21 – Saving the Village Demon
“Many people in the village starved to death. Without these cattle and food, even more would have died. I did this to help the entire village survive.”
Qin Yue continued sobbing intermittently: “And before I married you, I had already decided that no matter what you looked like, whether you were foolish or not, I would treat you well for the rest of my life. That was the mindset I came with.
I never expected heaven to give me such a wonderful surprise. Not only are you neither foolish nor ugly, but you’re also so handsome—far more attractive than any man in our village. Compared to you, the men in our village are all crooked melons and split dates, utterly unworthy of even polishing your shoes. You’re the most handsome man I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The young woman’s voice was soft and tender, filled with both grievance and lingering affection, making it impossible not to feel pity for her.
Only she herself knew that to appease the man before her, she had no choice but to mercilessly disparage the men of Fusu Village.
Sang Mohan’s icy heart suddenly felt a flicker of warmth. This girl really knew how to talk, saying exactly what he wanted to hear. He knew he was handsome, but no one had ever praised him to his face before. Now, he was starting to feel a bit smug.
But! He wouldn’t let her succeed so easily. He said indifferently, “Is that so? But I heard you tried to run off with someone to avoid marrying me.”
“Cough, cough!” Qin Yue choked on her own saliva. As the saying goes, when hitting someone, don’t strike their face; when scolding someone, don’t expose their weaknesses. Why didn’t he understand such a simple principle? Besides, Fusu Village had kept this matter tightly under wraps—how did he find out? Life is like a play, all depending on acting skills. Since things had come to this, she had no choice but to keep up the act.
“Wah… I didn’t want to bring up this awful matter, but since you mentioned it, I won’t hide it from you. That elopement wasn’t my idea. That beast took a fancy to me, knocked me out, and carried me off to that nunnery.
If my father hadn’t arrived in time, that beast would have defiled me. I wanted to end my life, but the whole village said it was the beast who deserved to die, not me. To avoid breaking the villagers’ hearts, I had no choice but to grit my teeth and live on… My life is so bitter.”
The young woman’s low sobs turned into loud wails, making anyone who didn’t know the truth think she had suffered some great injustice.
In reality, Sang Mohan had long since investigated the matter and knew the elopement wasn’t her idea. Still, he wanted to hear her say it herself to feel at ease, and his furrowed brows relaxed slightly.
“I have no family or friends here—you’re the only person close to me. Please don’t ignore me, okay?”
The young woman’s face was pressed against Sang Mohan’s shirt, wrinkling it. Through the fabric, she could feel the man’s tense body relax a little.
Qingqing and Cuicui: “…” Sister-in-law, could you at least speak with a little conscience!
“Enough, let’s eat first,” the man finally said indifferently.
Qin Yue cheered inwardly. Goodness, was it ever easy to get this man to stay for a meal?
She released her fleshy paws from around his waist and very obsequiously pulled out a stool for him.
The man was tall and looked cramped sitting on the small stool. She noticed this and filed it away in her mind.
The man elegantly took a bite of the toasted flatbread. Qin Yue watched him intently as he swallowed, then asked, “Is it good?”
He glanced at her and gave a slight nod.
Qin Yue secretly rejoiced. As the saying goes, to capture a man’s heart, you must first capture his stomach—and she had done just that.Following the method for making meat sandwiches from her previous life, she placed the beast meat inside the roasted bun and handed it to the man: “Try it, this way it tastes better.”
