Song Jinyue shifted slightly to the side, dodging the punch the man swung at her. In one smooth motion, she grabbed his wrist and executed a powerful shoulder throw.
“Ah!”
The man slammed heavily onto the ground, his scream piercing the air.
Charles widened his eyes at the scene.
He looked at the man lying on the ground, then back at Song Jinyue. His gaze turned excited, even eager, as if he wanted to try it himself.
The surrounding crowd hadn’t even reacted yet when they saw the man who had been talking nonstop suddenly lying on the ground, howling in pain.
They opened their mouths to ask what had happened, but just then, the police arrived. Thinking that the foreigner was more important, they ignored the man on the ground and shouted to the approaching officers.
“Comrade officers! Over here! Over here!”
“There’s a foreigner here!”
Hearing that there was a foreigner, the officers’ expressions immediately changed.
“A foreign…?”
“A foreigner?”
They had just received a call from the city bureau saying that a foreign expert named Charles had gone missing, and they were to find him as quickly as possible.
This expert was extremely important.
Could it be him?
The officers exchanged glances, seeing the same thought in each other’s eyes.
Their attention shifted to their captain.
The police captain stepped forward, and the others immediately followed, shouting, “Make way! Make way! Everyone, step aside!”
The crowd parted.
The officers arrived.
The man on the ground quickly rolled his eyes and decided to strike first.
“Comrade officers! You came at the right time! Hurry and arrest that woman and that foreigner! They’re together!”
The officers looked at the man getting up from the ground, then followed the direction of his finger to Song Jinyue—and Charles, who was standing behind her.
The moment they saw Charles, their eyes lit up. They wanted to ask if he was Charles, but suddenly realized they didn’t speak any foreign language, and the man wouldn’t understand them.
While they were still thinking about what to do, the man shouted again, “That woman can speak the foreigner’s language too! She must be a spy!”
All eyes immediately turned to Song Jinyue.
The captain looked at her with suspicion. She appeared to be only about twenty-one or twenty-two. She looked refined, but not like someone who could speak a foreign language.
He asked cautiously, “Comrade, do you speak a foreign language? Can you communicate with this foreign comrade?”
Song Jinyue replied, “Yes, I can.”
The captain continued, “Then please ask him if he is Comrade Charles.”
Song Jinyue nodded. “He is Charles. We’ve already communicated.”
Upon hearing that he was indeed Charles, the captain visibly relaxed.
“Then please tell him that his people are waiting for him at the Public Security Bureau and ask him to come with us.”
“Alright.”
Song Jinyue turned to Charles and relayed the captain’s words in fluent English.
The officers watched her speak fluently, their eyes filled with surprise.
After finishing, she turned back. “He said it’s fine, but he wants me to go with him. He doesn’t understand Chinese, and without a translator, he’s afraid of misunderstandings.”
The man started shouting again, “Comrade officers! Look! It’s obvious now! They’re together—they’re spies!”
The captain turned his gaze to the man.
Under that stare, the man felt a chill run down his spine, but he forced himself to speak.
“Comrade officers! Why aren’t you arresting the spies yet?”
One officer replied, “He’s not a spy. He’s an expert invited by higher authorities!”
“Ex… expert?” The man was stunned. “An expert?!”
Someone nearby muttered, “Good thing no one actually hit him…”
The officers’ expressions changed instantly.
“Hit him?”
Don’t tell them someone had tried to attack the expert invited by higher authorities?
A middle-aged officer asked sternly, “Who attacked just now?”
The crowd immediately pointed at the man. “Him!”
All eyes locked onto him.
“You—” the officer’s face darkened. “Take him away!”
Two officers stepped forward and grabbed the man.
The man panicked. “No, no! Comrade officers! I thought he was a spy! I was trying to hit a spy!”
Charles, confused by the scene, asked Song Jinyue what was happening.
She calmly reassured him, telling him it was just a kind of performance.
Charles nodded, half-understanding.
Song Jinyue raised her hand. “Comrade officers, wait a moment.”
The officers paused. “?”
The man being held also froze.
She reminded them, “The foreign comrade is still here.”
The two officers holding the man looked at their captain.
Song Jinyue continued, “He only attempted to act but didn’t actually hit the foreign comrade. And I’ve already explained it to him.”
The officers exchanged puzzled looks.
Explained? How do you explain that?
The captain asked, “You explained it?”
She nodded.
“How?”
“Dragon Country Kung Fu.”
The captain: “???”
Song Jinyue stepped closer and lowered her voice. “I told Charles that we warmly welcome him, and what just happened was a demonstration of our Dragon Country Kung Fu.”
The captain fell silent for a moment… then gave her a thumbs-up.
She shot him a meaningful glance.
The captain immediately understood. He signaled to his subordinates, then said to the man:
“Considering your patriotic intentions and that no serious consequences occurred, we’ll let this go this time.”
The two officers immediately released the man.
“Yes, yes!” The man was overjoyed. “Thank you, Comrade officers! Thank you!”
The captain waved him off. “Go on, leave.”
The man nodded repeatedly and hurried away.
The captain gave his subordinates a subtle look.
They understood and quietly followed after the man.
Meanwhile, the captain and the remaining officers escorted Song Jinyue and Charles away to the city Public Security Bureau.
Upon arrival, the receptionist heard that the missing expert Charles had been found and immediately led them to a meeting room, asking them to wait while he informed the superiors.
Song Jinyue translated everything for Charles.
Charles nodded repeatedly. “OK, OK.”
The receptionist, noticing her fluency, couldn’t help but glance at her again before leaving to report the news.
About ten minutes later—
The meeting room door was suddenly pushed open, and several figures rushed in.
