“Varek can’t come with us?”
Karl had been sulking ever since he opened his eyes this morning.
His expression was dim, and even food didn’t make him cheer up much.
Though he still finished every meal on his plate.
Waking up this morning, he discovered that Varek was no longer at home and had gone to the academy to continue the annual competition.
As a result, his plan to make Varek visit his parents with him had gone down the drain.
No matter how hard he thought about it, he just couldn’t afford to be carefree.
“The reason I slept so deeply was that I thought he would go with me.”
‘That way, I could pretend that the personality change was due to his presence.
I bet Karl Dawnspire’s parents would notice anything then.’
‘But this is bad.
He’s not going with me, and now I have to face it all alone.’
“Wait, why does the annual competition take so long?
Why can’t they do it in a day or a few days and get over with it?”
“A whole two months for the competition.
Isn’t that too much and unnecessary?”
He hadn’t thought much about it until today.
Why should the annual competition take so long when it was just students fighting each other?
Couldn’t they manage their time and finish the whole thing in a day?
Rai, who was inside the storage room, packing some things to take along to Karl’s parents’ home, stopped and stepped out.
“It’s complicated, Lord.”
“Complicated?
Tell me about it.”
‘They are wasting others’ time, and they think it’s complicated?’
“The academy has more than a million students, and each of them is given the chance to prove themselves.
From ability tests to talent tests and combat tests.
Everything has to be done meticulously.”
“Imagine each student taking the stage to fight another.
It at least takes twenty minutes to round up each fight.
How many hours do we have in a day to finish over five hundred fights?”
“To maintain fairness and give the students enough time to develop during the competition, the Sovereign had always made it two months.
Within these two months, some students grow faster and surprise everyone.
Some top students develop even more to become more amazing towards the end.”
“I guess this is the Sovereign’s way of making the students stronger, other than the usual fierce competitions in the academy, and it has proven to be right considering how many powerful students have graduated from the academy in recent years.”
Karl listened, and his anger slowly dissipated.
“So, this was all made by Varek?”
“Yes, Lord.
His Grace made the order.
Everyone had been following it ever since.”
“Oh.” He turned around. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.
‘That’s good then.
I believe it’s the best thing to do.’ He said inwardly and closed his eyes.
Rai returned to the storage room and continued picking things according to the list in his hand.
After a few minutes, he left the storage room and returned to Karl.
“Let’s go, Lord.”
Karl nodded and stepped forward.
“Let’s walk there.
You said it’s not far, right?”
“Yes.
Twenty minutes on foot.”
“That’s good.
Let’s walk then.”
‘I need more time to think.’
Rai followed behind Karl as they left the estate under the watch of the guards and the servants.
Some guards approached, hoping to protect Karl, but Rai sent them all back and promised to do his job well.
Rai, being Karl’s personal servant, had the highest authority among the servants and guards in the estate.
Even though none of them knew his real level, they still respected him due to the fact that he had a connection with Karl.
The street wasn’t as crowded as the last time Karl came out with Lyold to the cosmetic shop.
Many shops were even closed, and the people walking on the street were mostly children and Gers.
It seemed the higher popularity had gone to the academy to watch the annual competition.
Karl shrugged.
He would have loved to watch, too.
But those people were truly too strong, and their fights were too brutal.
They filled his heart with envy and trepidation.
Moreover, he had only recently begun cultivating.
He couldn’t afford to be too hasty and ruin his foundation because of envy…
Karl’s thoughts ran wild.
He thought of everything else but the things he would face at Karl Dawnspire’s parents’ house.
He had never been so worried about meeting people in his life.
For someone like him who had never had parents or even known what it felt like to have one, dealing with parents was one of his biggest weaknesses.
Especially when he had to pretend to be their son when he wasn’t…
“Lord, we’re here.”
“Huh?” Karl snapped out of his daze and looked around.
Before him was a small building.
Compared to the servant’s quarters in Varek’s estate, this house looked too small and poor.
Despite being at the center of the city, it looked to be the smallest house in sight.
It was really inconspicuous.
The house he had spent his childhood in and the house that held the deepest and most beautiful memories of his life.
Karl bit his lower lip.
‘This is too fast.’
“You said twenty minutes.” He said to Rai.
Rai smiled awkwardly.
“We spent more than that on the way, Lord.”
Karl’s expression soured.
“Let’s go in.”
‘It’s not like I have a choice.
I have to do this regardless.”
Especially now that he had started planning to go to the lower world.
He had to see Karl Dawnspire’s parents and assure them that he would be alright.
They needed to be assured of their son’s state.
Karl believed that Karl Dawnspire was probably somewhere and might return in the future.
He needed to let his parents be at peace and wait for him…
They entered the compound, and sure enough, memories flooded Karl’s head.
However, they were ones he already had.
So, he wasn’t that surprised.
He continued walking forward.
With each step he took, different things appeared in his mind.
A young Karl Dawnspire running around the courtyard with toys in hand.
A young Karl Dawnspire rolling on the ground with young Lyold.
The mother’s jovial scolding.
The father’s teasing.
The laughter.
The memories were ones Karl had never had in his life, yet they felt so much like his own.
They felt like distant memories he had never before tried to remember.
However, they were all Karl Dawnspire’s.
Karl knew he had never had parents in his life.
He didn’t have this childhood.
He lived on Earth.
Despite convincing himself this way, Karl still couldn’t stop the smile that slowly crept to his face.
