…………
“Are you ready?”
System 18888 inquired with an air of formality.
The Emperor to be courted in this world was considered a wise ruler, with exceptional skills in firmly controlling the court.
Moreover, he had a long lifespan and a fondness for beauty, so he had many favored consorts throughout his life—whether they were noble ladies, modest beauties, or wildflowers by the roadside, he loved them all.
Thus, becoming the Emperor’s one and only was difficult, but achieving a favorability of fifty points or more was not too exaggerated.
“No problem,” Ling Xiao nodded.
Alright, then choose your character.
18888 opened the panel. To court someone, one naturally needed an identity.
Creating an identity out of thin air was not impossible, but the cost was too high. In short, Ling Xiao wasn’t worthy.
For a team that had just started out, frugality was everything.
Therefore, the available choices were all identities that originally existed in that world. Several free identities were quite unappealing.
A young palace maid who emptied night soil, a beautiful but faded courtesan from a brothel, a middle-aged female cook skilled in culinary arts…
Seeing Ling Xiao grow increasingly silent as she looked through the options, 18888 felt somewhat smug. These identities were terrible, but without contrast, how could the appeal of other identities stand out?
For example, noble young ladies, exotic princesses, childhood sweethearts—these identities with advantageous starting points were quite tempting, weren’t they?
Just obediently take out a loan and spend money.
18888 cleared its throat, preparing to promote the loan project with an eight percent commission. It was already being lenient, considering Ling Xiao’s potential.
“I choose this one, the illegitimate daughter of a fifth-rank official.”
Ling Xiao’s finger landed on one of the identities, and she calmly made her decision.
“Are you sure?”
18888 looked at her strangely. This identity was also free and seemed decent, but in reality, it was extremely poor.
Because she would appear at the age of eight!
Eight years old!
No matter how desperate the Emperor was, he wouldn’t go after an eight-year-old girl!
Not only that, but the legitimate mother of this illegitimate daughter was no simple figure. Her family was powerful, yet she had only one daughter.
This led to her husband’s harem flourishing with a hundred flowers, with nine illegitimate daughters alone. This illegitimate daughter ranked sixth, her birth mother had passed away early, and she was an unnoticed, unfavored nobody.
18888 tried to persuade her for a long time, but Ling Xiao refused to listen.
This made it give up, inwardly mocking:
“What a fool. Good advice can’t save those destined to die. You’re saving now, but when you can’t make it and need to buy items, the loan terms will change.”
Just as it was about to initiate the transmission, Ling Xiao casually asked, “Is there a time limit for this mission?”
“There’s no time limit for novice missions. Growing affection over time is also a method, isn’t it?”
That’s good.
18888 felt a sudden unease, a sense of foreboding, and asked, “What’s good?”
Ling Xiao, dressed in green robes and a green skirt, smiled cheerfully but said nothing.
The next second—
Damn you, Ling Xiao!
A scream echoed through the Space-Time Conduit. Passing Taskers cupped their ears, looking around in confusion.
18888 felt its skin crawl, struggling desperately. Not only was it afraid of the unknown future, but it was also terrified of the present moment.
A pair of hands that anyone would admire firmly restrained it. The delicate, flawless skin seemed to it like the scales of a venomous snake.
These hands had just stretched out like snakes and grabbed her!
In the seventh year of Jingtai of Great Jin, Emperor Li Yue ascended the throne in his youth, possessing great ambition. He endured hardships along the way, eliminating treacherous ministers and quelling local rebellions.
Today was an even more triumphant day for him. The once-arrogant barbarians from beyond the frontier had finally had their royal court breached by his forces, signaling their decline.
Such military achievements were enough to ensure Li Yue a place in history, far from relegating him to the ranks of incompetent, mediocre, or foolish rulers.
The Emperor was in the palace of Empress Wen Shi, where the two were intimate, occasionally whispering softly to each other.
“My dear, how do I look in this attire? Does it exude a heroic and majestic aura?”
In front of his beloved wife, the Emperor turned around with a smile, his brows and eyes relaxed.
Wen Shi covered her mouth with a light laugh, thoughtfully adjusting his sleeves. “Your Majesty needs no clothing to enhance your presence. You are already the most majestic person in the world.”
As she spoke, Li Yue suddenly leaned closer to his wife, resting gently on her shoulder. “I am truly overjoyed. The barbarians have long been a grave threat to our dynasty, and there is that old history from the founding era. Do you think our ancestors would rejoice knowing of my achievements?”
“Of course they would,” Wen Shi replied tenderly.
A moment later, someone outside the hall urged them. Wen Shi gently nudged the Emperor. “Your Majesty, it is time. You must go to Taihe Hall.”
The victory over the barbarians naturally called for reporting to the ancestors and rewarding the subjects. Taihe Hall was the palace’s place of worship, where the imperial relatives awaited the Emperor. Later, there would be a grand banquet attended by the imperial family and ministers.
The Emperor straightened his robes, brimming with enthusiasm. “My dear, wait for me to return after paying respects to the ancestors. Today’s banquet will also feature a dance performance by the khan.”
With that, he strode away.
Left behind, Wen Shi couldn’t help but smile. A senior palace maid teased, “Your Majesty and Her Majesty are so harmonious, it’s enviable.”
Another palace maid added, “Indeed. Other insignificant creatures may have gained the master’s fleeting favor, but they dare to overstep. Pah!”
These words carried an implied meaning, though they were not something the attendants of the virtuous and wise Empress should have uttered.
Before Wen Shi could express her anger, someone stepped in to smooth things over.
Even so, Wen Shi’s mood was no longer as light as before. Yes, the Emperor was harmonious with her, but he was not without other gentle and fragrant companions.
Currently, the palace housed four consorts, twelve concubines, and thirty-six imperial ladies. While not all positions were filled, the numbers were considerable.
The Emperor loved beauty and was broad-minded in his appreciation—able to admire all kinds of beauty.
Arriving in the world of Great Jin.
Ling Xiao held the struggling System, whispering with a smile:
“The competition among favored consorts is too intense. Of course, I must bring things into my own area of expertise.”
Under the sunlight, the pitch-black shadow suddenly trembled!
