20 – Saving the Village Demon
Before long, the meal was ready. The millet porridge was fragrant and sticky, and the toasted bread slices were golden brown. Haha, succeeding on her first attempt at cooking made Qin Yue feel like a genius.
She carried the food into the room, where Sang Mohan had already risen from the desk. He stood with his back to her, washing his hands by the washstand.
His posture was straight and slender, remaining meticulous even when bent over, his movements exceptionally gentle as if deep in thought.
Qin Yue set the food on the table and said to his back, “Mo Han, come eat.”
Hearing this address, the man felt his heartstrings plucked, suddenly speeding up half a beat. His name sounded so pleasant coming from the young woman’s lips—so pleasant he wanted to hear it again.
He thought he must have water in his brain. Wasn’t he supposed to dislike women? How could he find this woman’s voice appealing?
After drying his hands with a towel, he turned and met her gaze. The young woman was staring at him, her eyes full of anticipation.
Near the corner of her eye was a beauty mark that danced with her expressions as she spoke, like a tiny star.
This was the first time he had observed her so closely. His initial impression of her was one of purity.
But the moment he remembered she had married him for wealth, a wave of disgust rose within him, making him believe that beneath her innocent appearance lay a greedy heart, which he found utterly contemptible.
Sang Mohan strode over with his long legs, bypassing Qin Yue and heading straight for the door.
Qin Yue was baffled: “…” What did that mean? Was he treating her like air?
No, she couldn’t let him leave. If he walked out now, who knew when she’d see him again—maybe not for months.
She hopped in front of him like a rabbit, spreading her arms to block his path. “Where are you going?”
A chill shot from the man’s eyes. “None of your business?”
Qin Yue rolled her eyes inwardly. She felt Sang Mohan was deliberately acting aloof, and since it seemed like a personal quirk, she didn’t want to call him out. Instead, she smiled enchantingly. “I’m just concerned about you.”
“I don’t need your concern.” The man moved to push past her and leave.
Qin Yue grew anxious. “You can’t go!”
The chill in his eyes deepened, a sarcastic smirk curling his lips. “Then try and stop me.”
As soon as he spoke, his strong hand clasped the back of her head and gently nudged her aside.
In a panic, Qin Yue wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, her small, soft hands holding on tightly, refusing to let go no matter what.
The man’s body stiffened, pausing slightly where he stood.
She expected him to pry her off like an overbearing president and leave heartlessly, but instead, he asked, “How many cows do you want?”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“I’m asking how many cows it’ll take for you to let me go.” His voice grew even colder.
Hearing such words from an aloof man felt utterly awkward. A man like him should only talk about diamonds, luxury cars, and stocks—not cows.
Qin Yue stifled a laugh, mustered her emotions, and pressed her face against his back, weeping silently. “Do you really think I’m a woman who cares about cows? Did I marry you just for a few head of cattle?”
“Isn’t that the case? If not for ten cows and several carts of food, would you have willingly married a fool like me?”
“That’s not how it is. You’ve misunderstood.”Qin Yue cried even harder, rubbing her face back and forth against his white shirt. Anyone who didn’t know better would think she was utterly heartbroken, but in truth, she was simply intoxicated by his captivating scent…
