer and plants a soft kiss on her forehead. "I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize the kingdom... or the people I care about most."
Ignara’s face goes crimson before he promptly slaps her on the butt. "Now, go finalize those contracts, firecracker."
"As you command." She bows, then struts away proudly, flames erupting from her heels with each step.
Serenith folds her arms and mutters, "It’s terrifying how efficient you are at juggling kingdom-building and carnal indulgence."
"I’m just built different, angelcake." Lucien cackles, "If I’m not progressing, I’m pumping. I never stop. Ever."
She rolls her eyes so hard they nearly summon a celestial rift.
The two turn into the newly cobbled street where children play with enchanted skipping stones and a street bard performs on a three-stringed infernal banjo.
The town square is now a proud circle of purpose featuring a schoolhouse with golden bells, a public library that smells like clean parchment and quiet judgment, a bustling tavern with open balconies, and a gleaming brothel with velvet curtains that shimmer with sultry seduction magic.
Alexel comes sprinting toward them, papers fluttering in his hands, goggles perched in his messy hair.
"Lord Lucidius!"
"Give me the tour, buddy." Lucien smiles, gesturing around him in a wide sweep.
Alexel grins. "All roads connected, my lord. They stretch all the way to your fortress and the next town’s edge. The canal teams have already reached the outer wards. Every building here now has running water, heating, cooling, magical lighting, proper insulation, and—"
"...built to my specifications?" Lucien asks with a grin.
"Down to the angle of the bar chairs, my lord." Alexel says proudly.
Lucien tousles his hair. "You’ve outdone yourself, Lexy. Remind me to schedule a playdate for you with some succubi."
Alexel turns pink but salutes. "Y-yes, my Lord. Oh, and the special request is ready for inspection."
Lucien lights up and claps his hands together. "Lead the way!"
They stroll through the village with workers nodding in respect, townsfolk waving and shooting him the occasional flirtatious wink.
They step inside the newly-built tavern and Lucien’s eyes sparkle.
It’s a worker’s paradise.
Warm, glowing crystals in every lantern. Plush booths of dark velvet and charmed oak. A stone fireplace crackling with cinnamon-scented wood. Shelves behind the bar are stocked with glowing bottles, demon-brew kegs, and even a few labeled Celestial Sips, imported illegally, of course.
Lucien breathes deep. "Smells like profit and leisure."
He throws open his arms dramatically. "This, my friend, is where revolutions begin."
Alexel beams proudly as Lucien slaps his back. "You, my friend, deserve a reward. I’m getting you your own personal assistant slash concubine."
Alexel blinks like he might pass out from joy.
Then, Vex and Vile pounce.
"Lord Lucidiuuuuuus~" Vex sings, wrapping herself around his left arm.
"My dear dark dominator," Vile whispers, kissing his cheek and nipping at his ear.
"My lovely hellflowers," Lucien purrs, "how’s your tasks coming along?"
"Come see for yourself," Vex grins, her tail flicking like a metronome.
They strut across the square, draped around Lucien like living accessories while Alexel follows, trying not to float as they enter the brothel, which is less of a building and more of a sanctum of sin that smelt of sandalwood and seduction.
Fragrant with incense and moaning softly with enchantments, the interior pulses with warm pink and purple light while fire crystals cast flickering shadows across velvet lounges and stages. A slow, sensual tune plays from nowhere and everywhere at once.
Vex gives a sharp whistle, and from behind heavy curtains, a train of dancers slowly emerges.
Tall, short, muscular, curvy, winged, horned, and everything in between. They slink down the stage, bow before Lucien, then strike poses that would make a celibate monk explode in his pants.
Alexel’s mouth falls open while his soul visibly leaves his body for a brief moment.
Lucien leans in. "What do you think?"
"I-Is this... heaven?" Alexel stammers.
Lucien grins. "Close enough. And that’s the goal! Walk in feeling blessed. Walk out broke. It’s the perfect business model."
He turns to Ignara as she steps into the brothel, licking her lips and whistling low. "Contracts are ready," she says, tablet in hand. "...and this place is dangerous."
Lucien nods. "Good. Now watch and learn. It’s called capitalism."
"Capital... what?" Ignara asks.
Lucien launches into a quick explanation. "You pay your workers well, make them feel appreciated... then build places where they’ll happily spend it all. Recirculate wealth. Build loyalty. Profit skyrockets. Rinse. Repeat."
Ignara gasps. "That sounds... evil. I love it, sire!"
"I know, right!" Lucien says with a wink. "Isn’t it beautiful?"
"This will revolutionize the kingdom!" She gasps and fans herself with her tablet.
"Exactly!" Lucien says as he takes the contracts and hands them to Alexel. "Gather all the workers in the square. Ten minutes."
Alexel snaps to attention and darts out, whispering apologies to the still-posing dancers.
Lucien summons a platform of ash beneath his feet and rises high above the village square. Workers, planners, builders, and assistants gather below, drawn by a surge of magical drums and the promise of something absurdly important.
Lucien raises a hand. "My beautiful, brilliant empire-builders!"
Cheers echo.
"I couldn’t have done this without you. And unlike the old lords of these lands, I don’t want your sweat and blood for free."
Murmurs of confusion begin to seep from the gathered crowd.
"I want your loyalty, your talent and your lives... not in slavery, but in shared purpose. You’ll receive a weekly wage. Healthcare. Protection for your families. Pensions. Paid time off. All I ask in return... is everything."
He snaps his fingers and a crate beside him pops open, revealing dozens of pouches of gold and a towering stack of blood-bound contracts.
"Excuse me, m’lord..." One worker raises a hand. "But are you saying we get p-paid? Every week?!"
Lucien smirks and lifts a pouch filled with gleaming gold. "Every. Week."
Gasps.
Then the crowd loses its mind as workers surge forward.
"SHUT UP!" Ignara’s voice cuts through the chaos like a flaming whip, before it becomes a stampede. Instant silence falls across the square. "LINE UP NEATLY OR NOBODY GETS A THING!"
A line forms in record time.
"You’re about to witness history." Lucien says as he turns to Serenith.
Contracts are signed and blood runes seal the deals while Lucien raises a fresh bottle of wine.
"In celebration of your official employment in my new empire, please, enjoy tonight. Free drinks and lap dances at our new establishments. Invite your friends."
The cheer could shatter mountains.
Lucien steps off the platform as the workers flood into the tavern and brothel, shouting for their friends and toasting to the future.
Serenith floats up beside him, arms crossed. "You pretend to help people... but really, you’re just giving them excuses to indulge in more debauchery."
"Angelcake, I’m doing both." Lucien grins. "That brothel and tavern? They’re going to become the foundations of the Ash Land’s economy."
"You’re building an empire out of wine and lap dances." Serenith sighs.
Lucien’s grin widens.
"Exactly. And it’s going to be glorious."
