Volume 1 Chapter 4: Please Leave Gracefully
As soon as the words fell, Song Jingmian noticed the man’s figure stiffen.
Bo Jingci’s brows were tightly furrowed, lost in thought.
She was acting too strangely today. When she told him in the morning that she was going out, she was filled with coldness, and the mockery in her eyes was unmistakable.
Normally, she wouldn’t even let him get close, let alone make such a bold and explicit move—something he wouldn’t have dared to imagine.
His throat tightened slightly as he frowned and pondered. How could a fever change her personality so drastically?
Was there some ulterior motive behind her actions? Was she scheming again?
Forget it. She was so soft and fragrant. Everything else could wait.
While he was lost in thought, the girl in his arms straightened up and looked at him.
Her usually cold and aloof eyes now held a faint trace of a smile, and her brows curved as she beamed at him.
Damn.
He was truly defeated by her.
At this moment, only one thought filled his mind: even if her behavior was strange, even if she was planning to leave, he would definitely bring her back.
As long as she didn’t leave him, he would indulge her.
“Shall I carry you to put on your shoes?” the man’s voice, restrained yet tinged with a unique sensuality, sounded.
“Mm-hmm,” Song Jingmian nodded eagerly.
As he stood up, she suddenly looked at him with teary eyes. “Bo Jingci, I promise I’ll never run away again. Let’s live a good life together.”
Bo Jingci: “…”
“It’s true that I caught a cold and got a fever from being caught in the rain today, but my mind isn’t fried. Don’t think I’m doing this to distract you so I can escape… I really, truly want to live a good life with you.”
Afraid he wouldn’t believe her, she added earnestly, “Even if you think I have ulterior motives, I’m not afraid.”
“Time will prove everything.”
After listening, Bo Jingci’s expression remained unchanged. He simply replied with a faint “Mm.”
Song Jingmian: “…?!” That’s it?!
After pouring my heart out… telling the truth…
Fine. Song Jingmian pouted.
If she put herself in his shoes—her cold, expressionless wife who usually couldn’t even be bothered to glance at him, who spent every day trying to escape his clutches, suddenly acting affectionate and saying strange things—she probably wouldn’t believe it either.
Better to believe she’d lost her mind from the fever.
After returning to the bedroom and helping Song Jingmian put on her shoes, Bo Jingci glanced at her indifferently.
“Rest well. I still have work to finish.”
With that, he left without looking back.
Song Jingmian: “”
When she woke up, Song Jingmian noticed that the sky had already darkened.
Feeling a bit hungry, she decided to go downstairs to find something to eat.
She walked over to the mirror and tidied her hair, which had become messy from sleeping. After casually adjusting it a few times, she prepared to head downstairs.
The girl in the mirror had a small, delicate face, stunning even without makeup. Her fair skin and gentle brows and eyes were complemented by long, slightly upturned eyes that added a touch of allure.
She smiled at her reflection in the mirror and turned to walk downstairs.
“Jingci, I’m telling you, you’re really something. I already said her fever has gone down, and there’s nothing wrong with her mind. She’s perfectly fine. Just because she got caught in the rain doesn’t mean her brain is fried. Why are you so anxious? She’s doing just fine.”
“My time as Dr. Gu is extremely valuable. Calling me over for just a minor cold is such a waste of effort…”
“What’s so great about her anyway? She’s not particularly good-looking, her personality is… well, let’s just say it’s something else, and I really don’t know what you see in her. She’s like a puppet…”
Upon hearing this, Bo Jingci raised his eyes and shot him a cold, sharp glare.
The speaker who had just spoken shivered, silently cursing himself for running his mouth.
Bo Jingci doted on her like a treasure in the palm of his hand—she was not to be criticized.
At the dining table, two men of exceptional stature sat opposite each other.
The one with an almost unnaturally handsome face, a touch of arrogance and boastfulness, who kept chattering nonstop during the meal, was Bo Jingci’s good friend, Gu Tingyu.
Meanwhile, Song Jingmian, who had overheard everything from the staircase landing: “…”
She couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her mouth.
So Bo Jingci still suspected her brain had been fried by the fever!
What could she say? If she told him she had been reborn, he’d probably be even more convinced there was something wrong with her mind…
“Dr. Gu.”
The two men dining at the table looked up at her words.
Gu Tingyu saw the girl wearing a simple white dress, nothing special about the style, but for some reason, she seemed a bit different today.
Exactly what was different, he couldn’t quite put his finger on.
In his daze, Song Jingmian had already descended the stairs and arrived at the dining table.
Only then did he realize what was different about her today.
Her eyes.
Yes, it was her eyes. Usually, no matter the situation, she had a dead-fish stare, her eyes devoid of life, like a puppet with its strings cut, utterly passive.
But today was different. There was now vitality in her eyes, and with it, her entire being seemed to come alive.
Suddenly hearing Song Jingmian, who was usually so cold toward him, call his name, his hand holding the chopsticks faltered.
“Wh-what is it?”
She raised her eyes and casually took a seat beside Bo Jingci, her tone calm and unruffled. “Did you forget to brush your teeth this morning?”
Dr. Gu: “…Huh?”
She added coolly, “Your mouth smells so foul.”
Dr. Gu: “…”
Damn… damn it.
What’s wrong with this woman today? Did she take the wrong medicine?!
He stared with wide, bulging eyes, like a confused husky, his gaze darting back and forth between Song Jingmian and Bo Jingci.
After saying those words, Song Jingmian lowered her head and began to eat.
She was so hungry her stomach felt shriveled; she had no time to bother with this arrogant man.
Seeing that Song Jingmian had no intention of looking up to engage with him, Gu Tingyu frantically signaled Bo Jingci with his eyes.
What’s wrong with her?
Bo Jingci simply leaned back lazily, paying him no mind. He naturally rested his hands behind him, unconsciously placing them behind Song Jingmian’s back.
The man, usually stern-faced and rarely seen smiling even once in six months, now had a hint of amusement in the corners of his eyes. The corners of his mouth lifted unconsciously, his mood utterly relaxed.
Holy crap, crap, crap, crap!
What is going on?!
Dr. Gu was now seriously doubting his medical skills. Just moments ago, he had boldly declared that this woman was perfectly fine, that her brain wasn’t fried, but now he felt thoroughly slapped in the face.
Not only was her brain fried, she probably seemed like her soul had been swapped out.
Gu Tingyu couldn’t understand how this woman could change so much just from waking up from a high fever. It was truly baffling.
After a long while, Gu Tingyu gradually pulled his thoughts together, his mind racing as he pondered something, even forgetting to eat.
By the time he snapped back to reality, he realized the woman in front of him was staring at him intently, not blinking.
Why did he feel today that this woman seemed a bit more pleasing to the eye than usual?
“Dr. Gu,” Song Jingmian called out to him again, neither warm nor cold.
“Ahem… Mrs. Bo…” he awkwardly uttered the title, not even knowing why it slipped out so naturally.
Only after speaking did he notice the couple before him curling their lips in a gratified smile.
“What’s the matter?”
Song Jingmian asked, “Are you full?”
Gu Tingyu: “Full… I’m full.”
“Then we’ll politely ask you to—”
“Gracefully leave.”
